Carlson Moto Departs Snocross, Chases TORC Pro Light Short Course Off Road Title

Getting some air in his final race, Andrew Carlson is looking foward to racing trucks this summer

Andrew Carlson wrapped up his Snocross career at the final event of the season at Lake Geneva, IL

At the end of the 2016-2017 season, Carlson Moto announced that it would be leaving Snocross competition. For more than 20 years, the Carlson Moto family has spent their winters competing at Snocross tracks across North America. Now Chris Carlson, son and Pro-Open rider Andrew, and the Carlson Moto organization are focused on their future efforts in The Off-Road Championship (TORC) truck racing series.

If you’re not familiar with Snocross, it’s pretty much what it sounds like – Motocross on snowmobiles, in the snow, except the sleds weigh twice as much as Motocross bikes, just to add a little more of a challenge.

Family and racing have always been a close partnership for Chris and his wife, Deb. Both their daughter Taylor and son Andrew grew up racing with their father at regional Snocross tracks. The siblings started competing when Andrew and Taylor were four- and six-years-old, respectively. Both progressed in their skills and abilities to race at the national level.

“My dad has always been passionate about motorsports and presented the opportunity for us to compete as a family in a sport we all grew to love, said team Marketing Manager Taylor Carlson Schroer. “We began racing the National Snocross circuit 10 years ago where Andrew climbed up the ranks, eventually competing at the Winter X-Games and in the premier Pro Open class. Racing snowmobiles has allowed us to spend lots of time together as a family and I know we’re all really grateful for that,” Taylor continued.

Ryan Springer didn't start racing snowmobiles until after he graduated from high school

Promising young rider Ryan Springer will move to another Polaris Snocross team for next season

As a team, Carlson Moto has some pretty impressive accomplishments to look back on: Multiple ISOC National Junior, Sport, and Pro Lite wins; four Pro Lite wins and 13 podiums in 2014; runner-up in Pro Lite National Points Championship in 2013 and 2014; and an invitation to compete in the Winter X-Games.

Riding a Polaris IQR 600 sled in the national Pro Open Class in the eight-event 2016-2017 Amsoil Snocross Championship, Andrew scored multiple top 10 finishes in Pro Open, including two seventh place finishes. He ended the season 12th in points.

Teammate Ryan Springer finished one position ahead of Andrew for the season, in 11th place. Ryan capped off his season with a pair of top-five finishes at Lake Geneva, Illinois, positioning himself amongst the fastest in the sport. Ryan will look to continue his promising professional Snocross career with another Polaris team next winter.

The Snocross events were contested across the snow belt, from New York State to Colorado, and South Dakota to Michigan, as well as in the Carlson’s home state of Minnesota.

For his dedication and contribution to the sport Chris Carlson was honored by the International Series of Champions (ISOC) during their year end banquet. Chris was presented with the CJ Ramstad Ambassador award, named after the legendary snowmobiling writer and photographer who died in a traffic accident 10 years ago. The award recognizes Chris for his unrelenting passion and involvement in the sport and his efforts to support and grow the sport through his team and ERX Motor Park, co-owned by Chris.

Carlsom Moto will be focused full-time on the TORC series and their PRO Light truck

The Carlson Moto team is seeking more podiums this season after Andrew's breakthough win last year

The team is already preparing for their third season of racing in The Off-Road Championship (TORC) truck racing series, and of course, bringing K&N air and oil filters along with them. Last summer, Andrew earned his first PRO Light win while competing at the inaugural TORC event at ERX Motor Park in his hometown of Elk River, Minnesota. Now with a greater focus and commitment, Andrew and the Carlson Moto team are working to earn more TORC podiums this summer.

When Andrew was asked why he’s trading the pristine white of a Snocross track to the grass and mud of a TORC venue, he responded, “I have always been interested in off-road racing and have watched many motocross racers transition to truck racing. I got an opportunity to race a few years ago and have been hooked ever since."

While Carlson Moto is a team sponsored by K&N, they’ve also become evangelists for K&N products. "Carlson Moto is an organization made up of racers--both current and former,” said Taylor. “Andrew Carlson, all of our mechanics, and literally everyone on our team has raced, and we've all been using K&N for many years. We've all grown to trust the quality and reliability of the products, and as gear heads we just love the performance gains. We're honored to represent the company and look forward to putting K&N on top of the podium with us in 2017," she added.

The team utilizes the following K&N products on their vehicles:

61-4010 air cleaner

E-3732 air filter

HP-5001 oil filters

22-1440PK filter wraps

99-0704 sealing grease

99-0551 air filter oil

The RSD Super Hooligan National Championship Series Heats Up at Dixie Speedway in Georgia

Jordan Barber racing in the Super Hooligan in Woodstock, Georgia

Jordan Barber had a race to remember in Georgia in the Super Hooligan Series

The entertaining third round of the Roland Sands Design Super Hooligan National Championship was contested on a unique D-shaped track in the red Georgia clay of Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Georgia. The wide, 3/8th mile banked track was both intimidating and fast.

In the preliminary racing action before the main event, Jordan Barber was the fastest qualifier. He won his heat race and grabbed the Dunlop Dash for Cash. Clearly Barber set himself up as the hooligan to beat in round three of the K&N-sponsored series.

Jordan Graham racing in the Super Hooligan in Woodstock, Georgia

Jordan Graham garnered a second on his Indian in round 3 of the Super Hooligan Series

In the main event, Andy DiBrino got out of the gate quickly and won the K&N holeshot. However, it was Barber on his Harley® S&S Sportster who ultimately took the win in the big show. Jordan Graham piloted his Indian Scout Sixty to a strong second place finish, with Miles Thornton rounding out the podium. DiBrino finished fourth.

Jordan Barber was understandably stoked with his performance at Dixie Speedway.

“The track just kept getting better and better as the day went on and that made for some serious racing. I pulled off the hat trick and won a lot," Barber said.

However, while the wins were satisfying, Barber was quick to point out the special camaraderie that the Super Hooligan series fosters.

"It was the fellow hooligans that made it special,” said Barber. “Pretty sure Graham was equally stoked for me to win as I was. I almost forgot what having fun racing was like until tonight. That’s what racing is all about.”

Next up for the RSD Super Hooligan Series is the “Hippie Killer Hoedown” in Perris, California. If you have not experienced the all-out craziness of a Super Hooligan race, you owe it to yourself to get out to the track and prepare to be entertained!

The Strong Partnership Between K&N and Kuryakyn Highlighted at Arizona Bike Week

Kuryakyn's Crusher Revolt Air Cleaner with K&N filter

This cool scrambler-styled custom Harley® features the K&N-equipped Crusher Revolt Air Cleaner

Kuryakyn has been a major force in the design and manufacturing of aftermarket parts and accessories for the motorcycle industry for the past 27 years. It is no coincidence that Kuryakyn has trusted K&N as the filter of choice in their intakes from the beginning.

The teamwork between the two powerhouse performance companies was crystal clear to anyone visiting the impressive Kuryakyn display at the 21st Annual Arizona Bike Week in April. K&N filter technology was prominently featured on the beautiful custom motorcycles at the Kuryakan camp, as well as on the intake displays outside the company’s semi.

Kuryakyn Hypercharger ES and intake-specific high flow K&N filter

Kuryakyn’s new Hypercharger ES features an intake-specific high flow K&N filter

The knowledgeable representatives at the Kuryakyn booth were quick to point out how significant their company’s partnership is with K&N. The teamwork between Kuryakyn and K&N runs so deep that the companies work hand-in-hand in the design and manufacture of filter elements that are intake-specific in the Kuryakyn line.

A great example of the symbiotic relationship is evidenced in Kuryakyn’s new Hypercharger ES. This innovative intake features an integrated electronic servo motor that delivers precise RPM-based butterfly engagement.

The Hypercharger ES includes an all-new custom Kuryakyn-designed high-flow K&N filter. That K&N filter delivers approximately 10% more airflow than previous Hypercharger models for a significantly improved CFM rating.

Kuryakyn intake with sight glass

This Kuryakyn intake offers a unique view of the good stuff

Another very cool new intake on display at their Arizona Bike Week booth was Kuryakyn’s Crusher Revolt Air Cleaner. This intake has an aggressive velocity stack styling, which incorporates a stainless steel mesh insert in its high-quality A380 cast aluminum body. Of course, the Revolt also houses a high-flow K&N filter for added performance and engine protection.

One of the most intriguing Kuryakyn intakes features a very unique glass port window that offers up a great view of the mouth of the intake and the surrounding cotton gauze K&N filter element. You don’t get much cooler than that.

It is not a mystery why an innovative company like Kuryakyn places its full trust in K&N filter technology. The two venerable and progressive brands share a passion for quality, innovation, and performance.

K&N looks forward to many more decades of shared innovation with Kuryakyn.

K&N Air Intake System Adds More Horsepower to Polaris XP RZR Turbo EPS UTVs

The K&N Intake System replaces the restrictive factory air intake in 2016 Polaris RZR Turbo mode

The K&N air intake system replaces the stock filter and housing for improved performance

Introduced for the 2016 model year, the 144 horsepower Polaris ProStar Turbo engine was the most powerful side-by-side engine available from the factory on a stock vehicle at the time. The DOHC engine included a number of updates in order to handle the additional power that the turbocharger generated: upgrades to the four stroke motor included forged pistons, high strength connecting rods, sodium filled exhaust valves, and a revised oil distribution system, to name a few. Knock detection and boost control was incorporated into the electronic engine management system. A high flow return style fuel system assures that the engine delivers maximum power at all times, regardless of altitude or ambient temperature.

And performance it has in spades. The 925 cc turbo engine propelled the RZR XP Turbo EPS from 0-60 in just 5.89 seconds. That’s as fast as a 2016 BMW 330e.

While the RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS currently have a 13 horsepower advantage on their nearest competitor, you can pretty much expect a power battle to ensue. In fact, Polaris already increased the output of the 2017 ProStar Turbo to 168 horsepower. So why leave yourself at the mercy of a stock engine rating when a K&N performance cold air intake can add over four horsepower simply by installing a bolt on kit?

The K&N air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before cleaning, depending on conditions

The K&N air intake system is fitted with an oversized conical filter that can be washed and reused

The issue that’s a common feature among all RZR models through the years is the use of a disposable pleated paper air filter fitted to the OEM air filter box. While a disposable paper air filter is efficient at trapping dirt, they have limitations when it comes to performance and lifetime cost.

To remove this limitation, K&N developed a line of Aircharger performance air intake systems specifically for select RZR models to increase power and torque, and reduce maintenance costs. These air intake systems are an easy to install, bolt-on upgrade which replaces the restrictive original equipment air box and filter.

K&N's 63-1136 for the Polaris Ranger RZR XP Turbo EPS and RZR XP 4 Turbo EPS air intake system features a free-flowing aluminum air intake tube and oversized RU-5064 conical air filter. The intake system also features a custom air box designed to protect the air filter from the elements. This air intake is relatively easy to install usually in 90 minutes or less. The tools needed are a ratchet set, a few wrenches, and flat blade screwdriver.

DryCharger will also stop small dirt particles, yet adds little restriction to the incoming airflow

Made of a pre-treated material DryCharger helps keep splashes of water or mud out of your filter

And while initially a little more expensive than the OEM disposable paper filters, the RU-5064 conical K&N air filters are washable, reusable, and designed to dramatically reduce restriction while offering excellent protection from harmful dirt and contaminants and saving money in the long run. The K&N air filter can be used for up to 100,000 miles before servicing is needed depending on driving conditions.

When using in extra dusty or wet conditions, K&N recommends the installation of an RU-5064DK Drycharger air filter wrap. K&N DryChargers are silicone treated, polyester wraps that are made to cover K&N air filters for added peace of mind. The fabric contains uniform micron sized openings that allow high air flow. Yet, due to the DryCharger's silicone treated polyester properties, the amount of dust or water that reaches the air filter is limited.

To clean the filter, you can use a K&N Recharger Kit, like the 99-5000, which will restore air flow efficiency and will bring your K&N oiled cotton air filter back to a like new condition. The included spray bottle of K&N Power Kleen works to dissolve the dirt build up and old filter oil, then it can be washed away with water. After the air filter fully dries, re-oil your air filter with the K&N filter oil squeeze bottle and then reinstall the filter for full performance and protection.

The 63-1136 air intake fits the following Polaris models:

2016 POLARIS RZR XP TURBO 925 - All Models
2016 POLARIS RZR XP 4 TURBO EPS 925 - All Models

Jimmie Johnson racing during the O'Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway

Jimmie Johnson won the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday. Johnson, a seven time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion, won his first race of the season. This was the seventh time that Johnson has won at Texas Motor Speedway, and the 81st win of his career.

“Just a great race car, and it was nice to really execute all day long” Johnson said. “I think we've just been trying too hard. You know, we won the championship, obviously, last year, and feel like we have good cars and want to come out and be aggressive. To dial in right at 100 percent is just tough to do”.

Johnson led twice for 18 laps during the 334 lap race. Johnson received 49 points and 5 playoff points. Johnson is currently in 11th place in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Standings with 190 points.

Kyle Larson came in second place for the fourth time this season. Larson started in the 32nd position after his car didn't pass initial inspections. Larson was in front but was sent back on a caution on Lap 33, and could not pass Joey Logano until late in the race to snatch second place.

"I just got to focus a little bit harder and not make mistakes, and we can control some races, lead some laps” Larson said. “All in all, still a really good finish for us and we extend the point lead a little bit, so a solid day."

This was Larson’s career best finish at Texas Motor Speedway.

Joey Logano finished in third place and led three times for 38 laps. Logano was poised to finish in second place, but was passed during the last 30 laps.

Ryan Blaney swept both stages of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, and led a race high 4 times for 148 laps. Blaney finished in 12th place and received 45 points and two playoff points. Blaney was in the lead going into lap 300, but a pit stop error caused him to lose ground on the standings.
