The West Coast Thunder ride brings people together to display their patriotism on a special day

The 18th annual West Coast Thunder event was a major success. The event is an annual fundraiser benefitting the Riverside National Cemetery. Consisting of two distinct events, West Coast Thunder starts at Riverside Harley Davidson for opening ceremonies. After a presentation of the colors and a commencement ceremony, the thousands of riders begin a 10-mile parade to the Riverside National Cemetery. This year, over 7,000 riders made the trip, accompanied by police, fire, and Riverside government officials. From the cemetery, the riders continue to Soboba Casino, in San Jacinto, California. The ride takes the majority of the morning, leaving the rest of the afternoon at Soboba to enjoy the live bands, vendors, and comradery.

This year’s bands included a pair of country music groups; LANco and Eli Young Band. Both groups put on an excellent show for the participants. And if you didn’t want to take part in the ride, tickets were available just for the concerts and vendors.

K&N was among the various vendors on hand at the Soboba Event Arena. K&N has supported the event for a number of years. “K&N is honored to support such an impactful event that takes place right here in our community,” explained Ashley Lopez, Shows and Events Manager at K&N Engineering. “Memorial Day is about remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. West Coast Thunder helps K&N do so not only through the thunderous roar that can be heard all over Riverside on this day, but also by being the major contributor of funds to the Riverside National Cemetery Support Committee, who continues to honor these men and women every day of the year.”

And a thunderous roar it is, with that many bikes riding in the same location at the same time it can be heard for miles around. It is almost a salute to those killed fighting for America. It is events like these that bring our communities together and make us forget what side of the political spectrum we stand on or what religion we belong to and instead stand united.

Andrew Carlson Departs First TORC Pro Light Race Within Grasp of Points Lead

After years of SnowCross compeition Andrew is concentrating on TORC off-road racing

Andrew Carlson looking pleased with the performance of his Pro Light truck over the weekend

It seems that just weeks ago the Carlson Moto team was saying goodbye to the sport of Snocross. After 20 years of active participation. Now here we are, the snow is gone, the days are longer, the leaves have turned green, and the underwear worn now protects from fire and not frost.

Andrew Carlson finds himself strapped inside a 3000 lb. truck instead of atop a 400 lb. snowmobile. One might think these are completely different disciplines but Andrew left the first TORC Pro Light race of the year just four points out of first place.

In all fairness, this was not Andrew’s first truck race. While competing in Snocross in the winter, he competed in select Pro Light events since 2015 and before that side-by-side off-road racing starting in 2012.

There was clear promise in Andrew’s abilities as he worked his way up the field as his first season progressed, just missing a podium spot in the penultimate race, and then grabbed a third at the finale.

The team is looking forward to a home-field advantage at the next event

The Carlson Moto team adjusted well to the challenging conditions at Route 66 Raceway

At the first event of 2017 at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois, Andrew set the fastest time on Friday in his AMSOIL, Atturo Tires, K&N #151 Pro Light truck. Then during the double-header race weekend, Carlson set five of the six fastest lap times during the races.

Saturday’s race wasn’t necessarily the kind of race you write home about. It started well enough, with Andrew setting the second fastest time.

The inverted start meant he had to grid in the middle of the field. With a muddy track full of drivers who haven’t competed for months. Andrew had the advantage, as his skills were sharp from having raced Snocross all winter.

As he wound his way through the field, an unfortunate bump by a competitor sent Andrew on his roof, triggering a full-course yellow. Andrew then fought his way back up the field to finish fifth, salvaging critical championship points.

A little bit of hardware to present to his ever-supportive mom on Mother's day

Andrew leaves Route 66 Raceway with the point lead within grasp

Going into Sunday, Andrew had a high degree of confidence. His finish on Saturday put him on the front row for the second day. What transpired was a two man race – Andrew and last year’s championship runner-up Kyle Kleiman. Andrew and Kyle pulled away from the pack, with Andrew hot on Kyle’s tail.

Even though an opportunity or two presented itself for Andrew to squeeze past Kyle, Andrew was thinking more of the championship and coming out of the event rather than being a hero for the day (with plenty of risk involved).

Andrew took second and was very pleased to be just four points off first at this point in the season. "We couldn't do it without our partners that have supported us from day one," Andrew added.

After the race Andrew admitted that he "had a few opportunities to try to put a pass on Kyle, but I didn’t want to throw away a good finish and the championship points on a track where a wreck was a real possibility.”

Running well at the first race of the season has given the team confidence for the season

The view Andrew is hoping to show to competitors throughout the season

Andrew also heaped praise on his Crew Chief. “Jesse Heise had the truck absolutely dialed,” Carlson said after the race on Sunday. “It allowed me to go out and just run my race.”

To which Jesse replied, “our goal for Chicago was to get on the box, verify our set-up, and position the team for a strong showing in rounds three and four at our home track. I’d say it was mission accomplished.”

"It's really exciting to kick off the season on a high note," commented Andrew. "We're looking forward to getting the #151 K&N Pro Light on the podium again at our home track, ERX Motor Park, in a few weeks." The TORC Series races on a scenic 1.0 mile course at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota.

K&N-Sponsored Bradley Morris Teams Up with Autozone and Gets his First Pro2 Podium

Heading south of the border is just what BME Motorsports and Bradley Morris needed to change their luck. Rounds three and four of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series was held at Estero Beach, in Ensenada, Mexico. This was going to be the first time that Bradley had raced this event, which is completely different from the other races. The entire atmosphere is different down there, and the entire town is so into the race that they have some of the most enthusiastic fans you will ever see and meet. The track is also right on the beach which brings spectacular views for the fans, but also completely different track conditions with a very sandy base mixed with dirt. This combination causes some of the biggest roosts that makes it extremely hard for the drivers to see.

Bradley started out the weekend doing a promotional event with his newest sponsor, Autozone. Bradley was at one of the local Autozones with his K&N Filters Pro 2 on display and was signing autographs to promote the race along with Lucas Oil Products. This was a great way for Bradley to see the passion the fans have for racing and to get some additional motivation for getting ready for the race. Bradley had a good practice session in both the Pro 2 and Pro 4 trucks, but the team wanted to make changes to make them better tuned for the track. In qualifying, he ended up towards the back with the changes not doing what they were hoping it would.

Starting towards the rear in the Pro 4, Bradley knew he was going to deal with low visibility from all the sand being thrown at him from the other trucks. Bradley charged hard the entire race, driving fast and clean. Bradley was making fast laps and even with a deteriorating track, he was making faster laps each time. He was able to work his way up to fifth place by the end of the race on Saturday. On Sunday, Bradley was starting in the back and was looking forward to some great battles. Bradley was having a good race moving forward when he hit one of the inside track barrier tires after a difficult rhythm section and had to do a hard right hand turn. Bradley was able to continue the race and was able to get right back up to the other trucks to battle. With about three-fourths of the race done, Bradley was battling another truck when they got out of control and smashed into Bradley, breaking his front suspension ending the race for him.

In the Pro 2, Bradley was the fastest he has been yet. With this confidence he was looking at getting to the front and hoping to get on the podium. Right away Bradley was having a great battle and while throwing the truck into the turn extremely hard, he popped the inside bead of the tire. By the time he was able to get in and change tires he was down a lap. The rest of the race went well but he never could get that lap back. For Sunday’s race he knew he had great speed after Saturday’s race and was looking toward the front. In the beginning of the race Bradley was fast and was battling with several of the drivers, but mid race his Maxxis Tires started to get even more traction to give Bradley that little bit more speed he needed. Bradley started to charge towards the front, catching up to drivers and was able to pass them. Bradley was on the rear bumper of third and fourth place, watching the two battle and bang into each other. Bradley waited for their mistake and take each other out and was able to finish in third place.

This is Bradley’s first podium finish in his newly debuted Pro 2. He is brand new to this class and with a brand new truck and only after three races he is able to be on the podium in his fourth race. This is such an achievement. He is very excited about this accomplishment and is looking to improve on that and is hoping to be on the top of the podium real soon. So watch for the K&N Filters, Kicker Audio, Fallen Patriots, Autozone Pro 2 and Pro 4 to be on the podium and in the front of the field battling for the win in the upcoming races.

Greg Adler and his 4 Wheel Parts team had a great weekend at Estero Beach in Ensenada, Mexico, for rounds three and four of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series. The track is on the beach, which makes for a real sandy mixture causing a very harsh condition for the trucks and their motors. This is where the K&N air filters are needed the most, especially from the roosts from other trucks that can make it hard to see where they are going. Greg was able to work his way through all the roosts to have a strong weekend.

Greg started the weekend off with a strong qualifying session in his 4 Wheel Parts, K&N Filters Pro 4, putting him on the front row after the inversion. With the green flag waving, Greg and Doug Mittag would start the race full throttle. The two would start to pull away from rest of the trucks except Kyle LeDuc. These three would battle the entire race, swapping for the lead multiple times. By using clean and fast lines throughout the race, Greg ended up being in second place, with him and the leader completely separated from rest of the trucks. At the end of the race Greg would get his best finish of the year in second place for Saturday’s race. “It feels great to get back to the podium and to do it here in Baja,” said Adler. “We had good speed in Arizona for the first two rounds but some mistakes and mechanical issues cost us. With this big, fast course, the right suspension setup, tire combination, and motor got us up towards the front and we brought it home to a strong finish”.

Sunday’s race would prove to be more challenging for Greg and the team as they were looking at getting a second podium and possibly a win. Greg would start on the front row for Sunday’s race, and he would take the early lead. The race looked almost exactly like the previous race, with the same three drivers battling for the lead and pulling away from rest of the trucks. This track was very hard on the equipment and tires, and with only a few laps remaining while battling in the third spot, Greg would be one of many that would end up with a flat tire on the weekend. Greg was able to pull into the hot pits and his crew was able to put a new tire on allowing Greg to finish the race. “We were able to get back on course and finish the race, but after running strong all day, it wasn’t the finish to the weekend we were looking for,” said Adler. “But now we’re going into the next round with the momentum and confidence of knowing that we’re where we need to be and are only going to continue to improve.”

With Greg and the team getting their truck dialed in after the first season with the new truck, Greg is going to be someone to watch while he climbs the leader board. Greg has had good success at the tracks that are in the near future, so watch for him to be battling in the front and finishing on the podium rest of the season.

Aston Martin Takes Near Stock GT8 With K&N Filter To Class Win at Nürburgring 24

Its finishing position placed the GT8 in the top 10 percent of all entrants

The Aston Martin GT8 was quick enough to compete with some of the faster GT3 cars

This past weekend marked the 12th year the British Aston Martin Racing Team contested the ADAC Zurich Nürburgring 24-hours race (which for obvious reasons from here forward will refer to as N24), and they returned with a score to settle.

In 2016, the Aston Martin Vantage GT8 led the SP8 class for much the event before an unfortunate incident ended their hopes of victory. “The GT8 performed very well at last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours,” according to David King, President of Aston Martin Racing. “Ultimately the car crashed out in challenging conditions but it was leading its class and running like clockwork at the time so I have high expectations of a top result this time out.”

First run in 1970 as a Touring Car event, the race utilizes the entire Nürburgring circuit, not just the Nordshielfe, but the Grand Prix circuit as well, making for a monstrous 15.53 mile circuit – enough to start over two hundred cars.

The model chosen by Aston Martin for the 2017 N24 is the 150-unit limited edition Aston Martin Vantage GT8, which originated as a car equally at home on the road as on the track. As it carries the production 4.7L V8 engine, gearbox, and electronics, the GT8 doesn’t compete with the full-race GT3 Audis and BMWs that race in the WEC (SP9), but rather in the SP8 class for less-modified cars.

Awaiting the start - 100s of hours of work just to get to this point - then the green flag drops

In fact, allowable changes are pretty much limited to safety (seat, roll cage, fire system, fuel cell), some limited aerodynamic aids and very little work on the engine. For example, from the throttle body back the intake needs to remain stock.

One component the production-based Aston Martin GT8 shares with the full-race WEC GTE are that both rely upon K&N air filters for their intake systems to draw in as much air as possible.

Piloting the GT8 for the 2017 N24 were Aston Martin FIA World Endurance Championship drivers Darren Turner and Nicki Thiim, along with Aston Martin N24 regular Peter Cate and Markus Lungstrass, who drove alongside Darren Turner earlier this year at the Bathurst 12 Hours in the very same car.

The Aston Martin team qualified second in class, after running quickly in the qualifying race. No matter to driver Darren Turner who said, “I’m happy with that. We were actually a bit quicker during the qualifying race weekend, but the ambient temperature was a lot lower then, so an 8 minute 59 second is an okay lap and we are P2 on the grid – which is where we wanted to be.”

Over 200 cars started the 24 Hour race, with over 700 drivers registered to compete

The team finished 21st overall, first in class - quite an accomplishment for a near-stock car

As the race unfolded the Aston Martin GT8, despite being a less-sophisticated race car than the front-running GT3 cars, was battling among them from nighttime onwards.

Lead driver Darren Turner tasked with bringing home the close-to-production Vantage GT8, needed all his experience and skill in the final stint to navigate a dramatic late storm that drowned a third of the 15.53 mile N24 circuit in water, which was a real threat to erase the team’s efforts throughout the race.

In the end, David King and Turner together decided that Darren should stay out and bring the car home safely first in class and 21st overall, rather than pit and risk track position. Turner said afterwards, “when you have heavy rain here, it might only fall on a third of the track. So you really want to wait until it looks like everything is going to get wet before changing tires”.

Lead driver Darren Turner summed it up nicely, “It’s great to have won here at the Nordschleife. You are constantly fighting the circuit and the elements here rather than the competition. This is a hard track, in what is effectively a production car, and to survive that is testament to the build and quality of the Vantage GT8.”
