The impressive folks at Motorcycle Missions Veterans won the big prize in the 2018 IMS

K&N is a major sponsor of several of the biggest classes in the world’s largest and most prestigious custom motorcycle competition at each stop of the IMS. All of the finalists in the national championship round participated and won 1st or 2nd place at a stop on the IMS tour including Long Beach, New York, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Dallas, and Chicago. The overall winners were judged on creativity, craftsmanship, and building ability by a panel of journalists and builders.

2018 has proven to be one of the most hotly-contested and exciting Ultimate Builder competitions in the show’s history. Each stop brought out more innovative custom builds. That fact was not lost on the event organizers, competitors, and spectators alike.

“The J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show is one of the most competitive events in the custom motorcycle building industry,” said Jeff Najar, manager of the J&P show. “Every year we are amazed at the craftsmanship, time and hard work that goes into the entries in each city.”

This Harley-Davidson® 1974 Shovelhead won the J&P King of the Builders

It is a true pleasure to announce that the big prize in the the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show was awarded to an awesome bike with an equally awesome back story. The Motorcycle Missions Veterans build is truly a Harley with a purpose.

In short, Motorcycle Missions Veterans is a non-profit corporation helping veterans and first responders who deal with PTSD and those at risk for suicide. The organization, which was founded by a pediatric and surgical nurse named Krystal Hess, espouses the noble goal of offering hope and healing through motorcycles.

The custom is built around a Harley-Davidson® 1974 Shovelhead V-twin. The build features cool shortie down-turned exhaust pipes that exit just ahead of the pegs and foot controls (watch the rubber sole on your boots).

The frame and bodywork are board-track racing inspired. The bike was created by eight veterans of Motorcycle Missions who did a fantastic job of fabricating a frame that subtly cradles the big V-twin engine. From the girder forks to the under-the-backbone fuel tank to the hard-tail rear end, the bike is as retro-cool as can be.

A 1990 FXRS custom won the Modified Harley Class championship

The K&N-sponsored Mod Harley Class has been a highlight of the J&P competition in all of the stops of the show. The overall victor in the highly-competitive class was won by a 1990 FXRS Harley-Davidson® named "Bad Mutha."

Jesse Srpan of Raw Iron Choppers was the creative force behind the build that features a unique long frame paired with a custom short swingarm section. The combination makes for a unique stance for Bad Mutha. The hand controls and wheels were built by Performance Machine.

While Mickey Mouse makes an appearance on the custom painted tank, the bike’s performance is anything but mousy. The performance-modified V-twin runs through a Baker transmission. The short, straight-pipe exhaust is certain to announce the bike's presence.

Darrel Johnson’s 1965 Custom BSA won the big prize in the Mod Retro Class

There has been an excited diversity in the bikes competing in the J&P show. The K&N-sponsored Mod Retro overall prize was claimed in Chicago by a very special BSA-powered custom bobber.

Darrel Johnson’s 1965 Custom BSA was built by Gasbox and features the classic British parallel twin power-plant beautifully. The 650cc engine is polished to perfection and breathes through dual carbs and rumbles through slash-cut dual exhausts.

The frame is a stretched custom hard-tail that gives the old country bobber a long, low stance. The bike is finished off with a perfectly applied two tone blue paint job. That coating is, at the same time, subtle and eye-catching.

If there were a Mt. Rushmore of faces carved into the King of the Hammers boulders, Mitch Guthrie Sr. would certainly be there. The elder Guthrie is a legend in the sport with six Hammers victories, several of which included his son as a co-driver. Based on what we witnessed in this year’s race, Mitch Jr. is also on his way to legend status.

The younger Guthrie namesake is now carrying on the legacy of topping the race podium. The 2018 running of the King of the Hammers marked the first time Junior raced the course without his father in the adjacent seat. Clearly, Mitch Jr. has been paying careful attention to the lesions learned sitting side-by-side with his mentor.

“I don’t know what to say. It’s been a long road getting here riding with my dad a lot and we had a few wins, but I really wanted to do it by myself,” Mitch Jr. said. “I was nervous going in. It’s my first time really getting in the rocks. We made it through, and it was a clean race.”

Guthrie Sr. showed that he still has what it takes in the brutal King of the Hammers by pounding to an impressive 3rd place in the race. The stranglehold that the Guthrie clan has on the Hammers podium is only rivaled by Polaris. The RZR side-by-side has dominated the competition for a full decade with 10 straight wins.

A massive 7.5-inch tapered K&N filter tops the Air Intake Kit for select 2017 6.2 L Duramax

But despite this increase in power, there’s still room for improvement. Take the K&N 77-3101KP high-flow performance air intake system. It’s been designed to improve airflow into the engine, which will add an additional estimated 15.22 horsepower and 32.99 lb-ft of torque at the drive wheels.

The LP5 Duramax is a significant upgrade from the previous version. Still a 90-degree V8, the cast-iron engine block features induction-hardened cylinder walls for durability. A forged steel crankshaft rides in five cross-bolted main bearing caps, with powdered metal alloy connecting rods with larger journals. The high-pressure, common-rail direct-injection system has an increased capacity, while the electronically-controlled, variable-geometry turbocharger operates at a higher boost pressure.

One drawback of turbocharged engines is that the process of compressing the intake air heats it up considerably, as a function of how much the turbocharger pressurizes the incoming air. Internal combustion engines work best with cool intake air, so an intercooler is typically installed between the turbocharger and the intake ports. A K&N Performance Intake System features a heat shield that helps protect the cool incoming air from being affected by high underhood temperatures. This assists your engine’s intercooler, as it delivers cooler air to the turbocharger, the output of which is lower in temperature, supplementing the drop in intake temperature the intercooler is designed to deliver.

The free-flowing K&N air intake tube significantly reduces restriction to incoming airflow over the stock tract, as well as calms power-robbing turbulence. Air passes through an aerodynamically-verified polished aluminum intake tube directly into the engine’s throttle body. The intake tube accommodates the factory mass air sensor, fuel pressure hose, and crankcase vent hose.

K&N sponsors three of the classes of the prestigious J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show

At each stop of the IMS, K&N sponsors two of the most prestigious classes and a special category in the massive J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show. Those prizes are awarded in the Modified Harley Class, the Modified Retro Class, and the aptly named K&N Performer Award. More then 60 customs were rolled onto the J&P red carpet in Dallas.

The bikes that won the K&N prizes in the "Big D" are great representations of the magic that talented builders can create. Here is a closer look.

Modified Harley Class

Harley-Davidson® baggers made up a larger percentage of the entrants in Dallas than they have at any of the previous stops of the IMS. With that strong showing of the breed, it is little wonder that a bagger won the hotly contested Mod Harley class.

A great battleship-themed bagger won the Modified Harley class of the Dallas IMS

The USS79 cruises behind a tall 26-inch custom wheel that carries a theme-appropriate propeller look. A low fairing sits above that big hoop with clean, ship-like curves. The bike’s lines flow down a beautiful, sweeping tank through a color-matched seat to bags that create a fantastic wake behind the custom Glide.

We are happy to say that the USS79 bagger breathes through a K&N filter. The custom exhaust ends in a wide-mouthed bend that conjures visions of a battle ship’s smoke stacks.

Modified Retro Class

A classic 1967 Shovelhead chopper rode away with the Mod Retro Class of the J&P competition

Miller’s custom is a classic chopper that is a fitting winner for a retro award. The stretched and raked telescopic forks rise up from a gleaming, chromed front wheel. The front end is capped with more chrome in the headlight, controls, and even the grips.

The bike falls precipitously from the triple tree through the stretched, color matched frame. The hardtail rear end cradles a chromed rim and classic rubber capped with a shorty rear fender.

The K&N Performer Award went to an innovative 1980 Honda Goldwing

K&N Performer Award

Richard Becker of the Texas-based House of Tandems is one of those builders who has found a motorcycle marquee that he likes, and sticks with it. Becker’s donor bike of choice is, however, a bit of a departure from the norm. The guy sees the beauty in the venerable Honda Goldwing.

Becker has used both 1976 and 1983 incarnations of the Japanese tourer in two fantastic prior builds. The Wing that Becker brought to the Dallad IMS splits the difference. His 1980 Honda custom won the K&N Performer Award.

The striking green Goldwing features very cool retro springer forks embracing a spoked front rim. Spooned on that chrome wheel is fat, classic rubber. Minimalist controls and instrumentation keep the front end clean.
