Here's Your Chance To Purchase One Of The Most Succesful Race Semis In The USA

Mike's truck is completely rebuilt and ready for the next owner.

Can't you see yourself behind the wheel of this beast and terrorizing the next track day?

The other day we received a message from our old friend Mike Ryan: “The time has come to move on from truck racing and see what else life has to offer and from here, it is looking interesting, so I am anxious to jump in and as much as it hurts to part with it, I need to sell the Freightliner Pikes Peak Special to help fund my new driver training program.”

Whoa, what? Freightliner Pikes Peak Special.

Yup, it’s that Mike Ryan, owner/driver of the first Class 8 truck to compete in the famed Mt. Washington Hillclimb in New Hampshire and went on to established the truck record on that New England peak. The truck also holds the current class record on Pikes Peak.

Mike Ryan set the record and won his class at the 2011 Mt. Washington Hill Climb

Pikes Peak, to the few of you not familiar with the epic event is also known as “The Race to the Clouds,” held just outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and is the second oldest motorsports event in the U.S. after the Indianapolis 500. The course runs 12.46 miles through 156 turns, climbing nearly one mile in elevation to reach the 14,110-foot summit of Pikes Peak.

The truck itself has as fascinating a history as you’ll find with any race vehicle. It started life as the Sterling Pikes Peak tandem rear axle race truck. Freightliner’s parent company Daimler had purchased Ford’s big truck line in 1997 and rebranded the trucks as Sterling. Freightliner engineers, working in their off hours, engineered the chassis utilizing the company’s sophisticated design software and then built it in their “skunkworks” from late 1999 into early 2000.

Mike says he's the first driver to drift a semi truck "intentionally". Love that disclaimer!

You’re probably well aware that COE (cab over engine) truck racing is popular in Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. For the 2000 Pikes Peak competition, four-time New Zealand Class B truck racer Shane Chapman was selected to guide the Freightliner up the hill, finishing a highly-respectable second in class.

In 2001, driving chores of the Sterling were assigned to Molly Morter-Currie, who brought with her a CORR Class Championship, while Mike raced his Freightliner. Molly took home a second place finish in the tandem-axel division of the Big Rig class. Not only was Morter the first female to race a big rig up the mountain, she received the prestigious 'Rookie of the Year' award.

In a strange turn of events the truck spent the new few years at the Madras, Oregon Proving Grounds and then in a Freightliner warehouse in Portland.

Mike Ryan suffered an accident that heavily damaged his truck at Pikes Peak

Then Freightliner introduced their Cascadia model in 2008 and Mike decided to park his Mercedes powered Freightliner Century Class truck and convert the long-serving Sterling to a Detroit Diesel-powered Cascadia race truck that he’s raced and drifted (yes, drifted) from 2008-2016

In 2014, Mike had an “oh (you know what)" experience when the truck fell off the road at Pike’s Peak. As a result, the truck received a thorough rebuild where he repainted the aluminum framerails, for which Mike has spares, replaced 90% of the fasteners, turned the cross members into water tanks for the brake cooling system, installed a new water-methanol injection system, new turbo system, completely new ZF based independent front suspension, 17” Bendix vented rotor air disc brakes, new custom-built Fluidyne radiator and intercooler, freshly rebuilt custom King Shocks, new hood, bumper, windshield, paint, and about 50 other items.

The complicated plumbing arrangement for the truck's turbocharger installation

When you're turbocharging a massive diesel engine you need massive pipes

The Detroit Diesel engine currently has less than 100 break in, practice, and race miles on the it and the chassis has less than 200 miles on it since the rebuild. It is a 14-liter DDEC 5 marine based Detroit Diesel engine with a triple compounding turbo system, drawing through K&N filters, and producing approximately 2,400 HP and just north of 4,000 foot pounds of torque. It is mated to an exotic (and expensive) ZF factory built custom European Super Truck Series, 5-speed sequential “Ecomat” automatic and the truck comes with fresh a rebuilt spare. The rig roles on Accuride 22.5 x 9.25 powder coated alloy wheels, with custom compounded Michelin racing tires built on truck cases with road racing rain compound tread for both front and rear tires and it comes with spares.

With 14 class wins and 7 records in 18 years we find it hard that Mike would have trouble finding a buyer for this thing.

Real Deal’s Custom BMW R nine T Motorcycle is a Speed-Inspired Naked Beauty

Jessi Combs standing with the BMW R nine T

Jessi Combs and her stunning BMW R nine T

The BMW R nine T is a very cool motorcycle as it rolls off the Bavarian assembly line. However, an R nine T that has been modified by the creative and skillful hands of Jessi Combs and Theresa Contreras has a cool factor that is off the charts. The Real Deal co-founders unveiled their R nine T custom build at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas.

Before we get to the custom Beemer, let’s talk about the bike’s impressive builders. Jessi is a multi-talented innovator, racer, and TV personality. Her degree in custom automotive fabrication is put to spectacular use on her wide-ranging vehicular projects. She is a land speed record holder, a Baja 1000 podium finisher, and a champion of other racing disciplines.

BMW R nine T profile with K&N filter

The Real Deal BMW was designed to match the wide twin engine, and yes, that's a K&N filter

Theresa’s credentials are no less impressive. She holds a degree in fine arts from Cal Poly, but her talents go far beyond the theoretical. She is a graphic designer, a renowned custom painter, and a machinist. To cap it off, she has extensive body-shop experience.

The R nine T provided a unique and exciting challenge for the multi-talented builders. “Building an R nine T was a unique build for the both of us,” Jessi said. “While we have built plenty of motorcycles, cars, and trucks, the wide boxer engine had us designing and building outward in order to give the bike a proportionate stance, rather than trying to slim it all up.” Clearly those are the words of someone with an acute awareness of design.

 BMW R nine T seat

The seat adds to the retro-cool R nine T motif

Fittingly, the bike has design roots deeply embedded in speed. After all, Jessi has earned the moniker, ‘the fastest woman on 4-wheels,’ having logged a record speed of 398 mph with a top speed of 440 mph. "We based the bike off of a land-speed inspired theme,” said Jessi, “The custom fabricated front fairing, the RSD hub adapter for the billet wheels, and Theresa’s custom paint seem to be getting a lot of attention.” Attention indeed. The bike is a show stopper.

When asked about Real Deal’s use of K&N filters, Jessi was enthusiastic in her praise of what the products offer. “We use K&N on most of our projects,” Jessi said. The endorsement goes even farther. “I have them on all my personal vehicles. I’m not sure why anyone would have anything else!” As for the specific use of K&N filters on the R nine T, Jessi said that in addition to her trust in the performance and filtration benefits that K&N filters provide, there was also an aesthetic purpose. “On this bike we were able to get rid of the air box, so the K&N filters enhanced our ‘naked’ look.”

Fans of cool custom motorcycles are the true beneficiaries of the creative partnership of Jessi and Theresa. The R nine T build is a tribute to speed, character, and the raw beauty of performance. K&N is proud to be part of the magic!

K&N Driver Cody Swanson Honors 2 Legends with His USAC Midget Win at Santa Maria

Cody Swanson clinched victory on September 17th at the Santa Maria Raceway

Cody Swanson clinched victory on September 17th at the Santa Maria Raceway

On September 17th of this year, driver Cody Swanson clinched victory at the USAC Western States Midget race, held at the Santa Maria Raceway, in Nipomo California. In lap 25, he passed the number 11 car driven by Corey Elliott, then went on to clinch victory in the 30-lap main event. Swanson had led for 20 laps at last year's Santa Maria race, but a breakdown ultimately cost him the checkered flag.

"The Santa Maria win was huge for Cody Swanson. It was the second USAC win of his career and after a few nights of bad luck and mechanical issues, he earned the victory. His first USAC victory was at Bakersfield on 3/30/13" said Lance Jennings, an official with USAC. It was indeed an important victory, because as of this writing, Swanson now sits in 6th place in the USAC Western States Midget point standings.

It takes a crew of family and friends to prep and maintain Cody's #71S Spike/Van Dyne racer

It takes a crew of family and friends to prep and maintain Cody's #71S Spike/Van Dyne racer

Racing has always been in Cody Swanson's blood, His grandfather Chuck raced a Model A Ford on the dirt tracks of Minnesota in the 1960's, and his father Kirk (who also happens to be a Technical Development Supervisor at K&N) has been involved in off-road and dirt bike racing for many years. Naturally, Cody started racing go-carts at the age of 7, and was eventually crowned California State Champion in 2006. A year later, he was the INEX Legends Rookie of the Year, he took the VRA Midget Championship in 2012, and currently holds the track records at the Irwindale Speedway and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring. So far this year, he's had 4 Top 5 and 7 Top 10 finishes in the USAC Western States Midget Series.

With his car dialed in, Swanson was able to snatch a victory from the track that had beat him a year

With his car dialed in, Swanson was able to win at the track that had beat him a year prior

A big part of his success this year has been due to his #71S midget car. It takes a crew of family and friends to prep and maintain Cody's Spike/Van Dyne racer, and anything that reduces the maintenance time, can also help reduce lap times. That's why Swanson Motorsports uses K&N filters like the 81-1005 stainless inline fuel filter, the HP-3002 heavy duty wrench-off oil filter, and the 100-8576 carbon fiber air box. These are designed specifically for racing and heavy duty applications, so they can be quickly cleaned and re-installed by Cody's volunteer pit crew.

With his car dialed in, Swanson was able to snatch a victory from the track that had beat him a year before. But the Santa Maria win was important for another reason. You see, 2016 was a tough year for both Cody's family, and the USAC family. Earlier in the year, Cody's father in-law Kelvin Campbell lost his battle with cancer, leaving a hole in the Swanson team. USAC driver Brian Clausen also lost his life in a tragic accident at the Belleville Nationals, leaving a hole in the tight-knit racing community. These two men had a major impact on a lot of people, which is why Cody dedicated his hard fought victory to both of them.

This 26-year-old driver has a big heart, and an incredible amount of talent behind the wheel. We at K&N are proud to sponsor Swanson Motorsports, and look forward to watching Cody Swanson compete November 24th (Thanksgiving night) at the USAC National Midget Series Turkey Night Grand Prix. This thrilling 98-lap race will be held at the Ventura Speedway in Ventura California, so get your tickets before they sell out.

Kawasaki Z750, Z800, and Z1000 Get Airflow Boost from K&N KA-1003 Air Filter

K&N KA-1003 Air Filter

The KA-1003 air filter is a direct replacement for the restrictive stock air filter

Naked is good. Get your mind out of the gutter – I am referring to naked (un-faired) motorcycles. The Kawasaki Z-series is a great naked bike in all of its variations, which have been produced from 2003-2016. Whether you ride the 750, the 800, or the big 1000, your street-fighter will benefit from the installation of the K&N KA-1003 replacement air filter.

The filter is designed to increase airflow to Kawasaki’s inline four cylinder engine. This decrease in intake restriction allows the Z-series to breathe more freely. The likely result is a noticeable boost in the bike's performance. Every K&N filter is designed to increase horsepower and torque with the most notable byproduct being livelier throttle response. The performance benefits of the K&N air filter will be even more pronounced if you have installed an aftermarket exhaust or slip-on muffler.

K&N KA-1003 Air Filter Box

The K&N KA-1003 Air Filter is pre-oiled and ready to use out of the box

In addition to an increase in airflow, the K&N KA-1003 offers a double handful of other benefits that make riding even more fun and convenient. The filter’s pleated cotton gauze media provides a large filtration area that extends service intervals. When it is time to clean the unit, the process is simple and quick using the K&N 99-5000 service kit that includes all that is needed to clean and re-oil the filter. This reusability means that the KA-1003 is the last filter you’ll need to buy for your Kawasaki. It puts an end to the costly and wasteful cycle of buying and disposing of paper filters.

Finally, the KA-1003 offers excellent filtration to protect the Z-series engine. The oiled, cotton gauze material is an ultra-effective air cleaning system. The KA-1003’s base seal and sealing bead are carefully engineered to prevent unfiltered air from making its way around the filter element. All of this adds up to an easy-to-install, drop in filter that does everything well. Out of the box, the filter is pre-oiled and ready to install in the factory Kawasaki air box.

The filter is made in the USA and is backed by K&N’s industry-leading 10-year/Million-Mile Limited Warranty. The KA-1003 is for you if your bike is on the application list below. For all of your air filter, oil filter, and intake needs, consult K&N’s easy-to-navigate online search tool.

2016 Toyota Tacoma Air Intake Designed to Boost Horsepower and Throttle Response

The K&N 71-9039 permits the engine to grab more air than the factory intake permitted.

The K&N 71-9039 air intake is designed to replace the restrictive factory air filter and intake.

First unveiled in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma is a compact pickup truck that is fundamentally a Toyota Hilux that has been modified and renamed for the North American market.

Three engines were available to power the vehicle. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 142-horsepower and 160 lb-ft (217 N-m) of torque, a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 150-horsepower and 177 lb-ft (240 N-m) of torque, and a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 190-horsepower and 220-lb-ft of torque

Available as a four-wheel or two-wheel drive vehicle, it is designed to take on a 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual transmission and comes in two cab configurations: Regular Cab and Xtracab.

The Tacoma is now in its third generation. The 2016 model comes with a choice of either a crew cab or extended cab as well as a choice of four-wheel or two-wheel drive. Off-road enthusiasts would be glad to see that the TRD off-road model with automatic transmission is being offered this year. Engine choices include a 2.7-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V-6. A new 6-speed transmission is available to go with either engine. Four-wheel drive models can come with a manual gearbox as well.

K&N offers the K&N 71-9039 Blackhawk Induction air intake system for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. The intake system is designed to improve horsepower, throttle response, and engine sound. Estimated horsepower gain is 15.57 at 5446 rpm.

The K&N 71-9039 air intake system for the 2016 Toyota Tacoma.

The K&N 71-9039 air intake system includes a K&N RU-3102HBK washable and reusable air filter

Power is improved due to a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube that accommodates the factory mass air sensor and crankcase vent hose and round tapered universal rubber air filter with a Dryflow oil-free synthetic media. The filter can be washed after up to 100,000 miles of driving, depending on driving conditions. K&N offers an air filter cleaning kit that is specially formulated to cleanse the filter when needed.

The cold air intake system is designed to replace the restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing on the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. The low restrictive air intake permits the engine to grab a larger amount of air than the stock air intake permitted.

The tube is black powder-coated and includes a welded, engraved K&N plate for a clean, high performance appearance. It also features a heat shield that blocks hot engine air from entering the intake assuring that cool air gets into the engine.

The air intake system can be installed in about 90 minutes using common household hand tools. It is designed and engineered to allow you to use the existing factory mounting points.

The K&N 71-9039 air intake system is designed to fit the following vehicle applications:
