Super Hooligan Flat Track Series Off to a Roaring Start in 2017

Super Hooligan checkered flag

K&N is proud to be a major sponsor of the exciting Super Hooligan National Championship series

The 2017 Super Hooligan National Championship Series (SHNC) kicked off its exciting season in February. Roland Sands Designs has brought back the popular and raucous spectacle that pits riders piloting street bikes at break-neck speeds around tracks of dirt and concrete.

K&N is proud to be part of the racing series that will be staged across the nation in association with some of the greatest events in motorcycling. In addition to partnering with American Pro Flat Track, the SHNC will make stops at iconic gatherings like the 2017 Sturgis Rally at the Buffalo Chip TT in Sturgis, South Dakota.

So what exactly is Super Hooligan racing? Roland Sands is quick to focus the spotlight on the mixed bag of riders that risk life and limb on the racing oval.

The beautiful FTR750 Factory Indian Scout is the Grand prize in the SHNC series

“The riders are the stars, comprised of a unique and diverse background of every type of rider, from washed up champions to plumbers, crusty flat trackers and roadracers, as well as everyday Joes, nine-to-fivers, stunt and motocross riders, and everything in between.”

The bikes used in the series are behemoths originally intended for street duty, not dirt-specific racing hardware. SHNC rules limit the bikes to 750CC and larger twins, in stock frames with dirt track tires and no front brakes.

“It’s a no-holds-barred battle to the stripe on 500 pounds of fury,” Sands says. “With races across the country ranging from specialty bike shows and concerts to Pro American Flat Track events and beach-side racing, the diversity promises a unique experience at each event. Indian Motorcycle has generously offered up its crown jewel, the FTR750 Factory Indian Scout GNC-ready race bike as the championship prize.”

The first two stops of the SHNC exemplified just how unique and diverse the tracks on which the racers compete really are. Here is a quick rundown of the results in the first two rounds:

Round 1: The 1 Pro Flat Track - Salem, Oregon

In association with the annual The 1 Moto Show Custom Motorcycle Show in Portland, The 1 Pro flat track races commenced once again on the 1/10th mile banked clay oval at Salem Indoor Speedway. Sammy Halbert won the event on his #69 RSD Indian Scout. Brad Spencer from San Jose. California was the runner up on his #7 Sportster. Andy DiBrino from Portland, Oregon piloted his See See Motorcycles XG750 to a number 3 finish. The field fought bar-to-bar, putting on a show for the spectators. Everyone was on the edge of their seats watching what was one of the best Super Hooligan races to date.

Round 2: Mama Tried's Flat Out Friday - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Grassroots racing got sticky and brought out over 10,000 fans to watch a bunch of motorcycles turn left and beat themselves up for bragging rights at the biannual Flat Out Friday races. The racing was staged on a truly unique track. An indoor, Dr. Pepper-syrup-soaked concrete oval was prepared at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was Benny Carlson who took home the top spot aboard his XR1200. In paint-swapping action, Andy DiBrino and his XG750 took second, and Terry Vestal raced his Sportster to a third place finish.

These Girls are on Fire! K&N Teryx Girls Are Back to Conquer King of the Hammers

K&N's Sara Price and Erica Sacks killed in out on the King of the Hammers course

It’s early February 2017 and for off-roaders and their fans, all sights are set on the Means Dry Lake Bed at the Johnson Valley Off Highway Recreation Area, located in Lucerne County, California, home to the legendary event known as King of the Hammers.

For almost ten years now, competitors, race teams, and spectators have converged upon this makeshift, pop up town, Hammertown, to bear witness to some of off-roading’s most exciting racing known around the world. With five events to compete in, or simply watch, what started as the brainchild of promoters Dave Cole and Jeff Knoll, King of the Hammers has grown from a word of mouth rock-crawling, high speed open desert competition for 12 teams racing for beer and bragging rights, to a world class event. The race boasts more than 300 race teams and close to 45,000 spectators. This event can be seen on multiple continents around the world from the BBC to NBC Sports channels, plus any number of indie off road channels that can be found on YouTube.

Responsible for spotting, winching, and getting the team through rough spots, Erica Sacks is a pro

Some of the King of the Hammer events include the now Saturday/Sunday King of the Motos race; Monday nights Vision X Shootout - think of drag racing up a boulder strewn canyon with a prize purse of $10,000; the Can-Am King of the Hammers UTV Race presented by RCV on Wednesday; the SmittyBilt Every Man Challenge come Thursday; with the mac daddy of them all, the Ultra4 Racing King of the Hammers rounding out the week on Friday. Talk about an incredible week of racing!

Having competed last year and outted early because of mechanical failure, the Teryx Girls, K&N team driver Sara Price and K&N team co-driver Erica Sacks are back and looking for redemption in the 2017 Can-Am King of the Hammers UTV race. The Teryx Girls have been thinking of Hammertown for the last 12 months, looking to better their result from last year. Touted as the toughest one day off-road race on the planet the duo wowed the thousands of spectators in Johnson Valley, California, last year as they sped through open desert and found unique lines through some of the technical rock crawling sections of the course.

The duo started 20th and came out of the desert section in 12th position heading into the trails, soon picking off enough cars to run in a 5th place spot before mechanical failure ended their race day early. “From the moment we realized we weren’t going to finish last year, we’ve been thinking about how this year we were going to get the job done,” said Price. “We could hear everyone cheering for the Teryx Girls last year and I expect we will see even more fans out in Johnson Valley this week. This race is as tough as they come and I know Teryx is up for the challenge.”

Sara qualified the only 800cc to compete in the UTV Class on Saturday, February 4th, securing an impressive 20th starting position against 46 challengers from that day, with a total of 70 entrants in the class. The IMG Motorsports-built Kawasaki Teryx side by side, specifically built for the King Of the Hammers, retained a large percentage of stock parts as a result of Kawasaki’s proven strength, performance, and reliability. After qualifying they spent hours on end making adjustments to their side by side before race day. Their efforts paid off, as they had no mechanical issues pop up during the race.

The rock crawling section can easily topple side by sides. Here the Teryx Girls rolled in Backdoor

The only all-female team competing during KOH week, Sara Price and Erica Sacks aren’t newcomers to the sport of off-roading! Price, a former X Games competitor and Supercross racer, is also the first female Stadium Super Trucks driver. Sacks is a co-driver on rally races and competed in 2015 with Sara in the all-women’s Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc in Morocco.

Sara has made her mark by not only making history in her racing endeavors but also in the Motocross Industry by being the first ever factory supported female racer under Monster Energy Kawasaki and an X Games medalist. Being determined and hardworking she is shooting her sights in a new direction as still continuing her racing in motocross but tackling an all new kind of racing as an off road race car driver. Being a young business lady and role model, she is always striving for the best and always giving back to her community. Sara strives to stay fabulous as being a host at special events and on camera as a spokeswoman. With no fear she recently competed in beauty pageants to prove a point that women can be attractive and be just as good as the men on the track. Sara has recently ventured into stunts, striving to break into the film industry as her new goal aside from racing.

A quick recovery got the Teryx Girls heading the right direction out of Backdoor

K&N’s Sara Price and Erica Sacks teamed up to be the first ever American SxS team in the toughest all-female sporting event on the planet where they took on the grueling race in the deserts of Morocco, in 2015 at the 25th Anniversary of the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles. The ladies competed in a factory supported Kawasaki Teryx® Side by Side built by IMG Motorsports.

The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is a 9-day race located in Morocco, Africa, where approximately 160 teams and 300 competitors come together to tackle the desert without aid of GPS. Using only outdated maps, teams are forced to navigate the terrain with nothing but a compass and a will to succeed. They navigate with the goal of traveling the shortest distance from Point A to Point B, ranging anywhere from 700 miles to 3,000 miles. The navigational challenge was a true test for the Kawasaki IMG Motorsports team.

Photo of Co-Driver, Erica Sacks, spotting as Sara takes on the tough terrain.

Without a capable co-driver races like KOH & Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc would be impossible

Sacks has over 17 years of off-road racing experience. She has been all over Baja and has raced the longest race in the US, The Best in the Desert Vegas to Reno at right around 545 miles! This advantage has provided the knowledge necessary to compete in this extraordinary event. Erica has competed in a host of off-road vehicles from trophy karts to Class 1 cars, and has garnered experience and navigational skills having competed in the most prestige races held in Baja. Prior to the Rallye she earned a podium finish in a UTV at the 2014 Lake Elsinore Grand Prix.

The Can-Am King of the Hammers UTV event was dominated by the Campbell family, and it was the third straight year with a different winner after years of the event being dominated by the six time winner, Mitch Guthrie.

K&N's Sara Price sharing her passion with some amazing young riders

With only one set back, having rolled at Backdoor, they were able to maintain a two position move up to finish the race in 18th place overall. This was quite an impressive accomplishment for the Teryx Girls in the 800cc side by side, considering the were up against turbos and 1000cc vehicles.

“We did it! We completed the Can-Am King Of The Hammers UTV Race presented by RCV!” We rolled early on but recovered quickly and didn't have a single mechanical failure on our Kawasaki Teryx! Our top speed isn't close to our competition but we drove hard and made up the time we lost in the desert in the rocks where "Billy Goat" shines! We started 20th and was the 14th car across the finish line with time corrected 18th overall out of 81 cars!” Sara Price proclaimed.

Congratulations to Sara Price and Erica Sacks for their amazing accomplishments. We are super excited to see what the 2017 race season brings for these incredible women in racing.

The Sky's The Limit For Hybrid Off-Road/Aircraft Vehicle

The off-road portion of the SkyRunner is powered by a Polaris Prostar engine.

A Polaris Prostar 952cc SOHC v-Twin Engine powers the off-road vehicle portion of the SkyRunner

The thrill of riding an off-road vehicle through the roughest of terrain should make any extreme sport enthusiast flush with excitement. Add the ability for an off-road vehicle to take to the sky, then that must be a dream for that previously mentioned extreme sportster.

There is a vehicle that can do just that. It’s called the SkyRunner and it’s from the imagination of Stewart Hamel, CEO of SkyRunner in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The inspiration for the SkyRunner was a skydiving accident during which Hamel dislocated his arm and was forced to give up his skydiving hobby. He used to skydive every weekend.

“I had suffered a posterior dislocation of my arm. As a result, it kept popping out whenever I was stabilized during a skydive,” he said.

Hamel has been working on the machine for about four years.

“It was originally supposed to be a personal toy for my kids and I to ride at my ranch in Colorado,” said Hamel. “Something I could drive around and fly around the property. As a pilot I respected the safety record of the parafoil wing. Little did I know there was a demand by so many for a powersport aircraft. I got a lot of feedback from operators and special forces.”

Due to all the interest, Hamel hired some off-road and aviation consultants and he got some money from his own small private capital venture company and started developing the vehicle.

He established a Facebook page that attracted more feedback and things just started to come together.

“I listened to people who were interested in the project’s values. Some individuals wanted a toy and then there were some who saw it as a tool. This group included ranchers and government agencies. What they wanted was something that was simple, redundant, versatile, low maintenance and serviceable,” said Hamel.

Putting a lot of emphasis on the serviceability, Hamel searched out an off-road brand that had dealerships all over the world so a person could drop the vehicle off somewhere convenient to be serviced and where they could go to buy parts when they needed them. Hamel noted that the vehicle has 38 parts. He aligned the project with Polaris, an off-road vehicle manufacturer with more than 1800 dealerships around the world and Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), a multinational aerospace and transportation company that manufactures Rotax, the most popular light-sport aircraft engine in the world. Hamel noted that the post-sale experience and convenient serviceability would be important to customers.

The aircraft portion of the SkyRunner is powered by a Bombardier Rotax 4-cylinder engine.

A Bombardier Rotax turbocharged 121cc 4-cylinder engine runs the aircraft portion of the SkyRunner

He used the same philosophy to source out other parts for the vehicle and that is when he selected K&N to provide the ground engine’s air filters.

The SkyRunner uses two K&N RC-1200 universal clamp-on air filters on the ground engine.

“K&N products are all over the place,” Hamel said. “I am also familiar with them because they are heavily involved in off-roading, which is a big part of the recreation that takes place in this part of the country. I also have K&N filters in my personal truck,” he said.

The SkyRunner is an off-road vehicle similar to what one would see competing at the Baja 1000 race. It features a 74-inch wheelbase, a total length of 156-inches, height of 75-inches and width of 73-inches. It includes a Polaris Prostar 952cc SOHC v-Twin engine for ground transportation in front and a Bombardier Rotax turbocharged 1211cc 4-cylinder engine for flying in the rear.

The Prostar produces 89-horsepower and the Rotax offers 115-horsepower.

Maximum ground cruising speed is 70 mph and maximum air cruising speed is 40 mph. Maximum ground range is 240 miles and maximum air range is 120 miles. It needs 450 feet to takeoff and 400 feet to land. It has a restricted operating altitude of 10,000-feet.

It has received Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) S-LSA approval. This means SkyRunner can be manufactured and sold ready-to-fly direct from the factory, rather than assembled by the owner as a kit.

The vehicle seats two. Ground instrumentation is on the right side of the steering wheel and aircraft instrumentation is on the left side. So whether you wish to drive or fly, one simple sequence works for both – 1) Flip 2) Start 3) Engage.

Each engine operates independently and so only one engine is needed at a time.

Hamel noted that ranchers, people, and companies that need an aircraft to fly short range, border security agencies, and, of course, people looking for a personal toy are buying it. The price is $139,000.

Hamel added that SkyRunner is creating its own dealer network.

“We’re getting dealer interest in Alaska, Southern California, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, and Orlando,” said Hamel.

Most of the interest in the United States is coming from the south and west, noted Hamel.

The SkyRunner includes two K&N RC-1200 Universal Clamp-on Air Filters.

The off-road Prostar engine includes two K&N RC-1200 universal clamp-on air filters

“We’ve had people from the northeast come and take a look, but there are not a lot of places in that location to fly it,” he said.

Hamel expects to deliver 700 vehicles each year globally within the next four years.

“Currently, we’re building four units per month with a production capacity for 10. The hallmark of our production is our quality control and ability to scale production. In four months and nine new employees, we can grow from 10 to 20 aircraft per month,” said Hamel.

The SkyRunner vehicle is manufactured in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Hamel added that some options are becoming available including hubs and titanium brake rotors. He pointed out that the company will be launching its own adventure gear and apparel in March.

K&N Air Filter for 2017 Hyundai Elantra Enhances Airflow

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is designed for the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is designed to fit into the factory air box of the 2017 Hyundai Elantra.

After it acquired 51% of rival Kia Motors, the second largest auto manufacturer in Korea, The Hyundai Motor Group became the largest automaker in Korea, the second largest automaker in Asia and the fourth largest automobile manufacturer in the world.

One of Hyundai’s most popular models, the Elantra, is a four-door compact sedan that debuted in 1990.

A Mitsubishi-designed 1.6-liter straight-four DOHC 16-valve engine was used to power the first generation (1990-1995) model. It produced 113 horsepower (84 kW) at 6,000 rpm and accelerated from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. Hyundai claimed that the car’s top speed was 116 mph (187 km/h).

Other engines that powered the first incarnation of the Elantra include a 1.5-liter I4 and a 1.8-liter I4 gasoline engines. Two transmissions were available –- a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic.

Now in its sixth generation (2016-present), the Elantra is available with a choice of four gasoline and one diesel engines –- a 1.4-liter Kappa I4, a 1.6-liter Gamma I4, 1.6-liter Gamma G4FJ I4 turbocharged and a 2.0-liter Nu I4 rounds out the gasoline version and a 1.6-liter U2 I4 turbocharged is the only diesel-powered engine. There are three transmissions –- a 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual, and a 7-speed DCT.

The K&N 33-5050 replacement air filter is designed to enhance the airflow as well as the protection of the engines in the Elantra regardless of whether it is the 1.4-liter or the 2.0-liter that is powering it.

The filter features a multilayered cotton gauze media that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil, which makes the strands of the cotton gauze very sticky. This permits the media to catch and hold contaminant particles. The filter is also washable and reusable and lasts up to 50,000 miles between cleanings.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter measures 1" high, 9-1/2" long and a little less than 6-1/2&

The K&N 33-5050 air filter is only 1" high.

K&N also offers the 99-5000 filter care service kit that is formulated to clean and recharge the filter so that it can perform for another 50,000 miles and can be used over and over again. In fact, the air filter will perform for as long as you own your car.

K&N is so sure of the quality of the filter it backs it with a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. The promise guarantees that the air filter will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement.

The construction of the media also ensures excellent airflow. As more and more particles are captured, the airflow is not restricted and continues through permitting the K&N filter to last longer than other filters. Another benefit is the K&N air filter will not void the vehicle warranty and it will work with OEM vehicle electronics.

It is designed to fit into the existing factory air box. Installation is very easy. All you have to do is remove the old used filter and replace it with the K&N filter. The installation takes just a few minutes and you can use common hand tools to do the job.

The K&N 33-5050 air filter fits the following vehicles:
