While the Ram name began to be used in 1981, the trucks to which the named was affixed were largely upgraded versions of the Dodge D Series which debuted in 1972. What many consider to be the first true Ram truck for the 1994 model year. Its design not only broke with the past but separated it from other pickups of the time, with its “big rig” truck styling.

This is considered the Second Generation of Ram 1500, and was produced until 2001. The new design and the truck underneath it completely up-ended the pickup truck market, with Ram sales going from 78,000 units in 1993 to 240,000 in 1994 and 410,000 in 1995. Engines offered in the 1994 – 2001 Ram 1500 carried over from the first generation Ram and included the 3.9L V6, 5.2L V8, and 5.9L V8. In the middle of the model run, the RAM 1500 5.9L Magnum V8 was upgraded from 230 horsepower to 245 horsepower.

The third generation Ram 1500 bowed for the 2002 model year. The third generation featured an all-new frame, suspension, interiors, sheet metal, and engines. Dodge replaced the 3.9L V6, which was based on the old 318 V8 LA design, with a more modern 3.7L Magnum V6. The Magnum 4.7L V8 was revised several times during the third gen, and then after two years, the 5.9L Magnum was replaced by the 5.7L Hemi V8. In addition, from 2002 – 2007 Dodge offered the Viper V10 engine in a RAM and marketed it as the SRT-10.

The fourth generation Ram was unveiled at the 2008 Detroit Show. Features added for the 2009 model included a new four-door cab, a five-link coil spring rear suspension on the 1500, a new available Hemi engine, and the Rambox, which provides for secure storage inside the truck’s bed walls. For the 2014 model year a 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel was added to the engine options for the 1500. The fourth generation Ram remains in production at least through the 2017 model year.

K&N Performance Air Intake Systems Intake

The intake system of new cars and trucks is often compromised and as a result doesn't deliver as much fresh air as the engine can draw. The wrench-off oil filters are a canister oil filter with a twist. At the top of the range is the K&N washable and reusable billet automotive oil filter. The filter housings are machined from 6061 T6 billet aluminum for strength and durability. The filter is finished in a stainless steel micro-sheen and Neodymium magnets are embedded in the canister to remove harmful metallic debris.
