K&N American Made Replacement Air Filters Are Designed To Last One Million Miles
- Sep 30, 2015
In the early 1960's Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, American racers who ran a motorcycle dealership and sold motorcycle accessories, became irritated with restrictive air filters that quickly became clogged. Their frustration inspired innovation and the washable / reusable K&N high-flow American made air filter was born. Instead of a typical paper media, K&N's traditional high-flow air filters are designed with 4-6 layers of premium cotton gauze pleated between coated wire screen mesh. Cotton naturally breathes easier than paper which increases airflow, reduces restriction, and can help an engine run better. K&N's secret to increased airflow without sacrificing engine protection lies in the specially designed K&N air filter oil suspended within thousands of microscopic cotton fibers.
K&N replacement air filters are designed and manufactured in the United States at K&N's world headquarters in Riverside, California. The cotton gauze media and sturdy construction allow K&N air filters to be cleaned time and again. By using a K&N Recharger service kit, K&N air filters can be made to perform virtually like new. Washing and reusing a K&N air filter will save money over time when compared to buying paper air filters and helps reduce the waste associated with disposable filters. K&N air filters are American made and built to last. K&N has seen replacement K&N air filters used for over one-million miles.
K&N's Riverside, California based in-house research and development team designs a K&N air filter using computer aided drafting software for a precise fit inside the stock air filter box. K&N doesn't use the stock air filter during the design process except as a comparison for airflow and efficiency testing. Using a first article sample of an air filter, K&N's on-site air filtration efficiency testing lab tests each new air filter following ISO5011 testing protocols to ensure superior airflow and outstanding engine protection. K&N's world famous high-flow cotton gauze media is pleated and trimmed to specific dimensions and pleat count using up to 6 layers of cotton in specially designed standard or tight weave varieties. To build a K&N American air filter, employees load air filter molds and filter media into specially designed K&N machines. After a K&N air filter is removed from the mold, excess plastisol or urethane material is trimmed by hand. Most K&N air filters come pre-oiled from the U.S. based factory with a precise amount of oil applied to each part number based on the amount of cotton being used. After final packaging K&N air filters are boxed up and ready to be installed. In most cases a K&N replacement air filter can be installed without the use of tools in less than five minutes. In addition to standard replacement air filters, K&N performance air filters are used in almost every form of motorsports and undergo an entirely different level of testing not found in everyday driving. K&N has the confidence to guaranty its American made air filters for 10-years or one million miles. Additionally, K&N stands behind its products with a consumer protection pledge.
