Challenger SRT8, 300C SRT8 and Charger SRT8 with K&N Air Intake Add Street-Legal Horsepower
- May 18, 2016
Thanks to the leadership at Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler was able to start making big, Hemi powered rear-wheel drive cars in the early 2000s. A few years later, the skunkworks engineers at SRT decided to double-down on the wildly popular Hemi engine, by creating a massive, 392 cubic-inch, 6.4L Hemi V8. This angry volcano spewed well north of 400-hp, and it could instantly turn a set of rear tires into a screaming cloud of smoke. Naturally, they shoehorned it into some of their best-selling models, creating the 2011-2014 Dodge Challenger SRT, 2012-2014 Chrysler 300C SRT, and 2012-2014 Dodge Charger SRT. These attitude-challenged monsters aren't for the faint of heart, and they have no qualms about humiliating Chevy and Ford drivers when the stoplight turns green. But if you want to go full "beast mode", without pissing off the smog inspectors, then you've got to check out the 50-state legal K&N 57-1565 performance intake system.
Hemi 101Since you already own a Challenger SRT8, 300C SRT8, or Charger SRT8, this probably isn't new information. But it bears repeating. The 6.4L Hemi V8 makes power by burning a mixture of air and gasoline inside the cylinders. The valves are positioned at the sides of the hemispherical head, so the air will swirl around as it enters the combustion chamber, allowing it to mix with the gas more completely. The concave head and domed pistons then work together to pressurize the perfectly blended fuel/air mixture, and hold in heat during detonation. That way, more of the fuel gets burned and more energy and horsepower released. To increase the horsepower and torque in a 392 Hemi, all you have to do is add lots of cold air. If you were paying attention in middle school, then you'll probably remember that cold air contains more oxygen molecules than warm air. This will create a stronger explosion when the gasoline detonates, and the heat-holding function of the Hemi heads allow even more power to be extracted from the same amount of fuel. How to Increase Hemi Horsepower
The K&N 57-1565 FIPK performance intake system is designed to increase horsepower and torque, by providing your 392ci Hemi with a steady supply of cold air. To do this, the restrictive factory air box is replaced by an oversized K&N performance air filter, which is protected from hot engine bay air by a special heat shield that seals against the underside of the hood. The K&N air filter is made from an oil-treated cotton gauze material that can stop dirt particles that are the diameter of a human hair. The red oil then soaks into the dirt, causing it to actually catch and hold other dirt even when the filter gets dirty (depending on road conditions, it can go up to 100,000 miles before it needs to be cleaned). Once the cold air coming up from below the motor gets cleaned, it's sent to the engine by a large-diameter K&N intake tube, which has been roto-molded to provide an unobstructed airflow path. It also has integrated fittings for the factory air temperature sensor and crank case vent hose, which preserves the factory emission system settings. This plug-and-play design requires no underhood modifications, and the entire system can usually be installed in about 90 minutes. Once the K&N 57-1565 performance intake kit was fully developed, K&N installed it on a stock 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8. Dyno testing showed 416.11 horsepower and 435.69 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels, which equaled an estimated increase of 21.95 horsepower and 17.53 lb-ft of torque. Because the K&N 57-1565 performance intake system is able to increase horsepower without modifying the emissions system, this cold air intake kit is street legal in all 50 states. Each system is issued an Exemption Order (EO) number by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to validate its compliance with state laws. It also comes with a special underhood decal, so the smog inspectors won't hassle you about it when they open the hood. Plus, the entire system is backed by the K&N 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. K&N also makes other 392ci Hemi cold air intake systems, along with many other Chrysler and Dodge performance parts.
