Canadian Quick Rod Title Puts Ron Folk in IHRA Tournament of Champions
- Aug 3, 2009
Former Quick Rod World Champion Ron Folk earned a spot in the season ending IHRA Tournament of Champions. Folk earned a bid in the elite shootout by advancing through five rounds of competition at the Mopar IHRA Canadian Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex in Ontario. Folk won at the wheel of his Folk Race Cars dragster with K&N products. The victory in Canada was the first of the 2009
campaign for Ron Folk, the patriarch of the Folk Racing Family.
Ron Folk earned his victory with a final round title over Kathy Fisher. In the late rounds, Folk also knocked off Gary Fleenor and Lisa Bingham to earn the bye-run with only three cars remaining.
Defending Stock World Champion Nick Folk will also join his father Ron Folk at the Tournament of Champions runoff in Rockingham, North Carolina. Nick earned a seed in the Stock category. Nick’s older brother and fellow IHRA World Champion Brian Folk also earned a victory at Byron Illinois Dragway IHRA event and collected a Top Dragster win in the opening Pro-Am competition of the weekend. The Folk family uses K&N Products on all their vehicles. “Our K&N air and oil filters are the best on the market,” said Folk. “The dirt stays out of our engines and the filtration is great for a big competitive edge that helps our family get to the Winner’s Circle.”
The Folk’s have already earned two automatic bids into the Tournament of Champions and still hope to earn multiple additional seeds into the event. All national and sportsman national event winners earn and automatic slot in the runoff, along with the top three finishers in each division for each category of competition. There is a $10,000 prize for each category, Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Super Stock, Stock, Quick Rod, Super Rod and Hot Rod.
Brian Folk is currently in the fourth position in Division 5 Top Dragster standings and Ron is clinging to the third spot in Division 5 Super Rod. Brian and Nick each have a shot of getting into the program in Super Rod and Super Stock, where both are currently eight in division standings.
“Like just about everyone, I’m not really sold on the Tournament of Champions format,” said Ron Folk. “I guess with it being the first year for the program everyone is a little skeptical. But I will say that I’m certainly excited to have qualified and know that I will be part of it.”
