Big Money at Stake in 54th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico, California
- Sep 5, 2007
The crown jewel of west coast sprint car racing is the World of Outlaws 54th
Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico,
California. A $50,000 prize is for the taking after Saturday night’s 40-lap A
Feature.
Donny Schatz has been the driver to beat in 2007 when big money is on the line. “We’re really looking forward to this year’s Gold Cup and being part of the excitement,” said Schatz, who won the 2004 Gold Cup Race of Champions. “Any time you get more than 100 cars trying for 24 spots, the atmosphere gets pretty electric. We’ve been fortunate to win the race in the past and would certainly like to add another Gold Cup trophy to our collection.”

Donny Schatz wins the $50,000 Kings Royal
The Fargo, North Dakota resident swept the “Month of Money” starting with the $50,000 Kings Royal presented by Crown Royal, and continuing with the $30,000 Cleveland Brothers CAT Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup, $20,000 Cleveland Brothers CAT Summer Nationals and the $150,000 Super Clean Knoxville Nationals on August 11th.
“We are fortunate to work with such great product sponsors like K&N Filters and without them we wouldn’t be here,” said Schatz. “The folks at K&N Engineering build a Carbon Airbox that is second to none. When you are racing, you have to be totally confident in all of your components.”
Schatz is the 2006 World of Outlaws Champion and leads the 2007 World of Outlaws Series with 56 top ten finishes in 62 starts.
“We’ve been very consistent all season, but the last couple of weeks our consistency has been running in the top ten instead of the top three,” said Schatz. “We want to win, and that is our goal starting this Thursday. Win everything, from hot laps to qualifying to the heat race along with the Crane Cams Dash and Preliminary Feature.
The Gold Cup Race of Champions field will be spilt into two groups with half racing on Thursday and the other half racing on Friday. Points will be totaled for qualifying, heat race finish and preliminary finish. Saturday’s feature line ups will be based on points and the car with the most points starts on the pole.
SPEED TV will tape Saturday’s finale and air it on September 16th.
