2015, 2016 Ford Mustang GT K&N Blackhawk Induction Air Intake System Raises Horsepower
- Jun 16, 2016
When the current Mustang was launched as a 2015 model, it was a game changer. Not only did the styling take the Mustang theme several steps into the future, there were a number of improvements in the drivetrain, the structure was more robust, and for the first time, an independent rear suspension came as standard equipment. The V8 engine of the GT, evolved from the DOHC Coyote motor, now produced 435 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. of torque, squeezed from a motor barely 5.0 liters in capacity (pretty impressive as that's about as much power as the Ford factory race team managed for the full-race 1970 SCCA Trans-Am Series Boss 302). Ford states that the 435 horsepower was recorded running 93 octane fuel. The engine is capable of running on 87 octane, Ford says, but with a reduction of horsepower.
If you own a 2015 or 2016 Ford Mustang GT and you're tired of paying through the nose for premium gasoline, K&N has a solution: the 71-3535 Blackhawk induction air system that increases both the power and the torque of your 'Stang, no matter whether you fill-up with premium or regular. The K&N 71-3535 cold air intake system replaces the restrictive factory air filter and air intake housing on 2015 and 2016 Ford Mustang GT models. It functions by both lowering restriction to air flow (by replacing the narrow factory system) as well as increasing the volume of oxygen fed into your Mustang's motor. The engine's ECU recognizes the increase in available oxygen and adjusts the amount of fuel the injectors squirt into each cylinder. More oxygen combined with more fuel make for a more powerful combustion inside the cylinder, raising both horsepower and torque. But by how much? In dyno testing, an otherwise stock 2015 Mustang GT recorded a rear-wheel increase of an estimated 18.68 horsepower and 11.41 ft-lb of torque, the only difference between the two was the installation of a K&N 71-3535 intake system. The K&N Blackhawk induction system is designed to be both efficient and stylish. All components are black, to maintain a premium appearance under the hood, including the K&N Dryflow air filter with heat shield. The attractive textured black powder-coated intake tube features an engraved K&N plate welded to the pipe so when you raise the hood on cruise night, everyone can see you bought the original and the best in high performance filtration.
Installation takes about 90 minutes, as the 71-3535 intake system is engineered to attach via the existing factory mounting points and the kit includes all required hardware. Nothing complicated or unique is required for installation - just tools commonly found in most tool boxes. The intake tube has all the appropriate connections for the factory mass airflow (MAF) sensor as well as the crankcase vent, idle bypass, and EVAP connection. The oversized cone shaped air filter is made from K&N's Dryflow oil-free synthetic filter media that can be driven up to 100,000 miles (depending upon your conditions) before cleaning is required. And cleaning requires only K&N's 99-0624 synthetic air filter cleaner, which comes in a convenient pump spray bottle. Just spray on to loosen dirt and grime and rinse with water. No need to re-oil the filter. Once dry, it can go back in the car. And the filter is designed to last for the lifetime of your Mustang, which K&N guarantees will perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without requiring replacement.
