2013 - 2016 Porsche Boxster with K&N E-0666 Replacement Air Filter Gains Performance Boost
- Feb 18, 2016
For an entry-level Porsche that got its start in 1996, the third-generation Boxster in its 2013 complete redesign, is arguably still more pure than any sports car on the road. That the car has been driven a lot since then would be pure understatement. More than 300,000 Boxsters have been sold since 1996, making it one of the most-recognized in the world. Keeping it road worthy has been the driver's attention to engine health, maintained and enhanced with replacement air filters, in this case two E-0666 filters from K&N Filters.
For the Boxster's redesign, engineers kept the normally aspirated flat-6 engine with a standard 6-speed manual gearbox and added a reworked chassis and suspension for increased stability at higher speeds; a completely new interior with the feel of the Panamera, and a convertible roof with new sound-deadening technology. The body styling gave the car additional length and width, more interior room for taller drivers, arched wheel wells for 19-in. rims, and a weight reduction of 77 lbs. in the S and 55 lb. for the base. There are engine options between the base 2.7-liter and the S model's 3.4-liter. Both offer the standard 6-speed manual or 7-speed double-clutch gearboxes, both of which are equipped with a switchable stop-start function plus brake energy recuperation, another example of excellent thoughtful German automotive innovation. These motors are fed by a twin-track intake system coming in from both side vents that have increased horsepower by up to 5 HP over the previous generation Boxster.
Serving the twin intakes are two K&N E-0666 oval cone-shaped filters, designed to basically eliminate particulate intake while ensuring smoother breathing and extending the life of this driver's sports car. In K&N's in-house filtration testing lab, following ISO5011 testing protocol, the E-0666 was found to have an overall air filtration efficiency rating of 99.26%. Plus reviewers who use K&N filters in their other cars and trucks said they "...seem to have helped acceleration". While specifically designed to fit the 2013-2016 Porsche Boxster, Cayman, or Macan OE air filter box, installation instructions for this filter are a bit more detailed, as perhaps can be expected for a finely designed Porsche powerplant. The new K&N filter will fit only one way on the Porsche air box and existing screws from the stock filter(s) will not be used. You need to use the two new screws provided and re-install the base into the housing per the car's service manual. The instructions must be followed every time the filter is serviced to ensure it seals properly. Servicing these filters is made simple with a K&N Recharger Air Filter Care Service Kit and supported by a 10-year/million-mile limited warranty. The oiled cotton gauze medium can catch millions of particles and after about 50,000 miles (depending on driving conditions), should be cleaned completely and re-used. They will reduce maintenance costs, eliminate the waste involved with disposing of paper filters and will most likely be the last filters you'll need to buy for your Boxster. K&N Part E-0666 will replace this OEM part: The following Porsche models can accept a K&N E-0666 Replacement Air Filter: Please use K&N's Search by Vehicle tool to find a K&N replacement air filter, or K&N air intake system, and then visit an authorized K&N dealer to make your purchase. The K&N Dealer Search can direct you to K&N dealer in just about any corner of the world.
