At Friday’s practice session the K&N Filters No. 6 was a top contender as Kvapil clocked several top-10 lap times. In his final qualifying effort of the season, Kvapil piloted the K&N Ford around the 1.5 mile oval in 31.585 seconds. This put him in 10th place for the start of Friday night’s race.

By lap 11, Kvapil was in 6th place. The first of four cautions flew on lap 21 when the No.03 spun and Kvapil radioed to the pit crew that the K&N truck needed more grip. K&N team crew chief Mike Beam made plans for a wedge and air pressure adjustment on the following pit stop. Kvapil resumed the race under green flag conditions on lap 19 in sixth.

Kvapil moved as high as fourth place but settled into fifth when the first round of pit stops began on lap 54. Kvapil had a strong truck, but the F-150 was aero sensitive and it was difficult for him to move through traffic. On lap 58, Kvapil hit pit road for four tires, fuel and air pressure adjustment. Things did not go as planned and Kvapil returned to the track in 26th.

On lap 74 Mike Skinner lost a left rear wheel and was taken out of the championship hunt. The caution also took Kvapil out of the hunt for a win because it trapped him and several others. This left only 11 trucks on the lead lap.

The field went back to green flag conditions but Kvapil could only get to 20th before the final caution fell on lap 132. To avoid a wreck Kvapil slowed up and dropped back to 22nd. He was able to gain one spot and finished 21st.

“It took everything we could do get back to the front,” said Kvapil. “It’s a good track and we were running in the top-five early there and got a lap down on pit road. That’s part of racing. But you hate it when slower trucks benefit from it. It also cost us a couple of spots in the points.”

Kvapil dropped three points in the overall points standings to finish out the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season in sixth place. He led a total of 847 laps in the season and was a contender every week for 25 weeks. In 2008, Kvapil will race into the Sprint Cup Series behind the wheel of a Doug Yates Ford.

The Roush Fenway Racer caught a lucky break when the third caution of the event flew at lap75.
“Homestead is a really great track,” said Kvapil. “They reconfigured it a few years back. It’s a special place to me because I clinched the truck series championship back in 2003. You can run three and four wide, there’s so much room to move around. It’s probably one of the best tracks as far as putting on a show for the fans.”

In 24 starts this season, Kvapil has four wins at Michigan, Memphis, Nashville and Las Vegas. He also has eight top-five and 12 top-ten finishes.

“We’ve really had a tough end of the season,” said crew chief Mike Beam. “This is our last race with Travis and we’d like to end our relationship on a positive note. It would be great to win this time around.”

K&N Engineering has designed a performance air intake system (69-0500TWR) in wrinkle red for the Alfa Romeo 147 1.6 liter engine. See applications list below.

"The two piece kit is a cold air intake which can be used in either the long or short version," said K&N Filters Product Development Technician Patrick Jacobs. "The 147 is popular in the southern parts of Europe where the weather is a bit better than the rest of Europe. In bad weather the K&N air intake system can be converted into a short ram. When it is set up in the complete cold air intake mode the air filter (RU-4950) is protected from road water with the K&N air filter wrap."

The large conical K&N air filter is positioned away from the engine and designed to provide increased surface area and dust capacity. K&N Engineering's air intake design has lower restriction than the factory air box system resulting in additional power while providing excellent air filtration.

The free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube is engineered to the specific vehicle design. The 69-0500TWR is designed to add engine performance and is easy to install, usually in 90 minutes or less. K&N high flow air intake systems come with the famous K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty.

The 69-0500TWR will fit the following vehicles:

Motorcycle safety was the theme of the day. “It is one of the hottest issues right now in the Marine Corps,” said Master Sergeant Brian Richardson. “We wanted to educate the troops, entertain them and have experts available from places like K&N Filters who can talk to them about products.”

K&N had a booth open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. to promote its products and give support to the troops. “Most of the Marines who were there knew all about K&N filters and air intake systems,” said Lisa Watson, of K&N Engineering. “They came in waves to our booth all day long. Most already have K&N products on their vehicles. The few that didn’t have K&N were told by their buddy’s it’s the first vehicle upgrade they should get because of the additional horsepower and filtration.”

SPEED-TV and motorcycle stunt riders joined the enthusiasts for the day. The road to Victory Field was shut down so the crowd could watch the show. Several grandstands were filled to see stunt bike riders in action and to pass on a message to wear safety gear while riding. The event will be televised on the Super Bikes show sometime in 2008.

Richardson rides a Screaming Eagle Harley Davidson, drives a Ford F-350 Super Duty and a 1985 Ford Mustang GT. “All my vehicles are equipped with K&N products,” he said. “I live out here in the desert and K&N protects all my engines from the sand and dust.”

The event was very successful, said Richardson. "We met our goal to make this safety stand down interesting, fun and informative," he said. "Next year it will expand and become an annual event."

Super Stock racer Dan Fletcher also won his 50th NHRA national event at Pomona. This was his third NHRA National Event win in a row. He won at Richmond, Virginia and Las Vegas, Nevada prior to Pomona.

Fletcher won the war in Super Stock at Pomona driving his Chevrolet Camaro, beating Michael Iacono in the final round. Fletcher now has 32 wins in Super Stock, sixteen wins in Stock and a pair in Super Gas using K&N Engineering products. He uses K&N oil filter (HP-3002) on his Camaro. “The nut on the bottom of K&N Oil Filters is an ingenious invention,” said Fletcher. “They are very easy to change. Thanks to K&N oil filters my engines have outlasted, outperformed, and stayed clean.”

“Dan’s total number of wins in both Super Stock and Stock are the best in the history of the sport,” said K&N Engineering’s Bob Harris. “It’s a very exclusive club. It’s difficult to win one national event your whole racing career let alone fifty. I’ve been racing since 1989 and have been lucky enough to win four. I’ve raced with guys for 30 years who have never won a NHRA event.” There are only a dozen drivers who have won fifty or more races.

Shawn Langdon won the Super Comp championship in 2007. Langdon uses K&N Engineering products and beat Gary Stinnett in the final round at Pomona. Langdon also drove in the Top Dragster and Lucas Oil alcohol dragster classes over the 2007 season.

Fletcher and Langdon will be back in January for the NHRA Winternationals.
