Jonathan Allard in the K&N Filters No. 0 is Points Leader in Golden State Challenge

K&N Engineering sponsored Sprint Car racer Jonathan Allard won his third overall main event of the 2008 season at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.

During the Golden State Challenge Series event the former track champion took the lead on the 16th lap in the main and never looked back. The track surface was very fast and sticky, but Allard was up to the challenge and made a lot of passes to put the K&N Filters No. 0 into the runner-up spot after about ten laps.

“I battled with leader Destiney Hays through traffic,” said Allard. “The fans were on the edge of their seats as we ran inches apart while navigating through the slower cars. I finally got the momentum I needed and put the car on the top shelf in turn one and drove by Destiney off the second corner.” Allard took the win on Friday night.

On Saturday, some rough spots on the track created one of the longest main events of the season. Allard started the main and settled into third behind Tyler Walker and Tim Kaeding. The three stayed near the front until the action heated up on the 13th lap. Allard waited patiently until Kaeding took the lead on the 17th lap and moved up to second place. A red flag stopped the action, and everything changed when the race started again.

Brad Bumgarner lost his brakes and tagged Allard in the rear on the restart. Allard spun sideways and fell back to the rear of the field. He regrouped and picked up a few spots and finished at seventh. Bumgarner apologized for the contact.

“It was one of those things,” said Allard. “I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We only have two weekends to go before the King of California is crowned and we’re concentrating on that.”

Allard uses K&N Engineering products. “K&N has the best air and oil filters on the market,” he said. “We’ve had many racers come to us and discuss the problems they are experiencing with other brands of racing filters that blow the sealing ring. We tell them about K&N, they switch and do not have any more failures. With our K&N air box the maintenance is effortless. Take one look at the champions around the race track and you will see why champions choose K&N.”

Allard is the points leader as the Golden State Challenge Series winds down with just two weeks remaining in the season.

Corvette Racing's C6.Rs Ready for American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix

The American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix in Lakeville, Connecticut will be full of unknowns for Team Chevy’s Corvette Racing. Drivers and team members have decades of experience at Lime Rock Park but this year it will be different. There are new corners and a freshly paved surface that make the rural track unfamiliar.

“The biggest challenge is that we have very limited data on the new Lime Rock track layout,” said Ken Flory, chief engineer for the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R. “While we have maps of the new sections, they don’t show the elevations, banking and specific details of the track. With new paving on the entire track, the grip level is a mystery as well.”

The length of the track is 1.51 miles and even though it has lost a few yards of pavement, the corner count has increased from eight to 10. However, Chevrolet’s factory road racing team has the technical resources to help with the race.

“The development of Corvette Racing’s championship-winning racing engines presented a very challenging configuration for the air filter system,” said Dough Fehan, Corvette Racing Program Manager. “K&N Engineering met that challenge not only from the filtration perspective but from the performance perspective as well.”

Drivers Johnny O’Connell and Jan Magnussen will have a pair of one-hour practice sessions before GT1 qualifying begins. “We plan to use maximum instrumentation on the cars to gather as much information as we can in the first practice session,” said Flory. “We will take different directions to evaluation various options for the race.”

The American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix marks Corvette Racing’s return to ALMS competition after finishing second and third in the GT1 class during the 24 Hours of Le Mans. “With Aston Martin returning to GT1 competition in Lime Rock, we have manufacturers and team championships that we want to win again,” said Fehan. “The drivers of the No. 3 and No. 4 Corvettes both want to win the Drivers Championship and that will be a season-long intramural battle for the fans to enjoy.

SPEED-TV will air the race tape-delayed on Sunday, July 13 from noon until 3pm EST.
