The new Jefferies Racing No. 22 Trophy Truck made its debut at the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge. It placed 10th in qualifying and as a result, started in the fifth row. Jefferies truck ran most of the first day trouble free. “We lost second gear towards the end of the race on Saturday,” said Jefferies. “I could only shift from first to third. That left us down on power and made the tight turns in the infield hard to maneuver. The next day we battled additional transmission problems, but managed end with a respectable 8th place finish.”

The K&N Trophy Truck uses a K&N designed air induction system and a K&N performance oil filter. This provides Jefferies with the power and protection he requires for racing. “The K&N filters continue to attest that they can withstand any environment,” he said. “The desert is hard on our motors and K&N filters protect them time and time again.”

Next on the agenda for Jefferies was the Best in the Desert Parker 425. He raced there as a substitute driver in the 1500 class. The 1500 class is the same as class 1 in the SCORE Series. Jefferies also was able to race one of the class 1 cars he built. As a result he was very comfortable with the car. He piloted the vehicle from the 49th starting position to a 4th place finish.

The next SCORE race for the Jefferies Racing No. 22 Trophy Truck is the 23rd annual San Felipe 250 on March 13-15. Jefferies drew a first place starting position, and the team is very excited. “We have put in a couple hundred miles of testing since Laughlin,” said Jefferies. “Our truck is ready for San Felipe.”

In the meantime the Jefferies Racing Team is headed for the King of the Hammers Extreme Desert Race and Rock Crawl at the Means Dry Lake area in the California Desert. He will compete against other K&N sponsored racers at the second annual event.

NHRA Champions Join USO Tour for American Soldiers in Kuwait and Germany

From the heart and soul of the American racetrack to the heart and soul of the American soldiers in Germany and Kuwait, there is goodwill. The goodwill comes from a USO sponsored tour with representatives of the National Hot Rod Association and K&N sponsored racers. The NHRA drivers spent a lot of time in the hospital rooms of injured American soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

NHRA Pro Stock Champions Warren Johnson and Jason Line were among the group. “I was impressed by the commitment level of the men and women of the Armed Services,” said Warren Johnson. “We visited the wounded and were aware of the high price they paid. They arrived from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan with burns from IED blasts and gunshot wounds, and they all wanted to go back out to be with their buddies in the field no matter how injured they were.”

Johnson signed hero cards and answered questions about racing. “It was a privilege to be out there,” he said. “I hope to go back again.” Line agreed with Johnson. “It breaks your heart to see some of the injured soldiers but makes you appreciate your freedoms. We’re lucky to have people who are willing and proud to pay the price.”

“The contributions made by K&N were a major factor in the overall success of the trip,” said Wayne Reed, Program Coordinator. “Troops were amazed that the shirts and hats they received were free and they were grateful. They were also appreciative of the time that the NHRA drivers took to visit them. It makes you proud to be an American to be able to lift the spirits of the brave men and women who are thousands of miles away from home.”

The group also traveled to Camp Arifjan, which is about 30 miles from Kuwait City. Camp Arifjan provides permanent support facilities for American forces in Kuwait. Johnson, Line and the other NHRA drivers took part in a meet-and-greet session at the recreation center and talked to more than 300 Army, Marines and Navy soldiers. From there they travelled to Camp Patriot, Kuwait Naval Base.

The U.S. Soldiers 40 miles from the Iraqi border were not forgotten. The NHRA group spent time at Ali Al Salem Air Base, which is also nicknamed “The Rock.” Line is a former soldier and said he can relate to the troops. “I was in the Persian Gulf War and I know what it’s like to be so far from home,” he said. “I was honored to go on this trip and give them a small piece of America.”

By coincidence, Line met with solider Rick Friday in Germany. Friday and Line served together and the two friends had not seen each other in 18 years. “This defines how small the world is,” said Line. “To travel overseas and basically run into someone who I had served with in what seems like eons ago, was one of a number of highlights of a great experience.”

The Army Special Forces Association, Randall Shughart Chapter 64, based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania served as the vanguard for the group’s visit. The 435th Services Squadron at Ramstein Air Base hosted the group during the stay.

This was the fourth annual USO-Sponsored trip and Reed said it was an unparalleled success. The group plans to be back.

Three K&N sponsored Sportsman racers picked up big wins at the Lucas Oil Slick Mist NHRA Nationals in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dan Fletcher won in Competition Eliminator, Mike Ferderer won in Super Gas and Tom Bayer won in Super Comp at Firebird International Raceway. “For two years in a row K&N has had great success at Phoenix,” said Steve Williams, K&N Vice President of Research and Development. “What a great start to the 2009 season for all our K&N drivers.”

Fletcher made his 58th NHRA National win at Phoenix and currently ranks No. 8 on the all time winning list. Fletcher drove Rick Braun’s 2008 Chevy Cobalt to his fourth straight Competition Eliminator Title at NHRA national events, something no one else has accomplished. “Thanks to K&N oil filters my engines have outlasted and outperformed,” said Fletcher. “K&N helps me win.”

Rick Braun is the owner of the cobalt and co-owner of R&B Auto Center in Fontana, California. “I don’t see how things could have worked out any better for us, Dan hasn’t stopped winning, and we’re in awe of his success,” he said. “I’ve been in the automotive industry for 25 years and I know cars. Competition Eliminator motors are high reviving, but thanks to K&N our bearings still look brand new after 40-50 runs.”

Thomas Bayer was trying to double up in Super Comp and Super Gas in Phoenix. “I was busted by Mike Ferderer in Super Gas,” said Bayer. “My air line on the throttle stop broke from the fitting and I didn’t have time to fix it. I could not give him any real competition. I like to think I would have beat Ferderer, but he’s tough and has been doing this for a long time. He’s one bad hombre. It would have been nice to give him a run for the money.” “Talk is cheap,” joked Mike Ferderer. “I think Tom broke his car on purpose so he’d have an excuse not to race me.”

Bayer was really excited to win in Super Comp. “It is a big deal to win a Lucas Oil National Event,” he said. “With my Lucas Oil and K&N products I can go round after round. K&N filters keep the debris from going into my motor. Along with my Toyo tires and B&M Racing Converters there were no flaws in the Super Comp race at Phoenix.”

Bayer said it’s hard to win a national event because it’s hard to outrace the teams who use the latest technology. “I had to be a little bit better than the guy in the next lane to move forward,” he said. “My Lucas Oil K&N Super Comp dragster outperformed everyone else in Super Comp.”

K&N sponsored driver Mike Ferderer beat Ryan Herem in the Super Gas final at Phoenix. He is currently tied with Sheldon Gecker, aka King Kong with the most national event wins in Super Gas. Ferderer drove the K&N Filters Pontiac Grand Am with a K&N hood scoop. “I get some of my best speeds on the track because of my K&N hood scoop,” he said. “K&N helps me get to the Winner’s Circle.”

Team Waggoner Racing has competed in 17 Extreme Rock Crawling Championship Series and ranks 5th nationally. They are also the 2008 2nd place champions in the WE ROCK USA West Coast Series.

In rock crawling, officials set courses in rocky terrain with cones. Drivers must stay between the cones and get from start to finish in a set amount of time with minimum penalty points. If boundaries are broken or if the drivers hit cones they receive penalties. There are additional penalties for backing up, using rear steer or a winch to aid in progress. The winner is the driver who completes the two-day competition with the least amount of points.

Each driver is allowed a spotter to help them maneuver through the courses. They communicate with wireless headset radios, hand signals and the old fashioned way of yelling. The spotter suggests the best route to make it through the difficult terrain in the given amount of time.

Cody’s father Jim is the spotter and Cody is the driver. The Waggoner Team also consists of Lindsay Waggoner, Cody’s wife and Charley, the couple’s three year old daughter.

Team Waggoner Racing will compete once again, with K&N products “My K&N air filters are amazing,” said Cody Waggoner. “I run a total of four K&N filters. After two days of intense dust and dirt during competitions, K&N keeps the dirt out and I still have the horsepower I need."

Team Waggoner has 20 first place wins and five first place series titles. They also have 15 second place event wins and nine second place series titles.
