Off-Road Competitors Venture Out of Rockcrawling Zone for Hill Climb Race

The Colorado Hill Climb Association (CHCA) has a new rock racer class. It is perfect for competitors who take their rigs to crawl and race on rocks. Rockcrawling brothers Brad and Roger Lovell tried it out because they said it was a heck of a ride at the Canyon City, Colorado event.

“Our overbuilt tanks were surprisingly competitive with the dedicated hill climb cars,” said Brad Lovell. “It was our first hill climb and we had no idea what to expect. When we arrived we saw everything from Rally cars to methanol burning open wheel monsters. We saw plastic wheels, aluminum chassis and 800 horsepower go-kart sized racers and our Ford Ranger stuck out like a sore thumb.”

The Rock Racer class went first on day one and Brad Lovell was first out. “My plan was to be cautious on the first run and go for broke on the second,” said Lovell. “I slowed for the turns that caused me trouble and kept my hands steady on the wheel.”

Lovell learned fast that it is important in a hill climb to be smooth with the steering wheel. “I flung the No. 232 Torchmate Ranger with K&N products all over the road,” he said. “I was concerned about the loose gravel and drop offs as we scrambled to the top.”

The second run was much better for the brothers because they started to figure out the hairpin turns. Lovell set the low time for his class of 3.39. “I felt pretty good about that,” he said. “I pushed harder in the final run and lost it in a hairpin.”

Race day consisted of two timed runs, and the best time became the official time. “What a ride,” he said. “Our fastest time was 3.38 and we took the lead in the class. I did not want to be dethroned and I stayed in the throttle and pushed turns that made the hair on the back of my neck rise.”

Lovell hit 94 mph, stepped on the brakes and slid around the first turn. “I could feel my tires grab and I could feel the lateral G-forces develop,” he said. “As I reached the top, I knew I had a good time and a good run.” Rival JT Taylor bettered Lovell’s time by 6/10ths of a second.

“It was so dusty and dirty on the mountain and there was loose gravel everywhere,” said Lovell. “We never have to worry about our K&N air filters. K&N Keeps the debris out of our engines and prevents our sensors from clogging up.”

Next up for Brad and Roger Lovell will be the 2nd Annual ROC Race on Memorial Day Weekend.

Crump was on a mission from the outset of the race. He did everything he could to stay in the hunt for first place, and grappled with Sweden's Fredrik Lindgren in Heat 5. Crump then passed Poland's Grzegorz Walasek and Tomasz Gollob to win Heat 9.

American Greg Hancock and Gollob tore away in the first semi-final but they had to answer to Crump who stormed on to victory. He was also too fast for Tomasz Gollob, Andreas Jonsson and Greg Hancock in the final. Crump led from start to finish claiming the 19th Grand Prix victory of his career.

“This is a great win for me and a great win for my team,” said Crump. “I’m happy to have the points lead after just two rounds. It’s still early and there is still a long way to go in the championship chase. Anything can happen.”

Speedway motorcycles have no brakes and are powered by 500cc single cylinder engines. Riders make a clutch start. Unless it's an emergency situation riders slow to a stop by easing off the throttle. If a rider needs to stop in an emergency he will pull a cut-out cord, which is attached to his wrist to kill the engine.

Crump has used K&N products doing his nearly two decades of racing. He uses K&N air filter RU-3710 on all of his motorcycles. “K&N is the best,” he said. “The air filters give me the additional horsepower I need to win at every race. K&N also keeps the dirt and debris out of my engines.”

Crump said he is concentrating on consistency and getting to the finals at each event. “If I can do that, then I’m in with a hot chance to win a third World Grand Prix title this year,” he said. “Right now my only concern is to win the next Grand Prix in Sweden”

Round three of the Speedway Grand Prix World Championship takes place at Gothenberg in Sweden on May 30. It is a SuperPrix with double prize money on the line for the winner.

Boni had an eighth place result which matched his career high record. Adams took seventeenth.

“Both riders had impressive race results despite weather problems that cancelled the second set of practices,” said Jill Lengyel of Rockstar Energy Hart and Huntington. “During qualifying Boni scored fourth in heat two and Adams got seventh which put them in the main event.”

Boni is now in the lead for the pro privateer challenge that is awarded to the top non factory rider in the AMA series. Boni is 11th overall in points in the AMA Supercross Series and Adams is 22nd.

“We’re happy that our guys are riding great right now,” said Team Manager Kenny Watson. “We set out to prove that we’re here to mix it up with the top teams and I think we’ve done that.”

Rockstar Hart & Huntington are running prototype designs of K&N’s XStream Series Air filters for their 2009 Honda CRF450s. K&N provides Hart & Huntington optimum air flow for additional horsepower on the track.

Rock Crawlers Drop a Landmine at We-Rock Round Two in Cedar City, Utah

We Rock racers Brad and Roger Lovell were ready to set a benchmark at Round two of the competition in Cedar City, Utah.

The Lovell brothers were the only Pro-Modified team to finish all the courses on the first day for a 24 point lead. The second day was intense because a radio problem caused their No. 232 Ranger to hit a couple of cones on the first run. The cone penalty cost the Lovell brothers their huge lead.

On the next day, they were determined to regain the lead. They hit the courses just right and remained upright and between the cones. “I knew it was going to be tight,” said Brad Lovell. “I was really worked up about the additional points we could make if we conquered a bonus climb no one had finished. I was asking anyone and everyone if we should try it. We did and that is the only reason we had the lead again. It was a good gamble.”

The lead was so good that Brad and Roger Lovell took home their second We-Rock win of the season and a strong lead in the 2009 series. The Lovell brothers use K&N products. “There is a lot of debris on the We-Rock courses,” said Lovell. “Our K&N air filters keep the silt and fine dust out of our engines. K&N also prevents our sensors from clogging.”

Brad and Roger Lovell are preparing to race the legendary Baja 500 in June.
