To say the 25th annual K&N Horsepower Challenge worked out for Jeg Coughlin Jr. would be an understatement. He beat the best drivers in Pro Stock and collected the $50,000 top prize, a trophy and a ring. In the final, he bested longtime rival Greg Anderson. Coughlin reacted first in the Jegs.com Chevy, .020 to .062, but the race was over when Anderson let the clutch go on his Summit Pontiac and shook the tires early.

In the K&N Horsepower Challenge, the top eight Pro Stock drivers who accumulated the most points while qualifying during the 23 race NHRA series faced off at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series in Norwalk, Ohio.

At the start of the event, Greg Anderson led the pack with points, Mike Edwards was second, followed by Allen Johnson, Jason Line, Kurt Johnson, Jeg Coughlin, Warren Johnson and Ron Krisher.

“In the K&N Horsepower Challenge, every round is like racing in the final,” said Coughlin. “The fans at the Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park were rewarded with outstanding competition.”

Coughlin went up against defending champion Allen Johnson in the first round, then Mike Edwards in the second round and then Anderson in the final. “We got the breaks when we needed them,” said Coughlin. “We fishtailed down the track in the second round and I can’t believe we were able to hold on. It was a combination of running good and getting the breaks when we needed them.”

“This was my third win in the K&N Horsepower Challenge,” said Coughlin, who claimed the Horsepower Challenge trophy in 1999 and 2000. “I’m currently leading in the Full Throttle standing and entering the final phase of my regular season.”

Anderson earned $10,000 for his runner-up finish. Edwards and Line earned $3,000 each for making the semifinals and first round finishers Allen Johnson, Kurt Johnson, Warren Johnson and Ron Krisher received $2,500 each.

“I wish I could have earned the $50,000 pot of gold,” said Anderson. “But I’m happy with the $10,000. I love that race. Thanks to K&N, the company put up some big money and it means a lot.”

The Pro Stock class is about the delivery of air flow. K&N is in a class of its own when it comes to hood scoops. “K&N has worked hard to create new technology for the NHRA Pro Stock category,” said K&N Vice President of Research and Development Steve Williams. “We have a K&N Pro Stock Intake System available for the world’s fastest hot rods and we put up the money at the K&N Horsepower Challenge.”

“We transitioned to the K&N Pro Stock Intake System in April of this year,” said Coughlin. “Since then we’ve been in 8 NHRA final rounds and I’ve won six of them. We’ve seen a direct relationship between the K&N Pro Stock Intake System and increased power.”

At first glance calling the 2007 Mini Cooper "All New" may seem like a ruse. Upon closer inspection the surprisingly significant changes make themselves better known. While European pedestrian impact standards dictated minor changes to exterior dimensions, the biggest surprise comes from under the hood. A lot of investment was made into new engines for the Mini Cooper. An all-new turbocharged 1.6-liter engine powers the Cooper S. The new turbocharged engine offers a nice bump in both horsepower and torque over the previous generation Cooper S. Nevertheless, K&N engineers took one look at the car and decided that more could be done.

That's exactly what K&N did with Performance Air Intake System 69-2004TTK. Great consideration was put into the design of part number 69-2004TTK. Exclusive features include a stepped intake tube to eliminate the need for special adapters while improving air delivery. The location of the step was carefully tuned to provide greater increases in power. Additionally, a special angled silicone adapter was created to maintain the factory location of the stock crankcase vent hose. 69-2004TTK incorporates a highly unique heat shield that bolts to the bottom half of the factory air box. This retains the original cold air induction keeping inlet air temperature within factory specifications. The result of this hard work and dedication is an extra 11 horsepower at the wheels for the 2007, 2008, 2009 to 2010 Mini Cooper S.

K&N's Research and Development Department tested a 2008 Mini Cooper S 1.6L I4 on our in-house dynamometer. Results showed an astonishing peak horsepower gain of 11.1 horsepower @ 4700 RPM! 69-2004TTK provides increased performance and an attractive black powder coated aluminum intake tube.

K&N cold air intakes are designed to dramatically reduce intake restriction as they smooth and straighten airflow. This allows your engine to pull in air with ease compared to the OEM air filter assembly. More air means more power and torque when you need it. With a K&N Performance Air Intake System, consumers can count on extra horsepower whether daring the morning commute, or weaving along a winding country road.

This air intake system uses a conical shaped high-flow air filter (RU-4960) and powder coated aluminum heat shield in place of the vehicle's stock air box. The result is an air filter that captures harmful particles, flows more air, and increases service life. This K&N air filter performs for up to 100,000 miles before service is required depending on driving conditions. Improving the air path between the filter and the engine is the powder coated aluminum intake tube. Our powder coated aluminum intake tubes offer power and a stylish appearance. The 69-2004TTKair intake takes about 90 minutes or less to install, using stock mounting points. It requires no cutting or drilling and it is covered by K&N's Million Mile Limited Warranty.

For increased protection and style, K&N offers a Drycharger® filter wrap that can be used in conjunction with part number 69-2004TTK. Drychargers® are made from a durable polyester material containing uniform micron openings which will stop small dirt particles and repel water; yet add little restriction to the airflow of your filter. Available in a variety of colors, K&N Drychargers® can be color coordinated with your car's finish.

Kathryne Minter competes full-throttle in the ASCS Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series

A quick glance at the beautiful Kathryne Minter and it would be hard to tell that she is a talented and competitive driver of the 2009 ASCS Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series. This 18-year-old racer's weapon of choice is the # 13 Maxim chassis powered by WESMAR Racing Engines, which is equipped at all times with a K&N Sprint Car Style Air Box.

"I definitely notice that by combining K&N filters with Purple Oil, I see a difference in the longevity of my motor," says Kathryne. "I don't have to worry if I'm gonna be able to make it through the next race. I may not have the biggest motor, but because it's so much cleaner and healthier, it runs a lot better than some of my competitors' motors who are not using K&N filters."

Kathryne's racing career may have begun only four years ago, but the 2006 graduate of the Lyn St. James Driver Development Program has won more than 60 feature races. In 2007 Kathryne finished 8th in points for the ASCS Gulf South Region, and also received 'Rookie of the Year' honors.

During the 2008 season, she ran the ASCoT National Series Tour and finished 11th in points. Kathryne was awarded with perfect attendance and also accepted the 'Young Lion Award' for being the youngest driver to complete the tour.

When on the track, Kathryne doesn't think twice about being a female racer in a male-dominated sport. "We are all the same when you get on the race track," she says. "I'm just another car, another number."

However, there is no question that Kathryne gets a lot of attention off-track. "I try to set a good example at all times and maintain a good attitude, especially because I have a lot of younger fans," she says. "I am very lucky to have fans that support me no matter how I finish."

This dedicated racer recently graduated high school, which was not an easy task considering her busy schedule. Kathryne studied an intense curriculum by taking classes online, all so she could attend every race on the national tour. Once a ballerina and soccer player, Kathryne gave up both activities to devote all her time to racing. "Racing had everything I was looking for; the physical aspect, the adrenaline rush, the competition - I didn't want to do anything else!"

Next up on the schedule for Kathryne Minter Racing, the team heads to the ASCS National Tour race at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Arkansas.

Monster Truck Action Takes a Break to Help Kids With Cancer

Black Stallion, Iron Warrior, Screamin’ Demon and Black Jack Monster Trucks took time off from competition for a benefit car show in Hagerston, Maryland. Proceeds from the show went to Katie Stains and Josh Forsythe, two area teens with bone cancer.

“Josh was not able to attend,” said Black Stallion’s Michael Vaters. “He was in the hospital at the time. We were able to meet Katie. She is a lovely young lady and we were moved by her strength.” The benefit raised more than $11,000 for the care of the two teens.

The benefit was a important break in the Monster Spectacular tour for Vaters. After it was over the Black Stallion owner and driver flew back to Canada where he faced off against the reigning Monster Champion Jim Koehler in Avenger at the Scotia Bank Place in Ottawa. The other competing drivers were Trey Myers in the Iron Warrior, Steve Koehler in Brutus and Steve Hearley in Godzilla.

Vaters took the wheelie competition in the K&N Ford powered Black Stallion. Iron Warrior beat Avenger in the first round of racing, but lost to Godzilla in the next round.

The next stop on the Monster Spectacular tour was the City of Trois Rivieres in Quebec, Canada. “It was an outdoor event which meant plenty of room to open up the monster trucks,” said Vaters. “The crew put a fresh transmission in the K&N Ford powered Black Stallion and I put it to the ultimate test. I made multiple passes over the car stack and two van stacks in the wheelie competition and won the event.” Vaters also took the freestyle win.

Vaters uses K&N air and oil filters on his Monster trucks. "Over my many years in this business I've used a lot of products, but K&N is the only product that can handle the dirty and dusty environment during Monster Jam competitions," said Vaters. "We are known for our wild and crazy driving and the ability to push our engines to the limit. We are hard on our motors and K&N gives us the protection we need for Monster Jam competition."

In the grand finale, Vaters piloted a Kamikaze jet powered 4-wheeler with a 30,000 rpm jet engine. Vaters blasted the jet into the van and burned it to ashes. This was the way Monster Spectacular closed out its final show.

The Black Stallion team is back in the United States and will do another benefit for the American Cancer Society on June 26 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
