Chris Lara is a true visionary when it comes to his 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5.3 liter V8 engine. His passion has continued to grow from the moment he began the trucks first major modification. "I added some 22's a year after I bought the truck," said Lara, "But in July, 2005, I added the hydraulic suspension system. I got a lot of compliments after that."

In October, 2008, he sent the truck back to the shop for custom paint. Soon after, Chris Lara joined with the L.A. Chapter Nokturnal Car Club. After his first meeting in December, he knew he had to make a lot of changes. "Larger rims, bigger system, major changes," he said, "I upgraded the rims to 26", built a better system, added more TV's and installed custom interior."

Chris Lara has been using K&N performance products for 4 years. "I like the way the intake performs and that my truck can breathe easily," Lara said. "I also like the added power. I personally went with the K&N 77 series intake because I like the looks of the polished aluminum finish." Lara's 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L is equipped with K&N air intake system 77-3021KP and K&N wrench-off oil filter HP-1007.

This custom 2003 Sierra 1500 has made its way to a number of car shows including the Toys R Us Car and Truck Show, Oldies Car Show, Lowrider Nationals, Ludikrs Car Show, Majestic Car Show, Lo Low's Low Rider Car Show and Victory Outreach Car Show. Chris Lara has taken home three 2nd place trophies so far this year.

Lara's vision for his truck has not reached the end. "My truck is going back to the shop," he said. "I am going to fiberglass the door panels, relocate the components in the panels to fit a 20 inch TV on each side, add a custom speaker box, fiberglass the rest of the bed to integrate two more 20 inch TV's and a floating amp rack down the middle."

Modifications for Chris Lara's 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 with a 5.3 liter V8 engine are as follows:

Engine - K&N 77 Series Intake (77-3021KP), K&N Oil Filter (HP-1007), Hypertech Power Programmer, and Gears are changed to a 4.10 gear ratio for more torque.

Exterior - Paint is a two-tone BMW Atlantic Blue and Black with a Silver Marble separation both colors. Body is shaved the taillights and tailgate added a roll pan to flush the back and added 2 10'' LED Brake lights to light up the back. Rims are 26'' Driv Sessna with Nitto Tires 305-35R26.

Interior - Backyard Interiors re-worked the interior and added Black Leather, Black Ostrich and Black Sting Ray with Blue Suede inserts to bring out the color and Blue Suede headliner with a line of stingray down the middle. Suspension - Full Hydraulic system from ProHopper Hydraulics with 2 pumps and 4 Optima yellow top batteries with 8'' cylinders in the front and 10'' cylinders in the back.

Audio and Video - Custom Fiberglass center console painted to match the exterior. 3 JL Audio 10" W6v2 subwoofers powered by a JLAudio 1000/1v2 Amplifier, along with 4 sets of Infinity speakers for mids and highs. Pioneer double din Head unit along with 2 TV's in the visors a 12" flip down for the back seat. Two more 10'' TV's integrated in the center console.

First Place Win for Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX at Rally Colorado in Steamboat Springs

The eighth round of the nine-event Rally America National Championship Series took place in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Driver Andrew Comrie-Picard (ACP) drove the 108.37 mile race through 16 stages on Saturday and Sunday and took a decisive win in his NOS Energy Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX with K&N products. “We race in a high dust, high speed environment with a motor built right to the edge of envelope,” said Comrie-Picard. “We can’t let any contaminants get into our engine and that’s why we choose K&N air filters. K&N protects our engine and gives us excellent filtration. K&N has been our choice for more than a decade.”

Rally Colorado was challenging for the competitors. They faced fast high-desert roads around the Yampa Valley where the weather was anything but consistent. Dry, dusty conditions on Day 1 were replaced by driving rain that turned the roads slick with mud on Day 2.

“I love it when it’s a battle,” said Comrie-Picard. “We were fighting tooth and nail with Travis Pastrana early in the rally and that’s really satisfying.”

Just as the weather shifted gears from Day 1 to Day 2, so did the battle between ACP and Pastrana. Subaru Rally Team USA rival Pastrana barreled through a chicane on Day 2 and was penalized. As a result, Comrie-Picard and co-driver Jeremy Wimpey found themselves holding position at the front of the pack for the second half of the rally.

“We would have preferred to have raced hard in a close fight to the end,” said Comrie-Picard. “But to finish a minute and 46 seconds in the lead is an accomplishment to be proud of after more than 100 miles of racing.” Team ACP took eight out 16 stage wins, the most of any team.

The first-place finish moves Comrie-Picard into the top-three in the overall Rally America Series, ahead of Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block. It also extends his lead in the North American Championship. There is only one round remaining in U.S. competition and Comrie-Picard has enough points to at least tie Block for third place in the 2009 season. The points for the top five Rally Drivers are as follows:

Travis Pastrana 129
Andi Mancin 95
Andrew Comrie-Picard 85
Ken Block 66
Tanner Foust 62

“If Rally Colorado was anything to go by, the final round next month is going to be intense,” said Comrie-Picard. “We’re making every round count this season.” Second place went to Polish driver Andi Mancin and co-driver Maciej Wislawski, while Nathan Conley and co-driver Todd Moberly finished in third place overall. It’s the first time that Mitsubishi cars have scored a one-two finish in Rally America history, said Comrie-Picard.

The final race in the 2009 Rally America National Rally Championship Series will be the Lake Superior Rally, October 16-17 in Houghton, Michigan.

It was Williams first win in his new 1963 Super Gas Corvette. “It comes down to having a great race car,” he said. “I tell people all the time my cars would win a lot of races without me.”

Williams worked his way through six rounds, working his way into the final round where he met up with current top-10 driver Val Torres Jr. in another 1963 Corvette. Williams won by 0:0048 seconds or approximately 14 inches at the other end.

“It moved us into the top 20 nationally and also gives us a chance to finish in the top 10 in Super Gas Series points,” said Williams. “I raced Val Torres Junior earlier this year in Super Comp at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was my turn to win at Bakersfield. Overall, it was a good race day.”

Williams has raced and won the past three years at Auto Club Famoso Raceway. In 2007 and 2008 he won there in Super Comp. K&N provides Williams with the opportunity and support equipment for racing. He also manages to balance a corporate work schedule with a race schedule.

K&N is Williams primary sponsor, which allows him to develop products born out of racing for K&N customers. “It is an honor to work for a performance company that believes in its products and supports both professional and semi-professional racing of all kinds,” he said. “What we use on my cars is in a constant state of evolution. K&N has a long history of experience, combined with first-hand knowledge that goes into every product sold.”

Williams next race will be in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Division 6 at Champion Raceway in Medford, Oregon.

The jumps are large and the course is one of the most demanding on the XRRA (Xtreme Off-Road Rock Racing) circuit, but Brad Lovell owned the raod at the legendary RAM Off-Road Park in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Brad Lovell dethroned 2008 champion Shannon Campbell and reclaimed the XRRA National Championship 2009 title for Team Lovell. The effort was a repeat of Roger Lovell’s championship on the same course two years ago.

The brothers were forced to race one another at the RAM Park because of their 4th and 5th (respectively) place finishes in the Western Series. “It created a challenge to compete against each other in Colorado because we usually spot for each other,” said Brad Lovell. “But we took the setback in stride. During the first run I got pretty worked up and was really hard on the truck. I hit the same hole on both laps and was worried I hurt the suspension. I was surprised but everything held.”

Brad Lovell’s times were among the fastest as were Roger Lovell’s. On the more technical course Roger finished only a couple of seconds behind his brother. At the halfway mark, the brothers were sitting in 2nd and 5th place.

During the afternoon runs competitors faced a series of jumps that clear a 15 foot ditch followed by a 20 foot rock staircase. “Timing was crucial,” said Lovell. “The consequences for coming up either long or short were dire.” Roger was forced to work his way around the jumps, but Brad was able to clear all the jumps. “I overshot the staircase and almost went end over end,” said Brad. “I was in the air and kept waiting to land. The truck went nose down and I knew I was in trouble. I was just hoping the truck would hit the ground before it caught the bumper and it did. I hit the ground hard, but the Torchmate Ford lived through it.”

Roger had a worse fate when his wheel lugs sheared off in a rock notch. “I didn’t realize what had happened in the rocks,” he said. “I kept my foot on the gas and got out of the rocks before I knew my hopes of a win were gone.”

The brothers turned Roger’s misfortune into a team advantage. Roger could now act as a spotter and coach for Brad. At the start of the final round, Brad was seated 9 seconds behind leader Rick Dermo and a few seconds ahead of the rest of the field. “There was not much strategy,” said Brad Lovell. “We had three 2nd place finishes this year and came in 2nd at the National Championships last year. We wanted the win. We are usually pretty tactical, but this time it was win or break down.”

With Roger’s coaching, Brad kept a cool head and timed the jumps correctly. The Lovell’s had the lead with only one run left. “I kept thinking, don’t screw it up,” said Brad. “I knew I had a few seconds to burn and concentrated on a clean run. In the end I had a smaller margin than I thought but it was good enough for a win. I’m really proud of our family and our team.”

Brad Lovell will next compete in the Silver State 300 desert race on September 26. From there, Team Lovell will go onto the Baja 1000. “We are fortunate to be involved with some of the best companies out there and K&N is on the list,” said Brad Lovell. “K&N has the best air filter on the market. I put the K&N air filter on and forget about it for the whole season and know it will do its job. There are not a lot of parts I can say that about.”
