Bob Westphal of Wesmar Racing Engines Has History of Building Race Engines That Perform

Bob Westphal, owner of Wesmar Racing Engines, has been fascinated by the inner workings of engines since childhood. "I can't tell you how many times I took apart and rebuilt my parent's lawnmower, my mini-bike, car engines, whatever," says Westphal.

Westphal's first job was in 1968, building engines with Ed Pink Racing Engines in Van Nuys, California. He was promoted to shop foreman in 1970, building top fuel and funny car engines for legendary clientele such as Don Prudhomme, Ed McCulloch, Don Shumacher, Barry Setzer and Tom McEwen. Westphal eventually moved back to his home state of Nebraska, where he built short and long blocks for Raymond Beadle, driver of the Blue Max funny cars. "While the funny car drivers were out on the road, I would be building fresh replacements for their worn out engines," says Westphal. Along the way, Beadle's drivers won a couple of NHRA World Championships. Westphal was then tapped to build sprint car engines for Beadle's World of Outlaws team with driver Sammy Swindell.

In 1986, Westphal put all his experience to use and Wesmar Racing Engines was born. Partnering up with Steve Carbone, another top fuel engine builder at Pink's, the two set up shop in Bixby, Oklahoma and began building 360 and 410 cubic inch sprint car engines. He is now joined by his son, Kelly and they have recently ventured into rebuilding 4 cylinder midget engines. "Customers come to us because they know we build fast and reliable sprint car engines and that we use nothing but the best parts money can buy," says Westphal.

Wesmar Racing relies on K&N's reputation as the leader in filtration technology. "We were using a competitor's oil filter until we began having problems and decided that a switch had to be made. Someone in our shop suggested a K&N oil filter. We ordered a few to start out with and now here we are, two years later, and every engine going out the door has a K&N oil filter on it. We haven't had a problem since," says Westphal.

Las Vegas to Reno Best in the Desert Off Road Race Win for K&N Supported Team

Take three days and add in 1,000 off-road miles of the most grueling desert terrain imaginable, throw in some racers in big powerful modified trucks and it adds up to the Best in the Desert Racing Associations (BITD) Vegas to Reno run.

Competitors lined up near Las Vegas, Nevada and did all they could to finish the race near Reno, Nevada despite the natural elements of sand, silt, rocks and intense dust combined with triple digit temperatures.

Macrae Glass and The Glass Chiropractic Racing Team took on the challenge and were very successful. They finished first in Class 8000 and 11th overall in the race also named The Long Way.

“This race is more than a big adventure and a challenge,” said Glass. “It also shows the drivers and the pit crews what we are really made of. Our strategy going into this race was to finish and have fun.”

On Day 1, Glass drove his Ford truck harder than he planned and paid for it with two flat tires. “There’s nothing like popping tires on giant rocks with searing heat on your back,” he said. “I put a big dent in the inside of the wheel and laid my torn tires on a rock like a smashed pumpkin. It worked out though, because that was a wake-up call. I settled down and went back to my original strategy, run a conservative pace and keep the truck in one piece.” At the end of Day 1, Glass was in second place in his class.

Glass drives a full size unlimited Ford pickup with a Dave Whitehead built Ford 351 cubic inch motor that produces around 700 horsepower.

Other modifications include:

King Off-Road Racing Shocks
BFGoodrich 39 inch tires
KMC Wheels
Mogi Transmission
KC HighLights
MasterCraft racing seats and belts
Harshco metal products
K&N air filter part number E-3978XD
K&N air filter wrap part number 25-3760
K&N oil filter part number HP-5001

“I only use the best products on my truck,” said Glass. “I used the same K&N air filter that I used to win the Terrible’s 250 Best in the Desert Race at Primm, Nevada. I did not even need to clean it before the Vegas to Reno race. The K&N oil filter and K&N filter wraps also work great at every race. K&N is reliable and protects our engine while giving us excellent filtration.”

Glass said they passed so many trucks that were broken down on the side of the road. “I told a lot of people they should use K&N filters,” he said. “K&N makes a difference in these types of long distance endurance races.”

On Day 2 of the Vegas to Reno race Glass said he did not have any flat tires and managed to move up to 12th place overall. “Day 3 was really interesting,” he said. “We were in the top 15 with all the factory supported rich guys. They had helicopters with crew chiefs and camera crews. I could tell when a racer was coming up on me because I could hear the helicopter before I heard their truck.”

The Glass Chiropractic Racing Team took the Class 8000 win and 11th overall. “We not only have bragging rights,” said Glass. “But, our prize purse more than covered the cost of the race.”

Glass will next race at the Best in the Desert Silver State 300 in Mesquite, Nevada.
