Pappel Family Racing from Eugene, Oregon Prepares to Race Hard in 2010

Pappel Racing Team has earned 9 Track Championships, 2 Division Six Titles and 1 National Championship.
Pappel Racing Team has earned 9 Track Championships, 2 Division Six Titles and 1 National Championship.
Ron Pappel, patriarch of Pappel Family Racing, says he caught the racing bug while working on cars in high school. Pappel's two children, Jim, 22 and Rochelle, 15 have inherited their father's talents and love of drag racing. "My kids started driving very young. Rochelle started racing a junior dragster at 8 years old and has been the highlight of our team. Jim began driving at 13 years of age in junior dragsters and now drives a Pro Class Vega," says Pappel. In addition to their racing team, Ron and his wife Karen also own and operate a car dealership in their hometown of Eugene, Oregon.
In 2009 Rochelle Papplel finished top three at Champion Raceway and Ron Pappel finished 3rd overall in Super Pro.

Since 2002 the Pappel Racing Team has earned many championships, but this family is not about to rest on its laurels. "During our 2009 season, we finished very well in spite of missing some points races during the season. Rochelle finished top three at Champion Raceway and I finished 3rd overall in Super Pro," says Pappel. "We are looking forward to the 2010 season. Jim will run the Vega in Pro Class at events throughout the year and I will be running the 27 Super Pro/Super Gas Roadster."

Pappel notes that his daughter Rochelle is on track for one of her best years ever, not only on the drag strip, but in school as well. She will be racing her Junior Fast Class car and will also be participating in some high school driving events in a full size car.

"Rochelle has had much success in school sports. In addition to playing varsity volley ball, she is working towards breaking the school record in the intermediate hurdles and high hurdles as well as running the anchor for the 4X relay on the varsity track team," says Pappel. He says that the team's proudest moment came when Rochelle won the 2007 NHRA Western Conference Finals championship in the 12-year-old class at Bandemere Speedway in Denver, Colorado. She was the first female Division Six driver to win a national championship in any junior dragster class. "After winning that event, Rochelle returned to be honored as the Division Six Driver of the Year," says Pappel. Nearly 600 of the top Junior Dragster racers in the country go to Bandemere Speedway once a year to compete for one of eight prestigious Wally Trophys and a National Title.

Sponsored by K&N, Pappel Racing Team has earned 9 Track Championships, 2 Division Six Titles and 1 National Championship. "I believe that having great sponsors like K&N has given our family the opportunity to drive cars equipped with outstanding safety and performance products," says Pappel. "K&N has definitely contributed to the success of our family race team."

K&N has embraced the turbocharged 2.3 liter engine of the Mazda Mazdaspeed3 by designing a performance air intake system (69-6012TS) that unleashes a power gain of up to 24 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The 69-6012TS air intake replaces the factory air box housing with a mandrel-bent aluminum intake tube and a K&N high-flow air filter. The purpose of the custom intake tube is to smooth and straighten air flow as it enters the engine. This cold air intake system has a large K&N high-flow air filter that is washable, reusable and flows more air than the OE air filter while maintaining filtration levels critical to long engine life.

The 69-6012TS cold air intake system for the 2010-2013 Mazda Mazdaspeed3 2.3L comes with a Million Mile Limited Warranty and is guaranteed to increase horsepower. Installation of the 69-6012TS is simple. K&N provides detailed instructions that guide you through the process. A typical install takes less than 90 minutes and only requires common hand tools.

San Bernardino's Orange Show Speedway Reigning Late Model Champion Reterns for 2010

Ryan Daniel enters the 2010 season at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino as the track's reigning late model champion. He won three races and broke the track record in qualifying three times in 2009.

But the 32-year-old driver from Mentone had his share of problems en route to winning the late model championship.

With two races to go, and the championship very much in doubt, Daniel's car had a stuck valve. With less than an hour before qualifying, he drove to the nearby town of Upland for parts to fix the car. He ended finishing third that night and stayed in contention for the late model championship.

It was those types of races, more than the victories and record-setting qualifying efforts, that led to a championship.

Daniel will return to Orange Show Speedway, which opens its late model season March 27, with a repeat championship season in mind. In his three years of racing at Orange Show, he has won the rookie of the year and held the track record in qualifying in the late model division in 2008.

But he knows the road to repeat will be difficult. He and Toni McCray each had three wins in the late model division last year. Eight drivers won at least one race in 2009, although McCray and Daniel were the only drivers with multiple wins.

"It was all the way down to the last race," Daniel said about how his 2009 championship season unfolded. "The competition was great. There was a different winner every time it seems."

Daniel will be racing the same car he had in 2009. It is a Jackson Racing 2009 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, backed by K&N, Lucas Oil, Finish Line Motorsports, Stick Shift Transmissions and Jam Sportswear.

"It's the car I won the championship in last year, so I know it's fast," Daniel said. Daniel said his crew is made up primarily of family members. His uncles and cousins help him set up and work on the car at races.

His dad, Ron Daniel, is a driver in the late model division at Orange Show Speedway. He ran a partial schedule in 2009, nearly winning a couple of them, but his plan is to run the full 2010 late model schedule.

"My dad's been racing for 30 years," Daniel said. "Everyone's really race-oriented. Come the weekends, they're right there by my side."

Even Ryan Daniel's 6-year-old son is taking an interest in racing.

"I'm trying to get him going," Daniel said.

As for Ryan Daniel, he started racing late models when he was 28. Even though his dad has raced for the better part of the past three decades, the opportunity for Daniel to start racing didn't surface until a few years ago.

Richard Hooper, a championship driver at Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway in Blythe, gave Daniel his first chance to race a late model at Orange Show Speedway in 2006. Daniel won the rookie of the year, then spent the following year working on a new stock car, foregoing racing to concentrate on putting together what would eventually be a championship car. He returned to racing in 2008 and won the late model championship at Orange Show Speedway in 2009.

"It's a pretty bad unit," Daniel said. "It's got good stuff."

Daniel said in addition to racing at Orange Show Speedway, he plans on racing in Blythe and Havasu 95 Speedway. He wants to race in the Richard Hooper memorial race at Blythe. Hooper died of cancer last year.

While Daniel wants to repeat as champion at Orange Show Speedway, his main goal is to finish every race.

"That's the ultimate goal," Daniel said. "I'm running with guys who have been racing 30, 40 years. It feels good to be able to run with those guys."

"Black Hawk Customs started back in 2003. The idea was to jump into the industry for fun, build or customize some bikes, and go after a contract with the Army Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES)," explains James Campbell, veteran and CEO of Black Hawk Customs.

"Well, the fun burnt off for some of it, we stopped building and customizing bikes, but we found our niche - supporting the safety and morale of our military service members through AAFES worldwide. Being that each of us are all prior military, served in the Air Force, or like me, Army and Air Force, and we all have a desire to help our fellow brothers and sisters that have served, or are still serving, and their dependants - we found the true purpose of Black Hawk Customs. The true purpose being the Military member's largest and fastest growing powersport dealership. Campbell says that they understand the needs and requirements of our Military customers better than any civilian could ever hope for.

Asked why he chooses to be a K&N Powersport dealership Campbell says, "We've been a K&N Powersport dealer since the beginning of Black Hawk Customs."

"When you use only one product in all of your trucks, cars, and motorcycles, that you've ever owned, and not just you, but everyone at Black Hawk Customs, it only makes sense to become a dealer. We all know the quality of the product, the performance we gain, and the ease of maintenance. So the idea of offering K&N Powersport products to our number one customers, the service members of the best military force in the world, is a no-brainer. They deserve the best, so we offer them the best."

The future for Black Hawk Customs is looking incredible says Campbell. "We're expanding our locations worldwide. We're teaming up with some of the best companies the Powersport industry has to offer. We're expanding our support of our service members with more motorcycle safety days and military appreciation events that are put on at the different military installations. Matter of fact, I'm leaving March 18th, 2010, on a 38 military installation tour. At those installations we'll be promoting some companies that support us, and what we do for our military service members. K&N has offered up a ton of promotional freebies for us to give away while on the road just for this tour."

Campbell has customized a truck and trailer display and he's taking Black Hawk Customs on a two and a half month tour. Campbell is currently on the road supporting joint military forces motorcycle safety events across country.

At the age of 8, Scott Dodd's parents bought him a Quarter Midget as a birthday gift and the now 22 year old from Mira Loma, California has been tearing up the track ever since. "My dad had raced at the Pomona Valley Quarter Midget track when he was a kid. I won the very first Quarter Midget race that I participated in at that same track," says Dodd. Scott then went on to win 13 championships, 7 track championships, 3 regional championships, 2 California Monza Championships, and 1 national championship.

Scott ended up breaking over 10 track records in the 5 years he ran Quarter Midgets. "I also won over 300 races. In IKF Karts, I won 5 of the 7 races that I competed in," says Dodd. He is the youngest driver to win a Super Late Model race at Toyota Speedway of Irwindale and the youngest driver to lead the point standings in the Super Late Model class. Dodd has won in every series that he participated in, including Quarter Midgets, Karts, Micro Midgets, Speed Trucks, Dirt Super Stocks, Modifieds and Super Late Models. Dodd says one of his proudest moments came in 2001 when he became the USAC/QMA National Champion. "I got to go to the USAC awards banquet in Indianapolis and received a special Road to Indy award from Tony George, owner of the Indianapolis speedway."

Dodd relates that he was pleased with his 2009 season but is looking forward to running the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Super Late Model class at Toyota Speedway of Irwindale. "Last year I won two races and had 4 top ten finishes. Due to engine problems we were not able to run most of the races in 2009 season," says Dodd. Even so, he is one of the top picks to win the 2010 Super Late Model championship at Irwindale. "Our team has worked very hard and I've been lucky enough to win more races than most other drivers, even those that have more Super Late Model experience than me," says Dodd.

He believes having great sponsors is also part of the team's success. "K&N makes excellent products that save the consumer money and improve racing performance. We have received so much support from K&N for many years and it is greatly appreciated," says Dodd. "Racing is one of the most important things in my life. I work hard at it and have learned from some of the best racers around. I hope to be able to continue to move into higher levels of competition."
