One NHRA Super Comp Victory in a Week Not Quite Enough for K&N's Greg Boutte

Stockton, California's Greg Boutte was looking to extinguish his dry spell in a big way after several first round losses in Super Comp competition and was hoping to begin that during the NHRA national event at Infineon Raceway.

The national event would be the first of three scheduled events for Boutte and many other sportsman racers over the next week and a half at the facility, just outside of Sonoma, California, with the rescheduled Arizona NHRA National event taking place on the Monday following and a NHRA Division 7 event the following weekend.

"At the Sonoma Nationals I got pulled for the bye for first round," said Boutte. "Well you sit there for an hour and twenty minutes and your cross your fingers and hope that you are actually going to get the bye. That way you know you'll be racing in the second round of the national event."

Unfortunately, a bye wasn't in the cards for Boutte and he would be paired with Brad Plourd and the outcome meant he would have to wait until the next event to work on a round win.

"So I go back to the trailer and I'm like well doggone it, I got beat first round in Norwalk, first round at the Chicago National and Chicago Divisional and now this and you think to yourself, 'Where is this going?'," he said of his lack of on-track luck of late. Boutte would have to wait through the completion eliminations for the regularly scheduled NHRA National before getting back on the track Monday to begin the postponed Arizona Nationals only to deal with what he refers to as the "Sonoma Head-Tail Wind Combination." "It can drive you to drinking," he laughed.

"What happens is, they have an American flag right in front of the tower," he continued on a more serious note. "When it shows head wind, it could be a tail wind at a thousand feet. It is an absolute tuner's nightmare for sportsman racers. It can also be vice-versa, too. Because I have raced there for twenty years, I kind of have a feel for it, but it takes two or three people to keep an eye out on it and what it's really doing."

Unlike most NHRA events, which are spread out over several days, the rescheduled Arizona National would take place all in one day, with all drivers getting one time run to start of the day's activities.

"Getting to make your time run and then get called right back up for first round was great. I only had to change the numbers in my box by just a few numbers all day," Boutte said referring to the throttle stop timer in his delay box.

Much different than his recent events, Boutte not only made it out of first round, but all the way to the final.

As Boutte looked back over his six rounds to competition for the Arizona Nationals, second round stuck out in his mind.

"When I met up with Glenn Kern in second round, that was an important one and I knew it wasn't going to be easy," he said. "Glenn is a great competitor and I was able to just push him out which earned me a bye in the third round."

He went on to defeat Waggoner in the quarter-finals and Blaisdell in the semi-finals.

The final round was all Boutte's, as Steve Casner went for it and just missed the tree by two-thousandths of a second therefore handing the NHRA Arizona National Super Comp Championship win over to Boutte.

"As you know in the Super categories, you cannot take anyone for granted," said Boutte. "Anyone at anytime can put a one to two thou package on you and all of a sudden you are scratching your head and going, 'well how'd that happen'."

With little time to enjoy his NHRA National event victory, Boutte was back to work on Tuesday, but his mind not far from the Sonoma track, where he would return to in just a few short days to compete in the NHRA Division 7 event.

"I went back to Stockton and worked for three days and headed back for Sonoma for the next event," reflected Boutte.

With lots of information from the previous weekend, things went well for him during the first two time trials on Friday, and even though he had just won a NHRA National event, he decided to make changes to the car.

"This is what makes people go crazy about me, but after winning I wasn't happy with the car so I put a completely different set of wheels and tires on it and I put our new K&N 2nd generation dragster scoop on it. I did this all on Thursday night before the race," he chuckled.

"Usually when you put a heavier wheel and tire on the car, you should lose sixty foot and mile-per-hour, "he continued. "But with the gains from the new K&N scoop, it offset that and I actually picked up sixty foot and my mile-per-hour stayed exactly the same."

What else remained the same from his last time down the Infineon Raceway track only a few short days ago, was the outcome of the race in the Super Comp class. Boutte slashed his way through five rounds of heavy competition and earning a bye into the final, where he would meet up with fellow K&N heavy-hitter, Mike Ferderer.

What must also be noted is this was Ferderer's first time ever racing the car he was driving, a testament to his outstanding capabilities as Multi-time Champion sportsman racer.

"When a racer as good as Mike Ferderer can get into a final round with an unfamiliar car, that just shows you the quality of racer and tuner he really is," said Boutte.

Ferderer had an ever-so-slight starting line advantage over Boutte in the final, but was unable to match the top end numbers needed for Boutte's 8.908.

Boutte knows that races aren't won alone but with the help of fellow teammates and pointed out what a big help Matt Constant was after his loss in round four of Super Comp.

"He sucked it up and really helped me make the right decisions in those last few rounds," he noted.

"When I saw my win light come on, even right now I don't know what to say about that," said Boutte of his second NHRA Super Comp victory in less than a week. "There was just so much adrenaline going on at that moment. It was just something else."

K&N Sponsored Giovanni Scelzi Wins First Time Out in the Restricted 600 Class

A Scelzi racing family portrait - Julianne, Gary, Dominic and Giovanni.
So far this year the win total for Giovanni "Hot Sauce" Scelzi stands at 17 - that's the Jr. Sprint and now Restricted 600 Class combined. That's nearly unfathomable, especially when you consider that Gio won't turn ten until November, and that he tips the scales at a mighty 65 pounds.
Julianne, Dominic's and Gio's mom, reminds us that Gio's car doesn't have a front wing, where Dominic's does.

"With Gio having 16 wins, he has tied his older brother Dominic's win record of last year, so it is game-on at my house," says Gio and Dominic's dad, AKA NHRA legend Gary Scelzi.

During the last month Gio dominated pretty much every race in the Jr. Sprint Division he entered, so when the teams local Fresno, California tracks went dark for a couple of weeks, the team decided to move up to the Restricted 600 Class.

"With Delta Speedway in Stockton having two back-to-back races, we decided that was the perfect opportunity for Gio to get some practice in with a bigger car. To my surprise, and no one else's, Gio won both heat races and the main event his first time out," said Gary.

"We were absolutely amazed that he could hang on for 20 laps with a fifty horsepower, 700 pound car."

Tradition at Delta declares that the winner gets to carry the checkered flag around the race track for a victory lap, however the flag and the car at the same time proved a little too much for Gio to hang onto.
Gio has won a staggering 16 races this year. He has dominated both in Jr. Sprints and now in his first Restricted 600 Division races.

"We all had a good laugh with that one," adds Gary.

Last weekend for the second part of the back-to-back 600 Class races at Delta Speedway, the Gary Scelzi Motorsports team returned to see if Gio could repeat. This time to no one's surprise Gio did it again.

Giovanni says he goes into every race planning to do his best and wanting to win. When he doesn't win, which isn't often, he says he forgets that race as fast as he can and moves on to finding ways to do better in the next race.

Dominic says he goes to every race wanting to win and has a hard time being patient waiting for the wins to come. Dominic feels second is not good enough.

Dominic has had a lot of success at Delta in the past two weeks as well. Two weeks ago Dominic started 11th in the Main Event and finished third. He put on an amazing show in the process as he was one of the only cars to do any passing. Again, remember Dominic is only 13 and he is racing against 16 to 25 year olds with a lot more experience. Last weekend Dominic won his first heat race, starting from the third row. Then in a ten lap sprint, he finished second in the second heat race, which gave him more passing points than anyone. Dominic started the 30-lap feature on the pole, and lived up to his nickname "The Dominator" leading every lap to the checkered.

"Yes, they compete in everything they do, swimming, racing razors, racing die cast cars, you name it they compete," says Gary. "But they are always very supportive and very protective of each other."

"Fortunately for my wife Julianne and me, both our boys are self motivators. We always tell them that it is okay not to win, and that it's not the end of the world if they don't. But then I also remind them it is a lot more fun to win than it is to lose."

"I also tell them that when they don't win, to try and dissect why you didn't, and work on those areas. I always stress to them when they go out on the race track that they are the best drivers out there, and to believe that no one can beat them. So when they pull on that race track they feel they can take on the world, and most of the time they do. One of the things I am working on with both of the boys is having them learn how to work on the car and on set-ups, so they know exactly what the car feels like, before and after a change. Also, I'm teaching them to understand what every part on the car does - it's just one more tool to separate them from ordinary drivers."

Bill Balog and B Squared Motorsports Win at Oshkosh Speedzone

Bill Balog and his B Squared Motorsports team raced at Oshkosh Speedzone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin last weekend and Balog won his second Interstate Racing Association (IRA) race of 2010. The track had absorbed a good deal of rain and traction was breaking down with every lap. There were more cautions then usual too. Yet, lap-after-lap, one caution flag after another, Balog managed to consistently move forward and around traffic. By lap ten Balog was in the lead, and he battled the entire rest of the race with second place through lapped traffic to the checkered flag.
The win at Oshkosh was Balog's second of 2010 and his ninth career IRA victory.
The win at Oshkosh was Balog's second of 2010 and his ninth career IRA victory.

"Not only were the last ten laps exciting from a driver's perspective, but they were also exciting for the fans," remarked Balog.

"The lapped traffic played a huge part in us getting the win. Any time the leaders get in lapped traffic the race becomes more interesting. It feel's awesome to get the second win of the year, we have been close on many occasions but to finally get in victory lane again, this is great."

This was Balog's second win of 2010 but it's his ninth career IRA win overall, and we wondered if he felt as though the team was experiencing a momentum shift.

"Absolutely, we are starting to get these Goodyear tires figured out and we are definitely hitting our marks right now. Hopefully we can continue this into the second half of the season, and pick up a few more wins."

"We definitely feel like we have an upper hand going in to Elko Speedway," says Balog. Elko Speedway is located a half hour south of downtown Minneapolis.

"We picked up a win at the facility in 2009. We seem to be on a roll here as of late, so hopefully we can continue that at Elko.

Balog expressed his appreciation for K&N's continuing support for his efforts and hopes to return many more wins.

The team at GR Motorsports is a family committed to racing and having fun.
GR Motorsports of Cushing, Wisconsin, was established in 1992 by Bill Gross. As a teenager, Bill became interested in racing. In addition to his involvement in several stock star teams, he also raced snowmobiles and even horses. No surprise then that two of Bill's seven sons, Jason and Jeremy, now race full time.

In 1992, eldest son Jason began his career racing four cylinder mini stocks. During this time, he won a combined total of 30 races. "After that, I moved up to WISSOTA Modified class where I raced weekly at Rice Lake Speedway," says Jason. "I qualified for 13 of 18 features that year and went on to be named Rookie of the Year." More accolades followed for Jason. In 1999, he won his first feature race at Kopellah Speedway in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, and was runner up in points in 2003.

"I had a record year in 2004, winning Track Champion at Kopellah Speedway for the Modified class with six feature wins," says Jason. "I was ranked 4th in Wisconsin State Points and 18th in National Points out of 550 registered drivers and went on to be named Track Champ at Kopellah for the next two years."

In 2008, he enjoyed two feature wins, and came in 4th in NASCAR National Points at Cedar Lake Speedway where he also had ten top 10 feature finishes. 2009 brought two feature wins, and a 5th place finish in the points at Cedar Lake Speedway.

Younger brother Jeremy started his racing career in 2000, running a few races in the pure stock class. Jeremy ran a full season in 2001 and earned himself his very own Rookie of the Year at Kopellah Speedway with ten feature wins, a mid season championship and Track Points Champion in the Pure Stock class. "In 2002, I moved up to run in the Super Stock class, finishing the season with 7th place in track points, and earning another Rookie of the Year title at Kopellah Speedway," says Jeremy. He continued to run the Super Stock class and walked away with one feature win, seven top five finishes, and 3rd in track points at Kopellah Speedway in 2003.

"I decided that I wanted to try running in the modified class, so with the help of my brother Jason, I ran a limited modified schedule at Kopellah and took second in track points that year in the Super Stock," says Jeremy. He went on to win eight heat races, three feature races, 14 top five finishes and a 4th place finish in the Wissota Super Stock Points.

In 2007, Jeremy concentrated on his Modified, garnering eight top five finishes and a 5th place in track points at Cedar Lake Speedway. "I raced in Barberville, Florida, in 2008 at the Alltel Winter Nationals, where I finished top twenty in points," says Jeremy. "I took 5th in NASCAR National Points at Cedar Lake Speedway where I had ten top 10 finishes." Jeremy took 4th in track points at Cedar Lake Speedway in 2009.

Both brothers have started the 2010 season off with a bang. Jason is currently building a new 2011 Matrix Chassis and Jeremy welcomed his first child in February. "I had a great start to the 2010 season, with a feature win my first night racing at Cedar Lake and a 4th place finish my second night," says Jason. Jeremy started off his season with a top 10 finish, and then wrecked his car the second race of the season. "Hopefully, it will be ready to go for the next race," says Jeremy.

So what about the rest of this talented racing family? Father Bill owns and operates Gross Trucking and he is also the team transporter. Bill's wife Vicki is the team Mom, cook, and biggest fan. Vicki and Bill have seven children, all boys with names that start with the letter J. "Jared is the team machinist and can build anything. Jordan is the fabricator, and if you can dream it, he can make it reality. John and Jamison are the team 'gophers' - they help us with anything and they are in the pits and the stands every night for support. Last, but not least, Justin is the family car salesmen and the team manager," says Jason.

The team at GR Motorsports is a family committed to racing and having fun. "We do our best to promote the sport, as well as the sponsors in the most professional way possible," says team manager Justin. "Our goal for the 2010 season is to race in at least 60 shows at Superior and Cedar Lake speedways, in order to advertise our sponsors at as many tracks as possible. We will do our best to see that we bring home a Track Championship to be in contention for national points," says Justin. "We would not be able to do this without the help of our wonderful partners at K&N and all their great products they provide. Dirt track racing demands the best and K&N delivers."

Milton and Jennifer Tolen Earn Pro-Comp Eliminator Win at Oak Hollow

After placing third at the Augusta Southern Nationals drag boat race on Saturday, then spinning a bearing on Sunday, Milton and Jennifer Tolen drove home, put the spare motor in their boat, and won the following weekend at High Point Oak Hollow in North Carolina.
With each win Milton keeps building on the attention and respect he gets from fellow competitors.

"Well, the rush that we underwent to install the spare motor, for sure, left us a little questionable about how our performance would be at Oak Hollow. And of course we had to wonder a little about what we left at home, while we were on the road. But after some solid runs on Saturday, putting us in the number one qualifier position, the feeling was strong that Sunday would be a success," said Jacksonville, Florida resident.

Milton Tolen officially started dragboat racing in 2003, after spending many years playing around with a flat-bottom boat at the various lakes. Competing in the sanctioned events has only made him a better driver, the competition is usually on the edge, and no one counts out the other guy according to Milton.
The Tolen's were a little iffy about the spare motor they had just put in, but it worked flawlessly, as Milton won the Pro-Comp Eliminator class.

"Racing drivers from the west coast are a really fun challenge, due to the fact they most likely have more seat time. Races on the left coast are much more prevalent than the right side," remarked Milton.

Milton has managed to gain the respect of his competitors at every race he and his wife Jennifer attend.

"It helps when you claim the Comp Flat Record at the finals in Chandler, Arizona, which is one of the tougher tracks to run due to the water density, explains Milton.

The Lucas Oil Thunder at Oak Hollow Drag Boat Races was back at Festival Park this year, and bigger than ever with over 100 registered boats. Taking a cue from their land counterparts, the NHRA sanctioning body, Lucas Oil shortened the runs for its professional classes from a quarter-mile to 1,000 feet in order to lengthen the runoff area. Milton runs in the Pro-Comp Eliminator class on a 7.92 index and required no adjustment in his index for the shortened run.

"We have always depended on K&N Filters as far back as I remember," said Milton. "These are products you can really count on - round after round. We are now, and always have been, true believers in these filters. We use the oil filters and breather filters. The oil is a vital piece of your motor, and you need to feel confident that your oil filter is working efficiently and not collapsing, or adding any unwanted troubles. Why would you even consider anything but staying with the best?"

"We leave next Thursday August, 5th for Chouteau, Oklahoma, the race is the 7th and 8th. Then we're off to Marble Falls, Texas (Lakefest) the 13-15th. During both of these races we will encounter more racers from the western area, so we know the competition will tough, but we still feel strong about an another excellent outcome."
