Founded in 1973, VARA, the Vintage Auto Racing Association, is by far the largest vintage and historic auto racing and motorsports organization in the United States. On their website it states, "The primary objective of the sport of vintage and historic automobile racing is to promote the preservation of these cars in a racing format that emphasizes safety." Classic sports cars, sport racers, formula cars dating back to post WWII through the 1960's, and a sprinkling of cars from the 1970's and later, are all welcome.

You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone more fervent about VARA, or a more skilled racer than K&N sponsored Kim Madrid. The Rancho Cucamonga, California resident recently drove her hot pink Formula Vee car to a fourth consecutive FV1 championship. We caught up with Madrid and got her take on how 2010 went.
Madrid says this was the most hotly contested season for her so far, winning the title by a mere three points.
Madrid says this was the most hotly contested season for her so far, winning the title by a mere three points.

Talk a bit about how the season went for you - what was the highlight, and what would you rather forget?
"This season was the closest I have been challenged in points in many years. I did win the championship by three points, but it was tough. Bob Hatle, who normally drives a club Ford formula car (a newer version of a Formula Ford), bought a 1972 Caldwell D-13 Formula Vee, just to race against me in all the VARA races. We were an equal match, being that I have the same exact car. Most of our races had finishes were he won by .004 of a second, or vice versa, with me winning by the same amount of time."

"The highlight of this season was the Victory Lane Formula Vee Challenge Race at VARA's Oktoberfest event. We had a total of 18 Vees for that race. (One broke in practice though making it 17). The racing was very aggressive. There were drivers from the San Francisco SCCA region that came for this event. We had four different classes of Vees running. We even invited the modern Vees to join us. We did have one, and of course he did win the event overall."

"I finish third overall behind Bob, but it was a great race, with positions changing almost every lap. The moment I would like to forget would probably have to be the last race of the season at Willowsprings International Raceway, when I had absolutely nothing to challenge Bob at that race. He totally dominates at that track. My goals are to do many test sessions next season there to get faster."

Tell us about your plans for hosting the 2011 Formula Vee Challenge?
"Well, I have already started promoting this event for next year. My goal is to have at least 25 to 30 Vees running. I have been promoting even to the east coast to try and get the drivers that race in the SCCA run offs. I would like to get the big name sponsors such as K&N (again) to participate.

This will be the third annual special race, and I am going to win this race! The first year I was faced with an electrical issue, and this past year I was just out driven."

What's up with the "special" motor and transmission you're working on?
"2012 is the huge 50th reunion for Formula Vee. My engine builder, Dietmar Bauerle, from Quixote Racing in San Diego has decided to have me drive for him at Roebling Road race track in Georgia. We are going to be building a special motor that may not last a whole season, but it will be really fast for the one race weekend."

"We will have to get a long box transmission, being that that track is not as technical as tracks here on the west coast. That will give me a higher range before I run out of rpm's. Right now I have a short box transmission and that gives me more torque out of the corners, but I run out of rpm's in the straights. We are going to be lightening the car and motor parts, since the car is coming in at a heavy 890 pounds (car only), when we are required to weigh 825 pounds. We have a year and a half to get ready, but we have a lot of work ahead of us."

Are there any other projects that you'd care to talk about?
"The biggest project is that my 19-year-old son, Chris, is also racing this season in a formula Vee, and he totally has my race blood. And we have some work to do to get his car ready. He did have his first three races last season, and although he has a way to go before he catches me, he's not that far off the pace. We are going to make a good team as long as he stays behind me. LOL."

"The best thing is that we are in different classes. His car is a newer model, so that will put him in FV2, while I am in FV1. We kind of dominate with my husband running in the FV class also. The best thing is that we can all three come home winners in a weekend."

The 2011 VARA season resumes January 15 and 16 at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in Buttonwillow, California.

Robert Haslam and the AFMXA Second Annual FMX Nationals at Pala Raceway

Freestyle Motocross rider Robert Haslam

Saturday December 4, 2010 the AFMXA (American freestyle motocross association) held their second annual FMX Nationals at Pala Raceway. Both Pala and the AFMXA have been working for some time now to make the freestyle side of motocross both safer and more assessable to the everyday rider.

The Pala's facility includes multiple ramps, a foam pit and ample safety and medical staff. This is why in collaboration with the AFMXA they have been able to set up such an event. This is really the only event of its kind and it attracted riders and spectators from all over the US and even from overseas.

Freestyle Motocross involves jumping over 30 feet in the air with a competition motocross bike while hanging off the bike in different ways to impress. In the last 10 years the sport has grown to include flipping and flip combination with the bike. Since freestyle motocross is not a race judges are required to score riders based on style difficulty of tricks and overall flow. The riders went in set of twos and had 8 jumps per run allowing them to show case their best tricks before being judged.

After last years success, the AFMXA was able to expand its event to contain several different brackets of riders. It was formatted more like a motocross race with different qualifiers and main events for riders of different skill levels. There was Novice, intermediate and expert/professional. The separation of skill level made the event safer, more fair and enjoyable to watch. The Novice riders were able to jump a ramp with a gap distance of 55ft as opposed to the other classes that were jumping the standard 75 ft gap. Overall the event was very well organized and went off without any hitches. There was only one bad crash of the day when a rider did not complete the rotation of a flip and went face first into the dirt. Because time had been taken to produce a safe landing ramp and medical staff were on site in a matter of seconds this rider actually ended up walking off the track.

While we were there we were able to catch up with one of K&N's sponsored riders Robert Haslam who rode in the expert/pro class. Robert, like many other riders, has been riding from a very young age, four years old to be exact. He got into doing FMX seriously about two years ago. Since then he has teamed up with the Metal Mulisha's Justin Homan and has being doing FMX demonstrations all over the North West. Robert rides a 2007 Yamaha YZ250 and uses a K&N air filter YA-2506XD. Robert has used the K&N filter since he started riding FMX and enjoys its different look and the stronger top-end it gives the bike for launching off ramps.

Robert is different than most riders because instead of relying on the flip to impress crowds and judges he has taking “right-side up” tricks to a whole new level. One trick Robert mentioned he liked is called the "highlighter." With this trick a rider sticks his legs through the bars and lays down while his head pivots back towards the bars making him look like he is doing a reverse handstand in the air. Robert does this trick with relative ease and then manages to throw in a little extra flair by tweaking his legs in a hyper-extension like manner. Even though everyone in Robert's class was not only flipping but doing flip combinations he was still able to beat some of them. These results although not ideal were promising for Robert in the sense that the flip is the only thing holding him back from top results in the pro-class. While Robert plans on flipping in the future he also has his mind set on doing some other mind blowing right-side up tricks. All and all he is very optimistic about his future this year and future competitions by the AFMXA.

Project Rescue Rubicon - Ben and Nicki Parker's - 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

The Wrangler's secondary mission is as a determined family vehicle for the Parkers.
The Wrangler's secondary mission is as a determined family vehicle for the Parkers.
Chasing storms seems like a wholly counterintuitive activity for all but a very select few among us. Storm-chasers pursue tornadoes and severe weather, often logging hundreds of miles during a single event, driving directly into the path of what everyone else is attempting to escape. Chasers motivations for doing so are as varied as the individuals themselves. Some are feeding a childhood fascination, others are driven by scientific curiosity. For the Kearney, Nebraska couple Ben and Nicki Parker, it's a part of their livelihoods, but more importantly - it's a way for them to help others and save lives.
Project Rescue Rubicon's primary mission is reaching storm ravaged towns that are otherwise unreachable.
Project Rescue Rubicon's primary mission is reaching storm ravaged towns that are otherwise unreachable.

If you are headed into a scenario which increases your chances of encountering flying cows and other projectiles varying in degrees of destruction potential - your choice of chase-vehicle is critical. For Ben it's a Jeep thang.

"I have always been a huge fan of Jeep," says Ben. "I have personally owned many Jeeps and was already storm-chasing with a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I had totally built from ground up."
Parker plans on taking his Jeep Rubicon to various school functions in order to help raise storm awareness.
Parker plans on taking his Jeep Rubicon to various school functions in order to help raise storm awareness.

Ben displayed his Grand Cherokee at SEMA in 2008 and '09, which he says was also equipped with a K&N intake. At this year's SEMA show Ben showed his latest storm chasing, K&N augmented Jeep, a 2010 Wrangler Unlimited, titled Project Rescue Rubicon.

"Nicki is a nurse and because she is really involved with the storm-chase team, we decided a Rescue Vehicle was a good choice," explains Ben. "We knew it would be a Jeep, we just needed to figure out which one, and what we wanted done with it. We chose the Jeep JK Rubicon because of its ability to get to places other rescue responders might not be able to reach. Endless hours have been spent on planning, finding sponsors, and then of course the actual labor that has gone into the Jeep."

"Nicki and I really put a lot of thought into the overall function of the Jeep, and with what would be best for getting to people affected by storm damage. Plus, the Jeep fits our family, which was a deciding factor as well."

Ben has been storm-chasing for many years, saving lives and countless injuries with the reports he files to various TV and radio stations. Currently he chases specifically for NTV (Nebraska TV). "With the amazing support of our sponsors, this Jeep can pretty much go anywhere and that was really important. This Jeep will be used when towns get hit and they need help with recovery, clean up, rescue - whatever they need," adds Ben.

"I also own a custom car shop, so I am very busy working on building and modifying Jeeps. We are currently getting ready to release a line of bumpers, fenders and armor at Easter Jeep Safari. Nicki and I are very involved with our community and head up a huge car show benefit every year in memory of Nicki's nephew, Alex Edwards, who died from cancer at age five."

"We are members of Central Nebraska Car Club and integrate all of our storm-chasing vehicles into the events as well. Anything we can do to educate - we do it. We are anticipating taking this new Jeep to some school functions to raise storm awareness. It is vital for us to reach people, especially children, to prepare them for our storm season."

Asked why he choose to go with K&N, Ben says that is a very short story, "We need the very best intake and oil filters available - so we get K&N."

Ben says there's still a lot of work that he wants to do on the Rubicon before spring, he also plans on upgrading and rebuilding his original storm-chaser, his Grand Cherokee. Stay tuned to see what he brings to next year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Project NOS Suburban California - Featuring K&N's FIPK Air Intake System

The California specific wrap was created by Modern Image Signworks.

Cheese and crackers, Hall and Oates, high-performance and energy - there are specific, finicky rules, that dictate these into infinite accord - jointly the end product is indeed greater than the sum of its parts. With this in mind K&N Filters and NOS energy drinks have pooled, utilizing the high-performance and energy podium, as both strive to maximize performance.
The project NOS California Suburban was carefully selected to reflect the state's lifestyle.
The project NOS California Suburban was carefully selected to reflect the state's lifestyle.

"The project began with our Brand Team in Whitestone, New York," explains Jean-Marc Tuoch "JMT," District Marketing Manager Glaceau/ NOS Energy Drink. The objective was to customize Suburban's from 11 cities across the country, and to make them unique to their particular market."

The design for the "Golden State" Suburban wrap for example was inspired by the emblematic

landscape of Southern California, and it was created by Modern Image Signworks. The orange outline of the state of California is overlapped by palm trees and the state's famed scenic surf beaches were inspired by the city of Huntington Beach. And the classic hot rod displayed pays tribute to the origin of California's car culture.

"Every aspect and customization of the Suburban was carefully selected to reflect California lifestyle. We wanted to make the car fun and unique but also functional and aggressive," says JMT.

The NOS vehicle is also user friendly, and was designed to be compatible with the latest gaming consoles on the market. From the tailgate of the car, consumers can play their favorite video games, and try all the new NOS intergraded video games on the spot, at any event, at any time. NCR Design custom fabricated the sound system, using a Pioneer in-dash head unit, with the additional audio and visual provided by Sonda and ACT Mobil.

"The NOS brand represents performance and that is why we linked up with K&N. We reached out to K&N to supply an intake system to enhance the performance of the car. Our brand has always represented performance within the motorsports world, and we will continue to support it."

By now pretty much everyone, on or off the racetrack, recognizes and respects K&N as being a pure performance company. K&N is the premier authority on automotive filtering, from Monster Trucks to mud boggers to hydroplanes - if it has an engine K&N can improve its respiratory system.

Which is precisely why the Project NOS Suburbans breathe by means of a K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit (FIPK). The FIPK's contain a high flow K&N air filter with uniquely designed adapters. This creates a radius entry, allowing the engine to ingest air with less restriction compared to the factory intake system, as they smooth and straighten air flow. More air means more usable power and acceleration.

"The NOS and K&N connection came about through our involvement with all the various motorsports events we attend," says JMT. "Just as K&N is to motorsports - NOS Energy Drink is to beverage - both produce high performance. NOS is a high performance energy drink proven to enhance focus and mental alertness, increasing human horsepower, as it were, and K&N is the originator of high-flow performance for maximum power to any engine. It was just the perfect fit!"
