K&N's Greg Ventura Grabs 2012 Winternationals Super Gas Championship

Greg Ventura knocked out Jimmy Lewis at the 52nd annual O'Reilly NHRA Winternationals to gain the 2012 Winternationals Super Gas Championship title running 9.926 seconds at 141.12 mph in his Ventura Motorsports 1966 Chevy Nova.

While much of the country is still hunkered down for the winter, K&N employees Steve Williams, Bob Harris, Greg Ventura, Greg Boutte and Kevin McClelland geared up to compete against one another, at one of the more prestigious events on the NHRA calendar, the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, California. As many are familiar with, K&N Engineering is greatly involved in a vast variety of motorsports and that includes many of its employees who actively participate in one or more classes on the NHRA circuit each season. With a near perfect weather forecast for the southern California event, the crew from K&N who work together side-by-side on a daily basis look forward to getting back to the action and the sport of drag racing that each are so passionate about.

Steve Williams, K&N's Vice President of Product Development and Engineering, was more than looking forward to the event and taking care of some unfinished business. "The last three years I have been Runner up twice," he pointed out. "It's time to put this one to bed and win it!"

Williams was once again be behind the wheel of his well-known 1963 Corvette Sarmento chassis roadster powered by a 565ci Brodix BBC in Super Gas and his 2008 T&T dragster with a 622ci Brodix BBC in Super Comp. "We just freshened the motors, put on new Hoosier tires and otherwise no changes made from last season," he said. "It's great that so many people race here at K&N because we are all looking to improve our products and their performance along with making sure they fit. I am running our new lifetime oil filter on both cars along with carbon K&N hood scoops and air filters."

Also competing in the 9.90 index class was K&N's Bob Harris, who was chomping at the bit for that first pass down the quarter mile. "I've done well at Pomona in the past," said K&N's Corporate Race Accounts Manager. "I have been to the semis a couple of times and won the K&N Winternationals back in 2004. We have a brand new Vrbancic Bros Racing 572 bullet under the hood. The motor is making more power and torque, so that should be good. I'm just excited to get back in the driver's seat after having the motor break on our very first time trial last year."

Harris competed in his uncle's 2002 Gary Hansen Race Cars Pontiac Grand Am with hopes to not only do very well, but stay away from his co-workers as long as possible. "It's great to work with a bunch of guys here at K&N that are passionate about racing. Unfortunately, we all compete against each other in the same classes, so that is the downside. Bottom line, we're all there to win and win for K&N."

Greg Boutte's 2002 Worthy dragster

K&N Product Specialist, Greg Boutte was looking to secure a Super Comp win in his 2002 Worthy dragster, but not with the familiar 598ci motor that he is accustomed to competing with. "Last year at the World Finals, I broke a tip of a valve," he noted. "The valves that I want are not quite available yet, so a friend of mine loaned me a 565 to use until I get my motor back together. I will be using Wayne's motor for Pomona, Phoenix and the Phoenix divisional. Even though I won't be using my motor, I still will be protecting the engine with the brand new K&N reusable, washable oil filter along with K&N air filters on everything I own and drive, right down to the rig that gets me to and from the events."

Boutte is no stranger to the winner's circle at the famed facility and he would have loved to add a win at the Winternationals to his victory during the 2009 World Finals. "I average about four rounds at Pomona," he said. "Most of the K&N crew compete in Super Gas, so it's only Steve Williams that I need to worry about staying away from in Super Comp. In twenty years, I've only met up with him three times."

Another Super Gas entry for the NHRA Winternationals was Kevin McClelland, Special Projects Manager for K&N. McClelland has been hitting the NHRA scene with his current 1927 Ford Davis built roadster since 2000 and just prior to the commencement of last season, completely updated the car and chassis to kept it not only current, but safe. "The car was completely rebuilt with lots of new upgrades, new engine last year, but during this off-season I had to replace the transmission and I made lots of upgrades to make it pretty much bulletproof," he explained.

McClelland was looking forward to the opportunity to repeat history with a shot to win not only the season opener at Pomona, but to come back and do it again during the World Finals, as he did in grand style winning both events in 1997. "It's a great race for myself and my family because we live here and lots of our friends are here," he explained. "Working together and then racing together with so many of the guys from K&N is a great thing. With Super Gas being random pairing first round, we do a good job of staying away from each other, but after that, all bets are off. Should we come up against one another, we race it straight up. I don't care if it's Williams or any one of them, we are going to do whatever we can out there to cut each other's throat."

Greg Ventura is yet another K&N employee who was looking for a Super Gas National Event win at Pomona and got it. Ventura's 1966 Chevy Nova is equipped with a 565ci BBC and he has been racing in the car since the 1999 season. The Material Lifecycle Analyst for K&N also has a car that he has competed with since 1993 in Super Street [10.90 index class]. "Since last year, we have just done the typical off-season stuff to both cars, freshen the motors, trannys, new tires and things like that," he said. "The cars are completely protected with K&N products, the oil filters, the air filters, which even have the K&N dry chargers on them."

"It's really fun to go to events like this and get to see everyone away from the office," he continued. "For all of us to be able to get out there and do our thing, it's kind of a way to release and do the things we all love to do. Yes, we are able to not meet up first round, but if we do get paired up once we are on the ladder, [laughs] you are bound to find some hurt feelings come Monday morning."

Impressive SNUGTOP Toyota Tundra Was Featured at the 2011 SEMA Show

Many of the vehicles that appear at SEMA are strictly for advertising. Some are daily driven vehicles transformed into custom show cars. Some are company vehicles loaded with aftermarket parts. Let's think about this for a moment... Some companies provide their sales representatives with the luxury of a company vehicle. These vehicles are primarily used to travel around and visit their customers. Normally the only thing that is done to the vehicle is filling up the gas tank and changing the oil. Instead of serving one purpose, SNUGTOP allows their sales reps to customize their company vehicle. This is a useful tool that allows the customer to assess and visualize the quality of aftermarket products out there.

"Corky" Ivan L. Volp III has been a SNUGTOP employee for the last 17 years. Through his extensive network, he was able to build a truck that displays the various manufactures product as well as the one he promotes. We were fortunate enough to catch up with him and get the scoop on his slick 2011 Toyota Tundra.

Ivan loves his job and explained, "The truck is used mainly to advertise".

The company owned truck has been equipped with aftermarket products from the following manufactures:

-SNUGTOP Aero Sport Truck Cap -AMP Research (Power Step)
-Ready Lift (Suspension)
-RBP (Custom Grill)
-Gibson (Exhaust)
-K&N (Intake System)
-MHT (Wheels)
-Vision X (lighting)
-APM Auto (ram air hood)
-Toyo Tires

One of the coolest upgrades has to be the ram air hood that functions with the K&N intake system. The incoming air is actually funneled through the scoops in the hood straight into the K&N high flow air filter.

Ivan said, "I have had K&N on many different vehicles and enjoy the noticeable power increase." K&N power testing of the two available K&N intake systems for 2007-2011 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7L engine showed an estimated gain of 13 horsepower.

Ivan would like to thank all the manufactures and people involved with putting the truck together including James at Toys For Trucks in Hesperia, California.

Hose Candy Uses K&N Universal Air Filter in 2011 SEMA Booth

Automotive manufactures like Hose Candy spend hours getting a booth ready before the doors open at SEMA. The first step in booth design is to create something that is functional and inviting. The next step is to designate which products will be displayed. Most manufactures will exploit their latest released products or future products. Once everything is mocked up it gets shipped off to SEMA in hopes of getting there on time and in one piece.

Last year Hose Candy had a booth set up at SEMA full with different products they manufacture. They offer radiator hose skins, couplers, vacuum lines, and specialty hose fittings. They have a signature Sidewinder fitting for troublesome hoses that need to get disconnecting to make a job easier. This is most certainly one of those companies that offer a product that not only looks great but can get many people out of a bind.

One product that happened to make its way into the Hose Candy booth was a universal K&N high flow air filter. It was clamped onto a small turbo in the front of the booth. This goes to show that K&N offers an air filter for almost every application. If you require an air filter, but cannot seem to locate the correct fit, check out the K&N website at www.knfilters.com.

K&N 2012 Race Update with Supermoto Team Honda Austria

Rothbauer's weapon of choice is a Honda CRF450R modified for Supermoto.
Rothbauer's weapon of choice is a Honda CRF450R modified for Supermoto.
The reason why Supermoto racing is such a huge fan favorite is because it unites many of the more spectacular components of motocross and road racing. Typically tracks are configured of 70-percent road and 30-percent dirt, requiring a finely-tuned hybrid set of skills stemming from both racing venues in order to succeed. K&N's Team Honda Austria continues to be one of the premier international Supermoto teams around, with International Supermoto stars, Florian Wedenig and Andi Rothbauer.
Andi Rothbauer began to come on strong towards the end of the season after his injury at the end of 2010.
Andi Rothbauer began to come on strong towards the end of the season after his injury at the end of 2010.

The current Honda Manufacture supported Supermoto team formed in 2006. However, the original Team Honda Austria (THA) first got involved with Supermoto back in 2000, and they have always supported private Honda riders. The team has good reason to believe that 2012 will be another season for them to rule the European Supermoto landscape.

Last season former State Champion, Andi Rothbauer, had several third place finishes and made it to the podium four times in all. He was battling for third overall up until the very last race. "In the beginning it was all about recovery of my very bad shoulder injury in 2010, Rothbauer told K&N. "But the kick-off events went very well. I was getting stronger and faster with each race, starting to really challenge at some new event. At the finals I was all focused on getting a top-three end year result. But always going 'all-in' means you're open to making mistakes. I made a very bad turn at the finals and injured my knee. So instead of third I ended up in the hospital and finished fifth overall in 2011 in the S-Open Pro."
Stunt and Supermoto demonstrations are a stress-free favorite for Rothbauer.

The newest team member, Florian Wedenig brought his expertise in motocross, cross country, as well as Supermoto Junior Cup experience to the team last year. Wedenig adapted quickly to his first full season aboard the 450 Honda, and by mid-season he earned his first podium finish.

"I was always eager to get this thing going. Race after race I was having more fun and getting more confidence in my bike," commented Wedenig. "At the end of the last racing season I accomplished 4th position in the overall results S1 Professional. This means I have once again made my goal finishing top 5!"
Florian Wedenig calls his first ever Supermoto podium finish the highlight of 2011.

"Andi's four podiums proved to him that he was always competitive," added team marketing spokesperson Claudia Rothbauer. "Some of the team's highlights were also attending a lot of expeditions and doing some real cool Supermoto and Stunt shows for several sponsors."

"I love doing stunt and Supermoto Shows," Andi chimes in. "During racing events we are all focused on our race-performance. However at expeditions we can just enjoy the cheering crowd and represent our sponsors at our best!"

For Wedenig last year's highlight was landing his first podium. "This was just a dream come true. Two years ago I was still in junior cups riding against kids," said Wedenig. "Now I am challenging my former heroes. Finishing top -three in Kaltenbach showed me the awesome progress I've made since joining Honda Austria team."
Wedenig came to THA with familiarity in motocross, cross country, as well as Supermoto Junior Cup experience.

Claudia feels that as a team they have grown stronger and more competitive. "We continue to compete at a very high level and we are always a threat to our competitors. Injuries can happen at any time, but our riders are in great physical condition and they remain focused and strong, which helps them recover very fast." Rothbauer has already started full conditioning workouts, while Wedenig is already attending some indoor events.

"We will again mainly use Honda CRF450R 2012 motocross bikes, which we will remodel to Supermoto weapons. Honda Austria is giving us a great base for competitive bikes. The main components such as high power K&N Air Filters (HA-4509XD) and Oil Filters (KN-116) will not change. Those are always a big part of our success," says Claudia with a smile. "At the moment we are testing some more tires companies and suspension components, to bring more power on the track. By the time the new championship will start in April, we are sure to have all components figured out and will be ready to win!"

Team Honda Austria will begin race testing at events in Italy beginning in March. "Around Easter holiday we are expecting the first test sessions in Austria," Claudia adds. The International Austria Championship will kick-off on April 22nd.

Team Babbitt's Continues Winning Streak In AMA Arenacross Championship Series

Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki has expereinced a stellar season in the AMA Arenacross Championship Series.
Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki has expereinced a stellar season in the AMA Arenacross Championship Series.
Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki recently pulled into the Kansas Expocenter at Topeka, with anticipation of continuing a winning streak.

Although the opening night of the race fell on Friday the 13th, the team had no intentions of letting superstitions get in their way of pursuing success in the AMA Arenacross Championship Series.
Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki recently earned positions on the podium while racing in the AMA Championship Series at the Kansas Expocenter.
Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki recently earned positions on the podium while racing in the AMA Championship Series at the Kansas Expocenter.

Manning his Kawasaki KX 250F, Chad Johnson made a showing early on, when he earned the victory in the "Dash For Cash". Although experiencing success during his first ride of the event, Johnson then crashed in the main event, finishing the race in seventh place. Returning the following night, he experienced a stellar ride, earning his second trip to the top of the podium during the season.

While Johnson took the victory, his teammate, Tyler Bowers had aspirations of his own. Bowers showed up at Topeka tied for the points lead, but had full intentions of leaving the event as the sole leader. In fact, in spite of clipping the gate with his front tire, the rider grabbed the holeshot on Friday night and never looked back, as he took his seventh win of the season.
Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki anticipates continued success in Arenacross racing.

During his heat on Saturday night, Bowers skidded out and went down upon an attempt to make a move to the inside corner, but still managed to finish in the sixth spot. Starting in the second row for the main event, the rider immediately started working his way forward off of the gate, and was situated in fifth place during the first corner. Bowers continued muscling his way toward the front of the pack, and eventually crossed the finish line in second place behind his teammate, Chad Johnson, ending the event with a twelve point lead in the series.

When asked the key to their success during the 2011-2012 season, team manager, Denny Bartz said, "I think the whole program has a lot to do with the success of the team. Eddie Babbitt and I want to win, and we try to provide the riders with the tools they need to win." Referring to Chad Johnson and Tyler Bowers, he continued, "Both riders are capable of coming from the back to the front to be on the box consistently."

As one might suspect, although experiencing a stellar season, Team Babbitt's is no different from any of their competitors in the fact that they have experienced low points as well. In fact, during a previous event, the wind was let out of their sails when Bowers lost twenty two points. On the other hand, the stroke of bad luck was obviously short-lived as the team has dominated the series, winning eleven of the fourteen events in which they have raced this year.

Talent and skill has played a crucial role in the team's success, but they are also aware that to continue their winning streak, maintenance must always remain a priority. That in mind, Team Monster Energy Babbitt's Kawasaki depends upon K&N air and oil filters to keep the internal components of their engines properly protected from the rigors of Arenacross racing.

"Maintenance is a must in our program," explained Bartz. "We have been with K&N since we started in 2006." The team manager continued by explaining that upon using the products, they showed a one horsepower gain on the dyno.

As the season nears its end, Team Babbitt's has full intentions of continuing their winning streak. When asked the key to continued success, Denny Bartz answered, "Podium Finishes." Referring to the AMA Arenacross Championship series, he continued, "It's the best bar to bar racing in AMA.

We want to win as many races as possible."
