Raised on a Maryland farm, Shawn Norfolk acquired a passion for the sport of fishing at an early age. Referring to the family's property, he recalled, "We fished in the pond as much as possible. My grandmother lived on the Patuxent River, and we fished there all the time as well."

Eventually moving to California, Norfolk was introduced to a totally different environment from the life he had grown accustomed to. However, it didn't take long to figure out that fishing was good on the west coast as well. In fact, that's when his passion for bass fishing increased exponentially. "Once I move to California and caught a few of these big hybrid bass out here," he explained, "I really got into it hard."

And "get into it hard" he did. Norfolk eventually began to compete in tournaments held throughout his section of the state. In fact, he has been fishing against fellow anglers for in the neighborhood of 15 years.

When asked how he got introduced to competitive bass fishing, he said, "One of my fishing buddies suggested I do it. I had always just fished for fun prior to that. I finished third, and that was that. . .I was hooked," no pun intended.

Still a California resident, Norfolk has the luxury of living in an environment where the temperatures never dip to a point that will adversely affect fishing. "Luckily you can fish year around," he shared. "The tournament schedules vary widely, but that's what's cool about fishing in Southern California. The water is never frozen, and the bite is always on. The best time of the year, out here, though, by far is March April and May. That pre-spawn reaction bite is fun, and once the spawn starts, that's when you catch the big 'uns."

In the middle of raising a 12 and a 15 year old and with a full time job, the angler strives to fish as close to home as possible but that's no indication that fishing opportunities are sparse. Norfolk manages to juggle his time in a manner that he can fish as a co-angler in Top Stick sponsored events, and is also scheduled to compete in the Castaic Float Tube tournament series.

Judging from previous success, the angler will likely be a force to be reckoned with during his upcoming tourneys. His largest catch during a tournament weighed in at 9 pounds and eight ounces. This is an impressive number, no doubt. However, the angler has managed to coax three fish, tipping the scales at double digits, from the water during his recreation time.

"I caught all three at Castaic Lake. Two years ago, on a weekday, I hit the lake for two hours before work, and spotted a big shadow in the water," recalled Norfolk. "So I tossed out my Zipper ZitZit to find out if this shadow was a big fish or a stump. I saw the shadow head out to deeper water, so I decided to stay there and figure this thing out."

Watching as the shadow continued to reappear and swim back into the depths he cast his white lure in the general direction of the fish. Watching as his lure disappeared, he set the hook, landing a 10-pound largemouth bass.

Returning to the same section of the reservoir at the workday's end, the angler enticed another trophy into biting. She was the biggest catch of his life, weighing in at a staggering 13-pounds and 15-ounces. Norfolk also managed to catch another double digit bass, on a different date, at the upper lake in Castaic.

Well, the proof's in the pudding, and Shawn Norfolk is an obvious candidate for success in the tournaments to come. And even though he is a co-angler in one series and paddles a float tube in the other, he must still consider keeping an engine fine tuned and in tip top running condition. Without the aid of his Honda Ridgeline, he could not make the tourneys prior to their designating starting times.

He is a firm believer in K&N products and depends upon their expertise and quality to ensure his vehicle performs to its best ability. "I'm on my second Ridgeline and have used the K&N intake system on both of them," he ensured. "K&N stands for quality. You never have to worry about performance when K&N is involved. It's a no-brainer.

"I use K&N filters on my motorcycles, and have since the early 80s. I don't get to ride like I used to though, mostly because I've replaced my seat-time with fishing time and family time. . .I've been using K&N since I was a little kid (in the neighborhood of 35 years) on my 80 cc two strokes."

Looking to the future, Shawn Norfolk concluded, "I'm going to win a float tube tournament this year, win a big-fish award, be in the box in a Top Stick tournament, and outfish the guy on front of the boat every time. That's how it's going down this year."

Last year Cam Reimers was the new kid in an exceedingly rough school of hard knocks – the engagingly competitive Traxxas TORC Series. His undersized team parked their pick-up truck and trailer next to the mega teams, with their semi-haulers and full entourage crews, and he went to work like everyone else. What he lacked in racing bling, he made up for with raw talent and gritty determination, and after only a few rounds it was apparent to everyone paying attention that Reimers belonged. Then, after the rookie savored his first Pro-Light Podium finish at Redbud, Reimers fully believed he belonged, and the proverbial light switch in his thinking clicked to high intensity.

“Ever since our podium finish at RedBud, I not only feel like I have a lot more confidence, but everyone on our team feels that we are a top-5 truck,” remarked Reimers at the time.

For the Cam Reimers Motorsports crew the 2014 Traxxas TORC season takes on an entirely new complexion, with increased sponsor support, more experience and a smoldering competitiveness that refuses to be ignored. We talked to the Ogden, Iowa, resident to get his perspective at this early point of his race schedule.

How did the first couple of rounds of the 2014 TORC season treat you?

“The first round went well for me in Primm, Nevada. There were 27 Pro-Lites entered and I managed a solid 8th place. Even though our team plans to contend for podiums this year, the 8th was great points for me in the championship so I was happy with it.”

“I believe we showed even better speed in Round 2, where I was running in the top 5 early before we had a transmission failure that resulted in a 23rd place finish. It was our new driver, Ian Harris’ first time in the truck, and he stayed very clean with little mistakes to finish 15th in Round 1 and 18th in Round 2. I’m excited to see what he has in store for the coming rounds. Both trucks are back home in Iowa now getting prepped with fresh K&N air filters and oil filters and they will be ready to go for Charlotte Motor Speedway on 25th & 26th.”

What’s the biggest difference for you starting the second season and what are some key lessons you learned last season that you’ll apply this year?

“I will be driving an all new truck for 2014, so that has been another hurdle to overcome at the start of the season, but it actually came very natural and I already feel just as comfortable in it as I did my 2013 truck. For my second season I do not have to start from ground zero to get used to how a Pro-Lite needs to be driven, how the events are formatted, and where the fast lines are on certain tracks. I tasted podium success last season and I plan to come out every event this year and give it everything I have to run up front in this stacked field. What I learned in my first season I am able to relay to Ian, so he can polish his skills even quicker. Driving a Pro-Lite does not come very natural and I wished all last year that I could’ve had someone giving me tips on what to do to improve, so I believe that to be very beneficial this year.”

Other than *Radar tires did you make any other changes to your program during the off season?

“Our program underwent significant changes for 2014. We were one of the smallest teams last year, just coming out of a truck and trailer, and now this year we are fielding two Pro-Lites with drivers Ian and myself. We have a stunning looking new race hauler, and we also have a full-time crew working in the shop between races. That takes some load off of my dad and I. As you mentioned, we added Radar Tires to our program this year and their new Renagade R5 tire works phenomenal, I couldn’t be happier with the product and the relationship we have with the people there. Along with our returning sponsors SSI Decals, TiLube, and K&N, we also added several new brands to our team this year including Makson Construction, RCI Safety, 141 Speedway, Fiberwerx, Rockwell Watches and Team Associated RC Cars. Although Cam Reimers Motorsports is only in its second season, the growth we have experienced leaves me with confidence that our program can be sustained for years to come until we are a top team in the off-road industry.”

When the fickle finger of fate points your way, the only thing to do is cut your losses, and get on with it. The pride of Campbellsville, Kentucky, William Elliot Despain understands that reality all too well. Despain Motorsports started their season at Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, Tennessee, and things soured almost immediately.

“Our first night at Clarksville ended really before it even started,” established Elliot. “After only three hotlaps I felt a vibration in the car and before I could get slowed down the pull bar bracket broke out of the frame.”

The new power plant that was installed over the winter has 200 more horsepower than the old motor and it caused the pull bar mount to rip out. “The car had heavy damage to the cockpit because the driveshaft came out and it busted the tail shaft on the transmission and broke the bell housing,” Elliot explains.

The next race was at Brownstown, Indiana, were the pill draw for starting positions saw Elliot start dead last in his heat. “We finished 5th, so we started 9th in the feature, and drove up to finish 6th. The next weekend we went back to Brownstown for the 16th Annual Indiana Icebreaker Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event,” Elliot said. “We had bad luck in our heat, which forced us to start 12th in the B-main, and only the top two cars transferred to the A-main. We had a great car and drove up to 2nd. Then we started 19th in the feature and finished 15th.”

After their less than stellar 2014 season opening the Despain crew pressed on undeterred, traveling to Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Kentucky, the following weekend. Billed as "Kentucky's Baddest Bullring," Elliot, driving the Billy and Lisa Despain owned K&N backed Lucas Oil Products No.75e, qualified 6th. With the heat race invert, he started on the outside of row one in the first heat for the speedway’s 42nd season opener.

“We won the heat so we started on the pole of the feature. At the start of the feature the outside pole sitter got the jump and kinda drove away from us. After about six laps we got into some lap traffic, and the leader got in a wreck with a lap car. We took the lead on lap 7 and never looked back, and we got our first win of the season! It was a great win for Despain Motorsports. I only wished my mom and dad had been there, they were on a vacation cruise. We have had some really good runs so far, and a little bad luck, but getting a win the 4th night out was huge for us,” remarked the 24-year-old driver.

Having repositioned his season back on the winning track, Despain Motorsports then returned to Ponderosa Speedway for Ray Cook’s Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals, for the 2nd Annual Spring Showdown. After starting 8th in the Pro Late Model feature, Elliot chased down the leader, and then on a restart, he was right on the leader’s bumper. With just four laps remaining, Elliot made the pass and held on to score his first-ever Pro Late Model feature event victory.

“Elliott would like to thank everyone that has made his lifelong dream come true,” added Billy his proud dad. “He started 8th and drove to the win in only his second ever start in a late model.”

This month the Ford Mustang becomes the newest member of an extremely elite club – vehicles in continuous production for 50 years. Gittin recently kicked off the eleventh season of Formula Drift competition on the streets of Long Beach, California, to a sold out crowd. This was the seventh consecutive year of drifting on the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Street Course. Gittin qualified 2nd and finished 9th overall.

"I feel awesome heading into Round 2,” said Gittin. “I have the best Ford Mustang RTR we have ever had and the amazing RTR Drift Team supporting me. I am looking forward to fighting hard, having some fun, and leaving with a good result!"
