The word Dime originally denoted a one-tenth part, such as one-tenth of a U.S. dollar and most Americans picture a coin bearing the likeness of President Roosevelt. Others, particularly those in an urban setting, have their own definition for the word dime. “One Fine Dime” can be used to describe a person of extreme beauty who, on a scale of 1-10, would be referred to as “a perfect ten.” The 1969 Chevrolet C10 pickup restored and modified by Creations N’ Chrome is neither a U.S. coin, or a stunning woman, however, the nickname “Fine Dime” certainly fits as this truck is the personification of classic American automotive beauty.

Creations N’ Chrome was founded in 2005 by Gary & Kristin Watson and they pride themselves in being able to make their customers’ vision a reality. The Fine Dime 1969 Chevy C10 is owned by Creations N’ Chrome customer Hugo Castillo. Hugo had seen the 1968 Chevy C10 that Creations N’ Chrome built for the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in 2012. Hugo approached Creations N’ Chrome about building a similar C10 truck that would be a dependable daily driver as well as turn some heads. For the Fine Dime, Creations N’ Chrome focused on improving drivability, ride quality, and the driver’s experience while maintaining the styling that makes the second generation C10 such a desirable classic pickup.

With a laundry list of engine, suspension, and braking modifications, Creations N’ Chrome bumped the performance level of this classic truck up to modern muscle car standards. Powering the Fine Dime is an LS1 engine from a 2002 Chevy Camaro Z28. By simply increasing the compression, adding an aftermarket camshaft, exhaust headers, and a K&N air filter this tried and true power plant put down an impressive 370 horsepower at the rear wheels.

With the powertrain sorted out, Creations N’ Chrome moved on to addressing the ride quality of the Fine Dime. They swapped out the stock suspension for a Hotchkis TVS suspension system, Wilwood disc brakes, Falken tires, and HRE wheels. Suspension and brakes aren’t the only necessities for improving ride quality. Leather wrapped seats, door panels, and steering wheel, combined with power windows and a custom stereo system ensure the driver rolls along in comfort and style.

Swapping a modern V8 engine into a classic Chevrolet truck required building a custom air intake system equipped with one of K&N’s clamp-on universal high-flow air filters. “The Fine Dime is running a cone air filter, oil filter, and crankcase breathers by K&N” said Chris Matye, director of business at Creations N’ Chrome. “The vast availability of sizes and shapes, K&N’s reputation and superior filtering were the main reasons for choosing K&N. After a few minutes on the K&N website, we found an air filter in the exact size and shape that we were looking for” continued Matye.

Gary Watson, owner and founder of Creations N’ Chrome, has been using K&N products since he was 17 years old on his 1984 Ford Mustang SVO. When asked why he chooses K&N, Gary replied “Besides the obvious performance benefits, I like that K&N offers (filter) applications for just about everything. Whether it’s one of my Mustangs, tow truck, motorcycles or dirtbikes, I can find air and oil filters at just about any parts store. Installing a K&N air filter is always the first modification I make to any new vehicle.”

In its present state the Fine Dime is a far cry from the rusty old farm truck that first journeyed into the Creations N’ Chrome shop. Attention to details such has hidden wiring under the hood and a powdercoated frame makes this 1969 Chevy C10 a perfect ten and deserving of the name Fine Dime.

Noteworthy modifications to the 1969 Chevrolet C10 pickup owned by Hugo Castillo include:

LS1 engine, 370 RWHP/4L60E automatic transmission
K&N Air, Oil, and Breather filters
Hotchkis Complete TVS suspension system
Wilwood Disc Brakes
HRE Performance Wheels 945RL, 20x11-rear & 20x9-front
Falken Tires, Azenis FK453

Rhodes took the lead on lap 14 in the Visit Hampton VA 175 at Langley Speedway in Virginia and stayed out front for the remainder of the race.

“I can’t thank our guys enough at Turner Scott Motorsports,” said Rhodes, driver of the No. 41 Alpha Energy Solutions Chevrolet, after the event.

“I like to call them the ‘Dream Team,’ and I’m just the fortunate one that gets to drive the Alpha Energy Solutions Chevy.

It was really tough early on, I thought we were gonna have a bad day, but they didn’t give up, I didn’t give up and that’s why we were standing over there in Victory Lane.”

He won his fifth race of the season. Ricky Craven set the record for most consecutive wins with five when the K&N Pro Series East was the Busch Series North in 1991. Dylan Kwasniewski holds the K&N Pro Series East record for most wins in a season with six set in 2007.

“Those guys kind of pressured me a little bit on those restarts,” said Rhodes. “I had to get away from them and I knew that last restart was going to be tricky. You never know when a caution is going to come out. Luckily we timed it right and were able to get away from them and pull off the win.”

Hayley finished in second place. Ruston matched her best K&N Pro Series East finish in third place. She is the highest finishing woman driver in K&N Pro Series East history.

“Our car was pretty good since practice,” said Ruston.

“Mike Fritts gave me a good car, but we just got a little too tight there at the end. Hopefully when we go to New Hampshire in a couple of weeks we can keep this momentum going, get us another top five and be fighting for the win.”

Heckert crossed the finish line in fourth place, followed by Kaz Garla in fifth.

Rhodes has a dominating 71-point lead in the K&N Pro Series East standings after nine races.

Ben Rhodes Gets The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Race Hat Trick In The Pensacola 150

Ben Rhodes won the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Five Flags Speedway in Florida. It was his third win in a row in the K&N Pro Series East.

Cameron Hayley, in the number 98 Cabinets by Hayley Chevrolet, passed Ben Rhodes half way through the race to lead 20 laps before finishing third in the Pensacola 150

If he keeps it up, Rhodes will race into some rare company.

Rhodes, a rookie in the K&N Pro Series East, has a 55-point lead in the East Series standings after eight races, the halfway point in the season.

Only three other drivers have won the K&N Pro Series East championship as a rookie. They are Kyle Larson, Ryan Truex and Joey Logano, all drivers in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

“I never would have thought we’d have such a good season,” said Rhodes, driver of the No. 41 Alpha Energy Solutions Chevrolet. “I’ve been building on top of all that. It makes my feedback better. Even though we only had 45 minutes of practice and this was my first time seeing the track, we did a good job tuning the car.”

The Alpha Energy Solutions Chevrolet Impala, driven by Ben Rhodes, led 50 laps and won the race at Five Flags Speedway with a .985 second margin over second place

Rhodes led the final 16 laps of the Pensacola 150 to win his fourth race of the season. Cameron Hayley took the lead in the race at the halfway point. He passed Rhodes, who dropped to fourth in the early part of the second half of the race. Rhodes moved back out front on a restart late in the race.

“Trying to save tires is always tough,” said Rhodes. “You don’t know if you’re going to get any breaks at the end. … Once you start saving you just hope you can get a break to get back up there or you have enough tire to run back up there. And I was trying to do both.”

Brandon Jones made a late charge to pass Hayley and finish in second place.

“We kind of saved too much, honestly, in the beginning,” Jones said. “And the end. I saw (Hayley) getting sideways off the corner. (Crew chief) Shane (Huffman) kept getting on me to drive straight off the corners and not spin the tires on exit. I think we were just getting more drive off and fortunately got him there at the end.”

Hayley, who led for 20 laps and was out front as late as lap 133, crossed the finish line in third place.

“Obviously it’s not what we wanted. We wanted to go out there and get the win,” Hayley said. “At that point, we had so many cars that had burned their tires off. I knew I had burned mine off a little bit more than everybody else getting to that lead but I knew I had them. I had them and that caution really hurt us a lot.”

Kenzie Ruston, who cut a tire and fell a lap down in the race, came back for a fourth-place finish.

Grey Gaulding, who led a race-high 80 laps and won the pole, his second of the season, finished in fifth place.

Hayley moved into third place in the K&N Pro Series East standings. He is 10 points behind Gaulding and three points ahead of Jones.

The K&N RP-5168 carbon fiber top air filter is used in the K&N air intake system for the 2012-2014 Chevy Camaro ZL1 6.2-liter supercharged V8

The advanced composite technology used in carbon fiber reinforced polymer, commonly referred to as carbon fiber, results in an incredible strength to weight ratio. The use of carbon fiber is ideal for applications that require strength, lightness and stiffness.

Carbon fiber offers an excellent strength to weight ratio and a show quality look to K&N universal clamp-on air filter RP-5168.

Carbon fiber offers an excellent strength to weight ratio and a show quality look to K&N universal clamp-on air filter RP-5168.

K&N filters has an on-site composite department which builds hand-laid carbon fiber components ranging from air filter bases to custom dragster air scoops and racing air boxes. Curing is done in an autoclave where both mechanical and chemical processes ensure precision fitment and structural integrity.

K&N carbon fiber clamp-on universal air filter, RP-5168, uses an attractive hand-laid carbon fiber 5-inch diameter air filter top. The 7.5-inch diameter air filter base of RP-5168 is made with ultra-strong molded pliable rubber and incorporates a 6-inch inner diameter flange. The flange of RP-5168 is 1-inch in length and can be stretched up to 1/16-inch to fit in-between size inlets. This molded flange absorbs vibration and allows for secure attachment. At the heart of RP-5168 is the world famous K&N high flow cotton air filter media in a 6-inch height with 5/8-inch deep filter pleats.

The RP-5168 carbon fiber top air filter has been tested in the K&N in-house filtration lab to ensure maximum possible airflow achievable while providing guaranteed engine protection. Test results show that RP-5168 can flow over 350 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air at 1.5 inches of water pressure. To put it simply, RP-5168 flows plenty of air to be used in the K&N Air Intake System, 63-3079, which fits the 580 horsepower 6.2-liter supercharged V8 of the 2012-2014 Chevy Camaro ZL1.

Air Filter test data for K&N RP-5168

Air Filter test data for K&N RP-5168

K&N performs filtration efficiency testing following the ISO 5011 protocol to guarantee that our air filters will provide high airflow without sacrificing engine protection. K&N RP-5168 was shown to have a 98.50% overall filtration efficiency when tested with ISO coarse test dust. Calling this test dust coarse is almost preposterous, as 22% of the dust is rated at 10 microns or less. To provide a visual, a human blood cell is typically between 6 and 8 microns across. Click here to view detailed test results.

As with other K&N high-flow air filters, RP-5168, is washable and reusable using one of the K&N Recharger air filter service kits. Recharger, 99-5000, includes 12 fluid ounces of air filter cleaner and a 6.5 ounce aerosol bottle of air filter oil for quick and easy application. Recharger, 99-5050, differs in that it includes an 8 ounce squeeze bottle of K&N filter oil for a more precise application. RP-5168, when used in custom or race vehicles, is warranted against defective materials or workmanship for one year from date of purchase with no mileage limitation.

K&N equips the 69-7064TS performance air intake system with the oversized RX-4730XD Xstream top air filter. Xstream top air filters feature a patented filter top design which provides increased surface area, over a comparable sized standard top K&N air filter, to help increase airflow while also providing outstanding engine protection. K&N used the RX-4730XD filter to improve power delivery and drivability. RX-4730XD is made with K&N’s famous high-flow filter media so it’s washable and reusable and can even go up to 100,000 miles between cleanings, depending on driving conditions.

The 69-7064TS air intake system features a custom designed heat shield which is specific to the 2013-2016 Nissan Altima 2.5 Liter. The heat shield shrouds the air filter under the hood, helping to protect air entering the intake from radiant heat coming off the engine. Plus the heat shield used in 69-7064TS incorporates a fresh air scoop adapter to retain the use of the stock fresh air duct. Retaining the stock cold air duct keeps incoming air temperatures within factory specifications.

All of the design features of the 69-7064TS performance air intake system work together to deliver increased performance. On the dyno, 69-7064TS produced an estimated additional 7.75 horsepower and 9.51 pound-feet of torque over the stock system. Additional horsepower and torque can come in handy when merging onto a highway, or when driving up a steep grade.

The 69-7064TS performance air intake system is an excellent upgrade for your Nissan Altima 2.5, 2.5S, 2.5 SV, or 2.5 SL. With simple to follow instructions and no need to make any other modifications to the vehicle, you’ll be on the road in approximately 90 minutes with more horsepower under your right foot. If all that weren’t enough, K&N backs the 69-7064TS with the industry-leading K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty. Whether it’s taking your sporty Nissan Altima coupe to the next level of performance or adding some get up and go to the family Nissan Altima sedan, K&N has what you’re looking for with the 69-7064TS Typhoon air intake system.
