Phil Burkart Preparing for NHRA Summit Racing Nationals in Las Vegas

In 2004, Phil Burkart went to Las Vegas just beginning his tenure as the full-time driver of the blue Checker, Schuck’s, Kragen Funny Car. He entered the Vegas event outside the POWERade top ten with a 2-3 record. When he left the track on Sunday night, his record was 6-3, he was in 5th place in POWERade points, and he had a trophy under his arm.

This week, Burkart will again bring his blue Checker, Schuck’s Kragen Monte Carlo to “The Strip” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but when he begins qualifying on Friday, it will be from a much different perspective. In 2004 and 2005, Burkart and his team were struggling when they arrived in Las Vegas. The big win in 2004 turned things around and sent Burkart on his way to the only top ten finish of his career, but last year a first round loss and a devastating engine explosion dropped Burkart out of the top ten.

In 2006, things are very different. Burkart has the same crew, the same car, and much of the same equipment. He sits 4th in the POWERade points, and has consistently managed to win at least one round at every race to this point.

“It’s hard to put your finger on what we’ve done, but things are different around here,” Burkart said. “We’ve maximized our good stuff, minimized our mistakes and made the most of what we’ve done. To this point, no one on this team thinks we’ve even hit our stride yet, but we’re hanging around near the top of the points and we’re beating some very good teams. We can still improve, and we plan to get a little bit better this weekend.”

Phil Burkart and his blue Checker, Schuck’s Kragen Funny Car team use K&N oil filters (HP-5001). The K&N filter is absolutely optimal for the demands that our race cars face, said Worsham Team Manager Bob Wilber.

So far this season, Burkart has recorded a win over defending POWERade champ Gary Scelzi, along with victories over past champions John Force and Cruz Pedregon. All he’s missing is a win over Tony Pedregon to have beaten every Funny Car champion since 1990, and this season is only four races old. If he lines up next to Tony Pedregon on Sunday April 9th in Las Vegas, you can place your bets on Burkart having no thought about his opponent or the other champs he has defeated, according to Wilber. Instead, Burkart will only be focusing on his job, and the race track.

“We manage to beat some very tough opponents around here, not just his year but the last couple of years too,” Burkart said. “To do that, you can’t be thinking its John Force over there, or Gary Scelzi, or whoever it is. You have to think of what the track will give you, and I have to think of what I can do to help the team as the driver.”

Burkart plans on doing the best possible job he can inside the car. “It’s more than just good reaction times, it’s also being ahead of the car, in control of things, and cool under pressure,” he said.

Czech A1 Grand Prix Team Celebrates End of Season Win in Shanghai, China

The City of Shanghai lies on the western coast of the Pacific Ocean and at the central section of the north-south coastline of China. The city is exotic and diverse and known for many things, and for the first time, the A1 Grand Prix celebrated the first season of the World Cup of Motorsport.

It is a racing Olympics of sorts, where 25 nations representing 80 percent of the world compete, driver against driver and country against country with high speed action at every turn. Unlike the Olympics, the competitors are professionals and the prize is money, a lot of money.

The A1 Grand Prix distribution for the top ten finishers in the Feature Race at each A1 Grand Prix of Nations is $1,000,000.  With an offer at each of the 11 rounds, the grand total is $11,000,000. It is divided from first place to tenth as follows: $300,000, $200,000, $150,000, $110,000, $80,000, $60,000, $40,000, $20,000 and $10,000.

A1 Team France took home first place and top dollar with $1,920,000 and A1 Team USA placed 17th with $190,000. Czech A1GP team driver Tomas Enge took home $510,000 and placed 8th among the drivers. Enge uses products from K&N Engineering on his vehicles.

The Czech A1GP team celebrated after the last checkered flag of the inaugural A1GP season when Enge crossed the line first in the feature race. The Czechs endured their share of bad luck during the course of the season, but were rewarded with a win at the end.

The team worked hard over the first weekend of April and focused on the race setup in the practices. It paid off on race day when Enge climbed from eighth to sixth in the spring race. The best was yet to come for the Czechs. In the feature race, Enge had a great start and immediately moved to fourth. There was a collision between Ireland and Indonesia and the whole field went to the pits for an early Safety Car Period.

Immediately after restart Enge left the pits second and put the leading Malaysian car under a lot of pressure. After a brave move on the outside of the first corner Enge moved to the front and never looked back. The Czech team moved to 12th place in overall standings.

“I am really happy for the whole team and all our fans,” said Enge. “Basically everything went according to the plan. I wanted to improve our position in the sprint but without taking too much risk. I gained two positions on the grid for the feature race and did a great start.”

The start was key Enge said, along with the superb work of his mechanics in the pits. “It really paid off that we spent all practices working on the race setup because my car was perfect in the feature race,” said Enge. “I’m really glad to have all the high end parts like K&N air filter in my car which makes car set up with its performance work perfectly at this race.”

The A1 Grand Prix is three days of on-track action and allows fans to interact with teams and drivers. The World Cup of Motorsport brings the excitement of international motorsport to fans across the globe.

The A1GP celebrated the end of its first season at the tallest hotel in the world on April 2nd at the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai’s business district. Teams, drivers and Chinese dignitaries gathered to watch the season long achievements.

A1 Team France was the first team to be awarded the World Cup of Motorsport. Alexandre Premat and Nicolas Lapierre, whose 13 wins up to the American race in Laguna Seca, were also presented with commemorative rings made from white gold and diamonds.

Sheikh Maktoum, A1 Grand Prix Chairman said the gathering was a celebration of all we have achieved in the first season. “The teams, drivers and all involved in A1GP, put on a magnificent show,” he said.

On October 1st Zandvoort, Netherlands will host the first race of the 2006-07 season.

K&N Custom Assembly Filter Kit for 2006 to 2016 Yamaha Raptor 700R Adds Performance

The 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 Yamaha Raptor 700R is all new from the ground up, and it is one serious sports quad. It is fuel-injected for consistent engine performance in a wide range of conditions, elevations and temperatures.

The Raptor's powerplant moves from 660cc to 686cc- making it the largest engine found on a true sport ATV. With a performance bike of this nature sometimes the manufacturers don't put the mounting assemblies in as they should. As riders hit jumps, bumps and very rough terrain it starts wearing on the mounting hardware.

K&N Engineering has a new custom assembly filter kit (YA-7006) for the 2006 to 2016 Yamaha YFM700R Raptor 700. For a performance bike of this nature, K&N mounted the billet intake to the air box. The K&N custom assembly filter kit also provides a larger mounting surface for the air filter which means more overall stability. This provides a smoother delivery along with a greater amount of air flow. The design acts as a velocity stack within the air box meaning adding performance is simple.

K&N's YA-7006  like all K&N air filters are designed to offer increased filtration and optimum air flow.

K&N invented the pleated cotton filter more than 35 years ago for the power sports market. This new filter is great for enthusiasts and off-road riders and racers alike. The innovative and unique filter design makes installation, changing and cleaning a breeze.

K&N's larger filtration area offers riders longer service intervals meaning more riding and less cleaning.

The YA-7006 will fit the following Yamaha YFM700R Raptor models:

2016 YAMAHA YFM700R RAPTOR SE 700

The K&N ATV filter is custom designed to fit into your existing factory air box. The drop in design means adding performance is simple. Simply remove the disposable air filter and replace it with the K&N filter, there is never any cutting or fitting required.

Unlike disposable filters, K&N air filters use a unique pleated design that captures airborne dirt particles while allowing a high volume of air flow. More air means more power and torque when it is needed. Particles cling to the outside of the filter and actually become part of the filtering media. The K&N (YA-6504) is also washable and reusable.

The (YA-6504) offers your Yamaha Rhino the air it needs to provide the 660 cc powerplant optimum horsepower. It also can increase throttle response and top end power on the workaholic ATV/UTV.

Steve Cohen Wins NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Super Comp

Racer Steve Cohen said it always feels good to win. He should know after his Super Comp victory in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series from Bradenton Motorsports Park on March 26th in Florida.

After three days of stiff competition Cohen’s 2005 dragster came through for the veteran racer who has a long list of wins. Cohen also races a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am in Super Gas.

The 48-year-old Dade City, Florida resident started Bracket racing in 1979 and never looked back. He’s won 10 Division Championships, 3 World Championships, 14  NHRA National Events and 12  IHRA National Events.

Cohen said he uses K&N Engineering’s Performance Gold Oil Filter (HP-5001) in his vehicles. It is designed with drilled safety wire holes for racing and a sturdy one-inch wrench nut to make oil filter removal quick and easy. “The K&N filter goes on quick and comes off quick,” he said. “I’ve never had one collapse.”

K&N’s Premium Performance Gold Oil filter has thick canister walls for extra strength and durability to fill a need for racers. The walls reduce the risk of damage from loose rocks and debris.

“The K&N filter works well,” Cohen said. “We’ve never had any problems.” Cohen’s daughter Shelby, 15, is racing in Stock Eliminator. “We’re a busy family,” he said. “I race, my daughter races and there is work in between. I also build a new car every year.”

Cohen’s next two races are coming up. “I have a divisional race in Georgia and then it’s off to the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series in Belle Rose, Louisiana,” he said.
