2008-2015 Harley-Davidson K&N Air Intake System Boosts Airflow, Horsepower, Torque

Caption

The K&N RK-3947 Air Intake System for Harley-Davidson Motorcycles features an oversized black, powder-coated aluminum backing plate for solid mounting.

Motorcycles from American manufacturer Harley-Davidson® may arguably be the most popular motorcycles on the road today. The company offers a wide assortment of models that include the Road Glide, Street Glide, Ultra Limited, Street Glide, Electra Glide Ultra Classic, the Road King and the three-wheel trikes –- the Freewheeler and Tri Glide Ultra Classic.

Caption

Everything needed to install the system is included in the kit. You only need a few basic hand tools and about 90 minutes and you will be back cruising down the road.

The Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide and Electra Glide models fall under the Touring family, also known as “dressers” or “Baggers.” The Road King has a “retro cruiser” look and is reminiscent of the big-twin models Harley-Davidson offered in the 1940s and 1950s that featured large clear windshields. Electra Glide is distinguished by its full front fairings and most include a fork-mounted fairing dubbed the “Batwing.” The Road Glide and Road Glide Ultra Classic includes a frame-mounted fairing, known as the “Sharknose” that also features a dual front headlight.

Touring Models in general include large saddlebags, rear coil-over air suspension and the only models to include full fairings with radios and CBs. All Touring Models share the same frame, which was first introduced with a Shovelhead motor in 1980 that have been carried forward with some improvements until 2009, when it was dramatically redesigned. It also has a unique frame that is differentiated from other Harley-Davidson motorcycle frames by its steering head located in front of the forks. Moreover, it was the first Harley® frame to rubber mount the drivetrain to separate the rider from the vibration of the big V-twin engine.

The Touring cycles went through a refreshing in 1994 when the oil tank was moved to a location under the transmission and the battery was moved inboard from the right saddlebag to under the seat. Another modification took place in 1997 with the frame changed to permit a larger battery to go under the seat and the seat height was lowered. Harley-Davidson introduced a new engine to power these motorcycles in 2007. The 96-cubic inch (1,570 cubic centimeters) Twin Cam was mated to a 6-speed transmission and delivered higher speed on the highway.

The company introduced the FLHX Street Glide in 2006 into the Touring family. It actually was the personal motorcycle of Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president and chief styling officer William (Willie) G Davidson. In 2008, the company added anti-lock braking systems, cruise control as factory installed option, a new six-gallon fuel tank and throttle-by-wire to the Touring models.

After installing the kit, fellow motorcyclists will know that you take performance seriously.

In 2009, Harley-Davidson made changes to the touring models with the introduction of a new frame, new swingarm, revised engine mounting system, 17-inch (430mm) front wheels for all models except the Road King Classic, and a 2-1-2 exhaust. All of this resulted in better load carrying capacity, better handling, a smoother engine, longer-range and less exhaust heat transmitted to the rider and passenger.

Also in 2009, Harley-Davidson debuted its first three-wheeled motorcycle since it discontinued the Servi-Car in 1973, the Tri-Glide Ultra Classic. A 103-cubic inch (1,690 cc) engine was also unveiled that exclusively powers the trike.

Harley-Davidson again made modifications to the touring motorcycles in 2014 that included a new 103CI high output engine, one handed easy open saddlebags and compartments, a new boom box Infotainment system with 4.3-inch or 6.5-inch screens, Bluetooth and made available GPS navigation and Sirius XM Radio, and USB ports and charging.

K&N offers the RK-3947 air intake system for these Harley-Davidson models. The system is guaranteed to increase horsepower and torque and replaces the stock air filter cleaner backing plate assembly.

The air filter inside the intake system is washable and reusable. K&N recommends checking and cleaning the filter once a year, depending on driving conditions. The filter features multiple layers of cotton gauze media that is treated with a special grade of filter oil so it captures and holds dirt particles. K&N offers air filter cleaning kits that cleanse the filter in seven easy steps so that it can be reused.

The air intake system features an oversized black, powder-coated aluminum backing plate for solid mounting to the cycle and built-in breathers that are designed to replace the external original equipment breathers. The breather directs pressure into the throttle body opening and not out into the air filter.

K&N backs the air filter with a unique Million Mile Limited Warranty® that promises that the filter will last for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles without needing replacement.

The RK-3947 air intake system is designed for the following H-D® models:

Utilizing technology that K&N has been perfecting since 1969, the 63-3089 intake system features an oversized, washable and reusable filter, an aluminum heat shield, HDPE intake tube, and silicone couplers for a simple install that is guaranteed to boost HP.

The Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Colorado were ranked eighth and ninth as the top selling pickup trucks of 2015. As many as 19,126 Colorados and 7,152 Canyons were sold.

Three engines are available to power the 2016 Colorado – a 2.5-liter I-4 V6, a 3.6-liter I-4 V6, and a Duramax® 2.8-liter turbo diesel. It includes a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch diagonal touchscreen that integrates with the Apple CarPlay to allow easy interaction with your iPhone features. The MyLink also includes Pandora, the streaming Internet radio station. The system responds to voice commands or control buttons mounted to the steering wheel. In addition, the MyLink includes a navigation system that offers turn-by-turn directions and a three-month trial of Sirius XM Travel Link.

The interior also exhibits an all-new multicolor driver information center that is standard on the LT and Z71 models. There are also four USB charging docks to make certain that your personal consumer electronics products are powered up.

Chevrolet includes its OnStar RemoteLink key fob with RemoteLink app, which is standard for five years and permits the owner/driver of the vehicle to remotely start the vehicle, lock and unlock the doors from anywhere, and activate the vehicle's horn and lights so that you can find it in a crowded parking lot. The car also includes a plethora of safety features including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and a rear-vision camera.

K&N 63-3089 intake system installed in engine bay of GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado

The K&N 63-3089 air intake kit is designed to replace the entire factory air intake system.

A 2.8-liter I-4 turbo diesel engine powers the Colorado and generates 181-horsepower at 3400 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm. Segment-first exhaust brakes use the engine compression to slow the truck down, which reduces the amount of conventional braking needed while driving downhill. The engine can feed off of B20 biodiesel and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Two gasoline engines are available. A 3.6-liter V6 has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 18 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway on the two-wheel drive models and 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway on the four-wheel drive. A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder delivers 200-horsepower and has an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 20 mpg in the city and 27mpg for the two-wheel drive models and 10 mpg city and 26 mpg on the highway for four-wheel drive models with an automatic transmission.

Standard features include a CornerStep rear bumper, Duralife™ brake rotors, and projector-beam headlamps with LED signature lighting. Optional equipment includes lane departure warning and forward collision alert, EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate, and IntelliLink with an 8-inch diagonal color touchscreen. The truck features the largest cargo box by volume on a midsized pickup. Upper tie downs are available and can be placed in 13 locations to help manage cargo of different shapes and sizes.

K&N offers the 63-3089 air intake kit for the Colorado and Canyon. The system boosts horsepower, improves throttle response and engine sound and is designed to significantly reduce air intake restriction that is inherit in the factory air intake system and smooth and straighten airflow. As a result, the engine will take in much more air than the factory air filter assembly allowed.

The K&N air intake system features a chrome topped K&N high-flow air filter and heat shield and installs into the original air box space. An aerodynamic, HDPE intake tube channels the air into the engine's throttle body for a power gain that can be guaranteed. The tube holds the factory mass air sensor and crank case vent hose. Installation is easy because the intake kit is designed to use the factory holes and mounting points and takes about 90 minutes. It works with OEM computer systems and will not void the vehicle warranty.

Back view of intake tube for K&N 63-3089 intake system for GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado

The intake tube has all the provisions needed to be a direct bolt on, including a slot for the mass airflow sensor and crankcase vent tube.

The air filter is washable and reusable, and lasts up to 100,000 miles before service is required, depending on driving conditions. The air filter performs so well because of the way it is constructed. It includes four layers of cotton gauze that has been treated with a special grade of filter oil that makes the strands of the cotton media very sticky. This permits it to capture and hold dirt particles. When it comes time to clean the filter, K&N offers air filter cleaning kits that can be used to clean the filter. Once cleaned, the filter can be re-oiled and put back into the vehicle.

K&N is so sure of the quality of its air filters, it backs them with a Million Mile Limited Warranty®.

The air intake includes a heat shield that protects the air filter from high engine temperature and actually reduces the temperature of the air entering the engine, which helps to boost horsepower. The tube is rotationally molded of interlaced high density polyethylene. This allows the precise shaping of the tube to reduce turbulence and accelerate airflow into the engine.

The K&N 63-3089 air intake kit is designed to fit the following vehicles:

2016 GMC CANYON 2.5L L4
2016 CHEVROLET COLORADO 2.5L L4
2015 GMC CANYON 2.5L L4
2015 CHEVROLET COLORADO 2.5L L4

You can view all the air intakes that K&N makes for these vehicles at the Air Intake Systems for the GMC Canyon and Air Intake Systems for the Chevrolet Colorado pages. 2016-2017 Honda and Acura Replacement Air Filter Is Designed to Increase Power

The K&N replacement air filter is washable and reusable and is designed to boost the horsepower and rate of acceleration of Honda Pilots and Ridgelines and Acura MDX engines.

The K&N replacement air filter is washable and reusable and is designed to boost the horsepower and rate of acceleration of Honda Pilots and Ridgelines and Acura MDX engines.

Japanese car manufacturer Honda is well known for its Accord and Civic sedans, but it also offers crossovers, SUVs, and mid-sized sport utility trucks. These include the Pilot, Ridgeline, and MDX.

The K&N replacement air filters come pre-oiled and ready to install right out of the box.

The K&N replacement air filters come pre-oiled and ready to install right out of the box.

Introduced in 2002, the Honda Pilot was targeted at the North American market and is the largest SUV Honda offers. It shares its platform with the Acura MDX, the Odyssey minivan and the Accord sedan.

It features unibody construction and independent suspension with integrated perimeter frame rails so that it handles like a car, but it also has the capability of towing and performing in light off-road applications.

An aluminum alloy 3.5-liter SOHC 24-valve VTEC V6 engine powered the first generation Pilot, which debuted in 2002 and was offered through March of 2008. The engine delivered 240-horsepower at 5400 rpm and 242 lb-ft (328 N-m) of torque at 4500 rpm. The engine is integrated with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Now in its third generation, which started in 2016, it is related to the Acura MDX and the Honda Ridgeline and is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that includes direct-injection and start-stop system. It is mated to one of two different transmissions –- a 6-speed automatic, which is standard, or a ZF 9-speed automatic. All-wheel-drive, the vehicle receives an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 19-mpg city, 27-mpg highway, and 22-mpg combined with the 6-speed transmission and 18-mpg city, 26-mpg highway, and 21-mpg combined with the 9-speed transmission.

The Honda Pilot has won a number of awards including:

  • 2003 through 2008 Car and Driver Ten Best
  • Intellichoice” Best Value of the Year”
  • Edmunds.com “Most Wanted SUV”
  • AMI Auto World “World Family Vehicle of the Year”
  • Kelley Blue Book “Top 50 Most Popular Cars”

Released for the first time in 2005, the Ridgeline is a front or all-wheel drive sports utility truck with unibody construction, dual-action tailgate, and 5-foot (1.5-meter) in-bed trunk, which can be extended to 6.6-feet (2-meters) with the tailgate down.

Designed and engineered by Honda Research & Development Americas, the first generation model (which was available from 2005 to August 2014) includes a suspension design that permits space for storage below the bed. The hood design permits the use of a cold air intake system that draws outside air from above and in front of the radiator. This configuration helps torque production during high engine temperature conditions and enables deep water fording.

The Variable Torque Management Four-Wheel Drive System offers front-wheel drive for dry pavement cruising conditions and engaged all-wheel drive when needed to improve stability or maneuverability. The vehicle is capable of medium duty off-road use.

A transverse mounted V6 engine powered the vehicle from 2006 through 2008 and a 3,471 cc (211.8-cubic inch V6 powered it from 2009 through 2014. Both engines included an aluminum block with overhead camshafts, 24-valve variable valve timing and lift electronic control system with 10.0:1 compression, programmed fuel injection system and variable length intake manifold. It achieved an EPA fuel economy rating of 15-mpg city, 20-mpg highway, and 17-mpg combined.

The Ridgeline is currently in its second generation. It retains features from the first generation model including the in-bed trunk, dual action tailgate, and rear 60/40 split bench seat.

The Honda Ridgeline has received a number of accolades including:

Unveiled in 2000, the Acura MDX is a midsize 4-door crossover SUV that seats seven. It is the first crossover SUV to have a third-row of seating and shares a platform with the Honda Pilot.

The First Generation MDX, which was manufactured from 2000 to 2006, is an automatic four-wheel drive system that engages during off the line acceleration and when wheel slippage is detected.

Two 3.5-liter V6 engines were available to power the vehicle. One of the engines generated 240-horsepower and 245 lb-ft (332 N-m) of torque and was used in 2001 and 2002; the other engine delivered 265-horsepower and 253 lb-ft (343 N-m) of torque and was used in 2003 through 2006.

Now in its third generation, which started in 2014, a 3.5-liter direct injected Earth Dreams V6 with Variable Cylinder Management powers the Acura MDX. A front-wheel drive model is offered in the U.S. market, but not in Canada, where only an all-wheel drive is available. EPA fuel economy rating on the front-wheel drive model is 20-mpg city, 28-mpg highway, and 23-mpg combined.

Acura claims that the exterior is more aerodynamic than previous models reducing the drag by 16%.

Optional safety features include Lane Keeping Assist System and Collision Mitigation Braking System. The standard Adaptive Cruise Control, which includes stop and go capability.

It too has won a number of awards including:

  • 2001 North American Truck of the Year
  • 2001 Car and Driver’s Best Luxury SUV
  • 2001 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year
  • 2007 Top Safety Pick
  • 2010 U.S. News and World Report’s #1 Luxury Midsize SUV

K&N offers the 33-5041 replacement air filter for 2016 Honda Pilot and Acura MDX and 2017 Honda Ridgeline and Acura MDX.

The air filter is designed to improve horsepower and acceleration and will last up to 50,000 miles before it has to be cleaned, depending on driving conditions.

It lasts longer than other air filters because of its construction. The filter includes four layers of cotton gauze that have been treated with a special grade of filter oil. The oil makes the cotton strands so sticky they can capture and hold dirt particles or other impurities.

K&N offers air filter cleaning kits that are specially formulated to clean the filter and re-oil it, so it can be used again and again. K&N has no doubt the air filter will perform as promised and backs it with a Million Mile Limited Warranty®. The warranty claims that the air filter will last for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 million miles.

The filter works with OEM vehicle electronics and will not void the vehicle warranty. Finally, the air filter is designed to replace the factory air filter. Simply remove the used factory filter from the existing factory air box and drop in the new K&N air filter.

The K&N 33-5041 Replacement Air Filter fits the following vehicles:

2017 HONDA RIDGELINE 3.5L V6 F/I - All
2017 ACURA MDX 3.5L V6 F/I - All
2016 HONDA PILOT 3.5L V6 F/I - All
2016 ACURA MDX 3.5L V6 F/I – All

GM Generation III LS Series Engine Air Intake Systems from K&N

The General Motors Generation III engine series (often referred to as the LS engines) was designed to be manufactured in a range of different displacements so that it could be utilized in a variety of passenger cars and light trucks. It debuted in the 1997 model year C5 Corvette as the all-aluminum 5.7 L LS1 V8. For the following model year the LS1 replaced the LT1 350 CID small-block in Firebirds and Camaros. After which, an iron-block version of the Gen III V8 appeared in full size light trucks and SUVs.

The Gen III was an all-new design with little more than the bore spacing in common with the original Chevrolet small block V8, first introduced in 1955, though its architecture was clearly influenced by the earlier design. The Gen III engine was smaller and lighter, it made more horsepower per cubic inch, created fewer emissions, and got better fuel mileage than the Chevy 350 it replaced. Changes like a new firing order made the Gen III engine run smoother than its predecessor, individual coils for each spark plug meant that ignition could be optimized by cylinder, rotating mass was decreased for faster revving and a host of other changes that not only made the Gen III more powerful than the LT1 350 small block, but also out-perform some four-valve DOHC engines.

We've selected five versions of the Gen III engine to examine. These aren't all the highest performing versions, but rather provide an overview of how widespread the integration of the Gen III engine was across almost all GM nameplates and how adding a K&N intake to them can help bring your power numbers up.

K&N air intake system for Gen III LS1 engines

K&N air intake system installed in a 1997 Camaro LS1 adds an estimated 18.3 rear-wheel horsepower.

Gen III LS1

When introduced in the 1997 Corvette, the LS1 was rated at 345 horsepower. After ongoing development changes to the intake and exhaust manifolds raised output to 350 horsepower in 2001. The aluminum block LS1 was original equipment in the Corvette from 1997 through 2004. After one year of exclusivity in the Corvette, the Gen III motor replace the 350 small block in the 1998 through 2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula, Trans Am, and Chevrolet Camaro (GM F Body) cars, which produced up to 325 horsepower. K&N make filters for all LS1 applications. For example, K&N air intake system 57-3010-1 installed in a 1997 Camaro LS1 (without Ram Air or Traction Control) adds an estimated 18.3 rear-wheel horsepower at 5331 rpm.

Applications:
1997-2004 Chevrolet Corvette
1998-2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula, Trans Am
1998-2002 Chevrolet Camaro

57-3054 K&N air intake system for Gen III LS6 engines

An LS6 powered CTS-V showed an increase of an estimated 19.1 horsepower with the installation of a K&N air intake system.

Gen III LS6

If you like the LS1, then you probably love the LS6. The LS6 was a high-performance version of the LS1 engine that retained the same 5.7 L displacement. Changes included a higher flow rate intake manifold and MAF-sensor, a new camshaft with higher lift and longer duration, an increased compression ratio of 10.5:1, sodium filled valves, and an oiling system better suited to high cornering speeds. The initial 2001 LS6 produced 385 horsepower, but was upgraded in the 2002 model year (through 2004 models) to produce 405 horsepower. A 400 horsepower version of the LS6 was available in the Cadillac CTS -V in 2004 and 2005. The LS6 shares its basic architecture with the GM LS1 engine, but other design changes were made such as windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength and bay to bay breathing, an intake manifold and MAF-sensor with higher flow, a camshaft with higher lift and more duration, a higher compression ratio of 10.5:1, sodium filled valves, and a revised oiling system better suited to high lateral acceleration. A 57-3054 K&N air intake system can add even more power to your LS6 powered CTS-V. K&N's chassis dyno testing showed an estimated increase of 19.1 rear-wheel horsepower over a stock Caddy.

Applications:
2001-2004 Corvette Z06
2004-2005 Cadillac CTS V-Series

Gen III LR4

Going from the LS6 to the LR4 is a bit like going from wild to mild, but the LR4 demonstrates the incredible versatility GM engineers designed into the Gen III family of engines. The LR4, more popularly known as the Vortec 4800 is a Generation III small block V8 engine specifically for truck applications. Displacement is 4.8 L (293 CID) with a slightly over-square configuration combining a 3.78 inch bore with a 3.27 inch stroke. The replacement for the 5.0L 5000 L30, the LR4 is the smallest of the Generation III truck engines. When introduced in 1999, the LR4 engine produced 255 horsepower while the 2000 through 2004 models produced 270-285 horsepower, based on application. For the 2005-2006 model years output was further increased to 285 horsepower, about the same SAE Net output as a 1969 Camaro Z/28. If you're looking for Z/28 like performance for your 2006 Chevy Tahoe consider the K&N 57-3050 air intake system which has been proven on K&N's chassis dynos to add an estimated nearly 12 additional rear-wheel horsepower at 5367 rpm.

LR4 applications:

Gen III LM7

The 5.3L LM7 V-8 was the first application of the Gen III/LS engine configurations available in a light truck. Specific modifications included a lighter valvetrain for reduced friction and increased efficiency, a steel camshaft reduced mass while maintaining truck-grade durability, steel roller rockers were added for stiffness, allowing for higher engine speeds with reduced vibrations. Hydraulic roller lifters reduced friction for better fuel economy and wear resistance, while the Iridium-tipped OEM spark plugs extend claimed plug life to 100,000 miles, while the coolant maintains its properties for 150,000 miles. Scheduled maintenance was limited to oil changes. The LM7 was introduced in the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, where the engine produced 270 horsepower. Refinements to the design resulted in the 2000-2003 engines producing 285 horsepower. For the final versions, available from 2004 through 2007, the LM7 engine produced 295 horsepower, no doubt aided by the addition of aluminum cylinder heads.

There were several variations of the LM7 made available. In 2002, the L59 was produced, which was the flexible fuel version of the LM7. Then in 2003 the LM4 became available, which was the LM7 with an aluminum engine block, making the engine all-aluminum (block and heads). Finally, in 2005, the L33 was first offered which was also an aluminum block and had other piston/cylinder head options that enabled more power creation. These Gen III versions of the small block remained available until 2007, when they were phased out. With its outstanding balance of torque, horsepower, fuel efficiency, low maintenance and low cost of ownership made the most widely applied of GM Powertrain's Vortec V-8s. And its performance can be improved further, like with the 2007 GMC Sierra 1500, which when fitted with the K&N air intake system 57-3058 added an estimated 17.6 rear wheel horsepower on K&N's chassis dynamometer.

LM7 applications:
2002-2005 Cadillac Escalade 2WD
2002-2006 Chevrolet Avalanche
2003-2007 Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana

Air intake for Gen III LQ4 engines

Count on a K&N cold air intake to add an estimated 20.3 horsepower to your 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.

Gen III LQ4

Like the LM7, the Gen III LQ4 was developed specifically as an engine for light trucks and SUVs. Commonly referred to as the Vortec 6000, it was one of the most popular of all the Gen III engines. Its displacement is 5.97 L or 364 CID from a 4.00-inch bore and a 3.622-inch stroke. It features a cast iron block with aluminum cylinder heads. The only exception was the 1999 and 2000 model year engines which featured cast iron heads. The LQ4 produces 300 horsepower to 325 horsepower, depending upon application. Other features shared with the LM7 include a steel camshaft, steel roller rockers, Iridium spark plugs, and long-life coolant. K&N can help you add hauling power to your LQ4. For example, a K&N 57-3031-1 air intake system added an estimated 20.3 rear-wheel horsepower to a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.

2015 to 2016 Can-Am Maverick UTV Air Intake Kit Boosts Horsepower and Helps Protect Engine

K&N 63-1135 performance intake kit for Can-Am Maverick UTV

The K&N 63-1135 performance intake kit is designed to replace the factory air filter and intake housing of specific Can-Am Maverick UTV models.

One of the most popular motorsports today is racing all-terrain vehicles. However, these vehicles are also ideal for recreational rides through forest and mountain areas, and through streams and rough terrain. Moreover, they have a more practical use providing assistance performing tasks on farms and construction sites as well as other work-related activity in harsh environments.

K&N 63-1135 performance intake kit with HDPE tube for Can-Am Maverick UTV

The HDPE tube helps to straighten out the air entering the engine, thereby boosting power to the tires.

One of the most popular manufacturers of these vehicles is Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), a Canadian company that makes ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and Spyder Roadsters for Can-Am.

One of the most popular Can-Am side-by-side UTVs is the Maverick, which includes the MAX X, MAX, and Maverick.

First introduced in 2013, the Can-Am Maverick 1000R is a sports utility style UTV that is equipped with a 976 cc, liquid cooled, V-Twin, SOHC, 4-Stroke Engine, dual exhaust and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). It also features double A-arm suspension in the front, independent torsional trailing A-arms suspension in the rear and ground clearance of 13-inches (33cm). In addition, there are front dual hydraulic disc brakes on the front wheels and dual hydraulic disc brakes on the rear.

The Rotax® engine generates 101-horsepower and sits mid-vehicle in a sport-tuned frame specifically designed for the Maverick. The steel frame assists in providing great traction, agility and handling. Yet it is more rigid than other side-by-side UTVs.

It also features removable free-standing seats; adjustable driver seat, and tilt steering; 2-inch diameter, steel, ROPS-approved cage; 31.6-liters of cockpit storage; multifunction digital gauge; 12-inch centerless cast-aluminum wheels; digitally encoded security system; front and rear Fox Podium X Performance 2.0 HPG piggyback shocks with compression and preload adjustments. This permits the driver to adjust the ride to whatever the surface.

Debuting in 2014, the Can-Am Maverick MAX 1000R XRS DPS is a sports utility style UTV that is powered by a 976cc, liquid cooled, V-Twin, SOHC, 4-Stroke Engine and also includes a CVT transmission. It features a double A-arm front suspension and rear independent suspension and Fox Podium X Performance 2.0 HPG piggyback shocks and offers 14-inches of travel front and rear. It relies on dual hydraulic disc brakes front and rear. It rests on 12-inch aluminum beadlock wheels and also includes analog/digital gauge, and custom steering wheel with brushed-aluminum center

The Maverick 1000R X ds includes a Turbo engine that generates 131-horsepower with better torque and includes larger injectors and increased boost pressure. A larger Donaldson airbox is now closer to the engine to improve airflow and an electronic throttle-by-wire system works in conjunction with a 54mm Bosch throttle body to help produce smooth delivery even if the driver's foot is bouncing on and off the pedal due to rough terrain. Its 88-inch wheelbase supplies a better ride at higher speeds and in tight cornering. Despite its longer wheelbase, the X ds has a short turning radius for precise and agile maneuverability and offers 16-inches of travel.

K&N 63-1135 performance intake kit installed in a Can-Am Maverick UTV

Once installed in your Can-Am Maverick, the K&N 63-1135 looks great and protects the engine from harmful contaminants.

The Maverick 1000R X MR includes air control suspension with Fox air assist HPG piggyback shocks, analog/digital gauge, and 14-inch ITP cast aluminum wheels. The CVT transmission system can be calibrated for wet terrain and conditions. A dedicated drain plug is included in the cover and can be used to remove water from the CVT housing. The CVT intake is high on the chassis so that the machine can perform in wet riding conditions. The CVT exhaust and engine air intake is up as high as possible on the vehicle to avoid muddy, wet conditions. Tri-mode dynamic power steering (DPS) offers variable steering assistance and is designed to supply less help at high speed and more help at low speed. Moreover, the driver can program his or her preference of three modes –- Hi, Med, and Lo. DPS equipped models include Visco-Lok QE calibration to give a quicker engagement of the front differential. It transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping wheel automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull.

K&N 63-1135 performance intake kit open view of air filter for Can-Am Maverick UTV

The filter is located under an aluminum cover to help keep it out of the elements. Even if some dirt gets to the filter, the oiled media will stop it before entering the engine.

K&N offers the 63-1135 air intake kit for several models of the Maverick. The intake increases horsepower and improves throttle response and engine sound. It is designed to replace the entire factory air intake system and includes a free-flow high-density polyethylene tube. It is designed to reduce inherit restrictions in the factory intake and smooth and straighten airflow.

The side-by-side UTV air intake kit comes with a black rubber topped K&N high flow air filter in an embossed air box that installs into the space for the original factory air box under the hood panel. The kit also includes an aerodynamically engineered intake tube that goes into the engine's throttle body to ensure power gain. The intake tube is designed to incorporate the factory crank case vent hose. The system can be installed in about 90 minutes utilizing the vehicle's existing factory mounting points. All you need is a few simple hand tools.

Since the filter is washable and reusable it can simply be cleaned, re-oiled using the 99-5000 air filter cleaning kit and reinstalled in the intake.
