Ford F-150 Pickup Serves as Marketing Platform for Car Products

2016 Ford F-150 with Metra Electronics product unveiled at the 2016 SEMA show

The retail trade can be intense for the manufacturers who make products and the stores that sell them. Competition between companies is expected to be tough. However, every once in awhile someone comes up with a way to benefit several companies who are not competing with one another, but who target the same market.

One such person is Jonathon Brothers, Regional Sales Manager for Metra Electronics, a company that manufactures products for the 12-volt industry. Brothers travels to shops in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas selling Metra products.

“I visit car audio stores, truck accessory stores, automotive performance dealers, and marine and powersports stores. I show off new innovative products and provide dealer support and training,” he explained.

His employer, Metra Electronics, based in Hollyhill, Florida, manufactures light bars, installation dash kits for aftermarket radios, backup sensors and cameras, wiring, connectors and more.

Brothers came up with the idea of creating a demonstration vehicle that showcases products from different companies that don’t compete with one another and target the same stores and consumers. Having been in the industry for more than 12 years, he is familiar with these companies and the products they sell.

“We all have a similar dealer base, but we don’t compete with each other as far as products are concerned,” said Brothers. “So I thought of coming up with a vehicle that showcases everyone’s products to help each other out.”

Brothers brainstormed the idea, selected a few companies to work with as well as some of the products they offer and he decided that a 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck would serve as the perfect platform.

The rear bodyguard bumper is home to an array of Heise LED lights and a massive Monster hook

“I had an idea of how I wanted the truck to be built,” he said. “So I reached out to Keg Media, a company that does vehicle renderings, told them exactly what products I wanted in and on the truck and they did a rendering.”

Brothers then used the rendering to sell the concept to other manufacturers who he thought would want to participate in the project. It wasn’t long before he had commitments from Metra, K&N Engineering, Brenthel Industries, Sony, Magnaflow, Bodyguard Bumpers, Heise Lighting, M-Racks, Fiber Tech Performance, Undercover, Rhino Racks, Monster Hooks, Addictive Desert Designs, DropStar Wheels and Hercules Tires.

Brenthel contributed a Baja suspension kit, a pre-runner kit with a 4.5-inch lift that provides 12-inches of wheel travel and widens the stance of the truck 3-inches on each side. King 3.0 coilovers and upper and lower pre-runner control arms were used for the front set up. The rear suspension includes Deaver leaf springs and King 2.5 piggyback shocks.

K&N provided a 71-2591 Blackhawk induction air intake system that includes a free-flowing, mandrel-bent aluminum tube, a washable and reusable air filter that has an oil-free synthetic filter media that can be used for up to 100,000 miles before cleaning is necessary, depending on driving conditions, and a heat shield that blocks hot air from the engine compartment from getting into the intake. The intake system offers an estimated 11.39-horsepower boost on the F-150 EcoBoost engine.

The K&N 712591 Blackhawk air intake is one of many products showcased in the F-150.

Magnaflow contributed a cat back performance exhaust system to help the 5.0 liter Coyote engine exhale a little better. Bodyguard Bumpers up front and rear help to give the truck a meaner stance and provide better approach and departure angles.

Heise LED lighting 30-inch blackout series light bar, cube fog lights, and spotlights, and flush mount cubes that all fit into Bodyguard front and rear bumpers help to light the way. In addition, a Heise 50-inch LED blackout series light bar for the M-Racks stealth roof rack and four LED single row lights for the four corners of the roof and a 40-inch Slim line on the rear ensure that Jon is never left in the dark. Metra also supplied their newest Turbo Touch installation kit for a Sony 6.4-inch Media Receiver with CarPlay.

Just like the rear bumper, the front is filled with Heise lights and Monster Hook shackles

Fiber Tech Performance donated a Ram air hood and Brothers added Heise LED lights into the hood vents. An Undercover Ridgelander bed cover tilts up via a Metra Electronics install bay motorized linear actuator and control module for easy bed access. For added storage capability, a Rhino Racks Xtray was mounted seamlessly to the Ridgelander bed cover along with a mountain trail bike rack system.

Monster Hooks front Reaper forged shackles and rear mini shackles attach to the Bodyguard bumpers, while Addictive Desert Designs Baja XTR fenders and bedsides offer added wheel clearance.

Speaking of the wheel and tire package, Jon had a set of DropStar wheels wrapped in Hercules Terra Trac M/T tires from ATD wheels.

Extreme Off-Road in Katy, Texas, was responsible for the majority of the build. Brothers noted that he and six employees of Extreme Off-Road worked for one month straight on the vehicle after hours from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. some nights to have things ready in time for the SEMA show.

While this may be Jon's daily driver, he is still confident in the products to get a little wild

“We chose Extreme Off-Road to build the truck because they are a dealer for the manufacturers who supplied all of these amazing products; they built a total of nine SEMA vehicles that included Metra products and have a great reputation for building some of the nicest show trucks in the industry,” said Brothers.

Brothers, who lives in Houston, Texas, has control of the vehicle. In fact, it is his daily driver as well as his business vehicle.

The truck was featured in DUB Magazine’s LFTDxLVLD booth outside the South Hall at the 2016 SEMA show. It will be exhibited at many Texas and surrounding states’ events including the Austin Texas Heatwave Show, DUB Show Tour, the Keystone Big Show, Meyer Distributing Show, and the Lifted Truck Nationals. It will also appear in LFTDxLVLD magazine.

The truck has been built for off-road driving, but also for practical everyday use visiting dealers.

“I’ve taken it out and have had a lot of fun with it in the desert during our photo shoots,” Brothers concluded.

Dale Martin and Mountain Motion Media snapped the pictures.

Andrew Carlson races an off-road track at a TORC series event

Andrew Carlson battles the off-road track at a TORC series event.

K&N Filters will be sponsoring Carlson Moto as it pursues professional racing in the International Series of Champions (ISOC) national snocross series and the Off-Road Championship (TORC) off-road truck racing.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with K&N Filters,” said Carlson Moto Team Owner and Manager Chris Carlson. “They have an impressive history as a market leader in filtration and we’ve been using their products for many years with great success.”

“We continually look for partners that can help us get to the next level,” added Taylor Carlson Schroer, Marketing Manager for Carlson Moto. “We have been a lifetime user of K&N products. Their legacy in motorsports and racing ties into what we do on a day-to-day basis. We’ve seen them at races and it feels like a great fit. We’re really excited to represent K&N. We think we have a core advantage being a year round team. The demographics of both series is very similar and we think we can introduce more snowcross enthusiasts to K&N products.”

Andrew is at the highest level in Snocross (pro open) and three years ago he started racing off-road trucks. We committed to it fulltime two years ago and now race professionally year round.”

2016 has proven to be a productive year for Carlson Moto. Andrew achieved the team’s first win in The Off-Road Championship series at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota, the Carlson’s hometown track, in July. The RK-3944 and RK-3944B Intakes Offer Up Power Gains in Harley® Sportsters

K&N RK-3944 Intake

The RK-3944 intake is available in chrome (shown) or black (RK-3944B)

If you’re ready for a bit more ‘sport’ in your Harley-Davidson® Sportster, the K&N RK-3944 Street Metal Series high-flow air intake is an easy choice for bolt on power. The intake comes in two versions, the chrome RK-3944 and the matte black RK-3944B. After you decide which version will best match the looks of your ride, all that’s left is to bolt on the intake and feel the performance.

The horsepower gains are significant whether you ride an 883cc or 1200cc Sportster. K&N’s dynamometer testing has verified an estimated gain of well over 4 horsepower on a 2014 XL883. On a 2009 1200 Sportster, the estimated gain was over 8.5 horsepower with the RK-3944. Of course, horsepower enhancement will vary depending on the individual bike, but those are healthy gains for an affordable and easy to install system. The intake mounts via a custom aluminum backing plate that bolts directly to the throttle body.

K&N RK-3944 Intake installed on a Sportster

The RK-3944 compliments the overall look of any Sportster

Not only are the horsepower gains with the RK-3944 impressive, the torque numbers with the intake in place are higher across the entire RPM range for both tested bikes. Torque increases result in better throttle response and all-important roll-on power. All of the performance increase data aside, what’s important is that your Harley® will be more fun to ride with the RK-3944 allowing it to breathe more freely.

Of course, K&N filters also offer up extremely effective filtration. The oiled, cotton gauze filter media is a proven performer in trapping and holding airborne dirt, dust, and contaminants. The added bonus is that the filter element is fully washable and reusable putting an end to the need for purchasing and trashing countless paper filters. When cleaning is needed, use the K&N 99-5000 filter cleaning kit to conveniently restore air flow efficiency.

K&N RK-3944 Harley intake parts

Everything that is needed for installation is included in the box

Another accessory product that is an option when using the RK-3944 is the K&N HD-0800DK pre-filter, which adds another layer of protection to the intake. The K&N Drycharger is a silicone treated, polyester wrap that is made to cover K&N air filters. This product is especially useful if you ride in wet conditions, since it limits the amount of water that can get to the air filter element.

If your Harley Sportster is listed below, the RK-3944 or RK-3944B are for you.

Abel Ibarra Joins Prime Motivation on High School Campaign

Prime Motivation, Abel Ibarra, NHRA, Elsmere HIgh School

This famed K&N sponsored vehicle along with the driver Abel Ibarra will be at Elsmere High School.

Abel Ibarra started working on his legendary Mazda R100 dragster more than 20 years ago. When he found the car in 1995, it was halfway built, needed a makeover, and a caring car builder to bring out its best.

Ibarra wanted to make that little Mazda into the fastest street car anyone had ever seen.

“My whole goal was to build this little car into the ultimate street racer car,” Ibarra said. “I was going to go out there and kill all the V-8s.”

He achieved his goal. The car is part of the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, California. But his path to legendary status was not exactly the one Ibarra planned. Ibarra turned his Mazda into one of the fastest dragsters in the history of the NHRA. He wants to share his experiences with the next generation of car builders and drivers when he joins Prime Motivation and its tour of high schools.

Ibarra made a drastic change to his Mazda R100. Instead of using a supercharged engine, he decided to go with a turbocharger. It was a bold and unconventional move, but one that made all the difference in the car.

“He’s a pioneer. He doesn’t follow people,” said Bill Montgomery, Marketing and Business Development with Prime Motivation. “He’s a leader. He’s very easy to approach.”

The first time Ibarra raced his Mazda R100, it wasn’t all that impressive. He took it to an event in Bakersfield, California and it didn’t perform anywhere near where he had expected. It was fast, Ibarra said he ran an 11.20 second on his first run and another at 10.80 seconds.

“It was breaking up really bad,” Ibarra said. “When I went out and made another attempt and ran a 10.8. That got a lot of people’s attention. I wasn’t even launching the car. It was breaking up.”

On the drive home, he stopped at an In-N-Out in Bakersfield. He made some adjustments on the car and decided to rent out a track in Palmdale to make some more runs. In Palmdale, the car broke the 10-second barrier. Ibarra said he made runs in the 8-second range. The rest is history.

Ibarra took the car all over the country, breaking records and winning events. Now the car is part of the NHRA museum. He has two other Mazdas that he races now. But he will bring his Mazda R100 to the students at Elsmere High School to talk about how to make a career out of drag racing.

“It’s a great opportunity to go to the schools,” Ibarra said, “show the kids if you study, stay in school, or if you follow a career in cars, what you can achieve.”

Montgomery said the focus of his Prime Motivation campaign is to find ways to motivate high school students and teachers into learning more about the automotive industry.

“These kids nowadays, they feel like they are entitled, because of their cell phones, they feel like there is a ‘beam-me-up-Scotty’ and all of a sudden some money is going to fall out of the sky,” Montgomery said. "Abel used the car and what he’s done, he can now talk to these kids about work. You got to continue to do the work, like I did.”

Ibarra said he wants to let students know there are plenty of opportunities in auto racing and motorsports.

“My main thing is to talk and communicate with the kids and let them know they have different options and how important education is,” Ibarra said. “Especially nowadays, without a career and education, you’re not going to get anywhere. Any kind of communication that I can have with them, even if you only reach a couple, you’ve done a great thing. Just to try to communicate with as many of them as I can.”

Montgomery added that the opportunities in the automotive industry are endless. Exposing students to those opportunities is beneficial to companies in the automotive industry.

“Nobody knows about the automotive industry anymore,” Montgomery said. “We are trying to bring education not only to the students, but to the teachers. When we go, these teachers get excited about stuff. Sometimes, the teachers end up talking to Abel more than the students. They are so intrigued."

“Everybody’s pushing the four-year college. The cities and the states, their mandate goal is 100 percent on college. I’m all for that, but that’s not reality. That’s a big problem. That’s why we need to be on campus. We’re not going to get 100-percent. We’re just not going to get there.”

Ibarra said the level of interest from the students is always high. They can also relate to Ibarra, because at one time, he was a student looking for a way to succeed in motorsports.

“They are always interested,” Ibarra said. “What they find amazing is wow, you really did grow up in the hood. You grew up in the hood and you know how to do all of this. They definitely want to know, how did you start, what did you do? They do get a big interest. I was really good in school, I got good grades, and I wanted to become an engineer and take it to the next step. I even went to USC on a Mechanical Engineering scholarship. You can do lots of things, you just got to put the effort into it.”

The really cool part is that you can send a message with your desire for this K&N item to more than one potential gift giver, or send different requests to different people. We make it simple!

Here are some gift of the most popular ideas from the team at K&N:

Air Intakes

Our number one requested item is an air intake. K&N air intakes come in different series to address particular applications, but all are guaranteed to increase horsepower in your vehicle. The concept behind all of them is that air flow restrictions can exist between the air filter and engine. K&N air intake kits virtually eliminate restriction in the air path by replacing the filter and air path to the engine.

K&N 77 Series is a metal tube air intake kit for trucks and SUVs

77-series metal cold air intake systems for trucks and SUV’s combine both performance and style

The K&N 57-series air intake kits represent a dramatic performance improvement over a K&N OEM replacement filter alone. The 57-series use non-metallic rotomolded intake tubes that can reduce air temperature and decrease sound, while driving a massive amount of air into your engine, which adds power.

The K&N 77-series metal air intake kits combine outstanding performance and style for trucks and SUVs. Many K&N air intake owners opt for the visual appeal of these systems. These K&N 77-series air intakes come finished with grey and polished intake tube finishes.

K&N 63-series high performance air intake kits are a sister product to our 57-series kits. Our 63-series kits are truly state-of-the-art. We start with the largest conical shaped air filter we can fit into the engine compartment, while retaining the use of factory holes and mounting points. This extra filter size provides even more airflow at lower restriction than a standard K&N OEM replacement filter that is limited to the size of the factory air box.

K&N 69-series air intake systems are built for performance and show. This free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system was designed specifically for sport compact performance vehicles. These air intakes systems come with a high-flow conical air filter designed to provide increased surface area and dust-filtering capacity.

K&N's Blackhawk Induction air intake systems are easy to install and guaranteed to add horse

K&N Blackhawk systems feature a black powdercoated intake tube combined with a Dryflow air filter

K&N 71-series Blackhawk Induction™ air intake systems are designed for select gas and diesel trucks and muscle cars and are all guaranteed to add power and responsiveness. K&N Blackhawk Induction™ air intakes feature a black powdercoated air intake tube and reusable non-oiled synthetic air filter for excellent airflow and engine protection. K&N's Blackhawk Induction™ air intake systems are easy to install and produce a killer engine sound.

To make your appeal to your Secret Santa that much more enticing, K&N is offering a $25 rebate on any air intake system purchased at knfilters.com until December 31, 2016. See the rebate page for more details.

Air Filters

Our number one gift given are K&N air filters, which are available for most automobile and light trucks, motorcycles and snowmobiles, personal watercraft, and even chain saws and other yard equipment.

K&N automotive replacement air filters are manufactured for just about any car and truck on the road. K&N automotive stock replacement air filters are manufactured with an oiled cotton filter media that’s both washable and reusable. These filters are designed to achieve high air flow while maintaining filtration levels critical to ensure long engine life. K&N replacement air filters are backed by the K&N 10-year/Million Mile Limited Warranty.

K&N motorcycle and ATV stock replacement air filters are also manufactured from an oiled cotton media for high air flow and outstanding engine protection, keeping dust and dirt out of your engine and on the outside where it belongs. K&N motorcycle and ATV stock replacement air filters have a long service life and when dirty are simple to clean.

The K&N Washable Cabin Air Filter advanced synthetic filter media grabs and holds dust particle

Replace your vehicle's stock cabin air filter with a washable and reusable K&N cabin air filter

The K&N washable cabin air filter is the first of its kind designed to replace your vehicle's stock cabin air filter with a washable and reusable version that cleans and freshens incoming air, an often overlooked component to driver and passenger comfort and safety.

K&N also manufactures many direct replacement air filter elements for small industrial engines, utility lawn and garden units, air compressors, generators, chain saws, and more. Most are made with synthetic air filter media which can be cleaned with K&N synthetic air filter cleaner and reused again and again.

For boaters and owners of personal watercraft, K&N Marine Flame Arrestors are a popular choice as they are both marine approved per the SAE J1928 standard as well as being washable and reusable, and designed to improve horsepower and torque.

Other Great Choices

If you’d rather give or receive something soft and wearable, K&N has a full-line of hats, t-shirts, jackets, socks, banners, signs, patches and more.

In the hat department, K&N offers three choices including one with the K&N logo encircled by an oval, K&N performance filters logo, and what’s seen in winner’s circles across the globe – the K&N racing hat.

If you think the hat list was comprehensive, consider the K&N t-shirt lineup. There are 19 separate and unique designs on black, white, grey, and red backgrounds, plus two additional designs in long-sleeve Ts in black and white.
