K&N and Total Chaos Fabrication Take on the Sahara Desert in a One of a Kind Race

The Sahara Desert is one of the harshest environments on earth

The Sahara Desert is one of the harshest environments on earth

Imagine driving across the Sahara Desert with little more than a compass, a black and white hand drawn map from the 1960s, and a teammate. Every direction, for thousands of miles, all you can see is sand, dunes, and absolutely no sign of life. That is what the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles is about.

Started in 1990, the Rallye Aicha des Gazelles du Maroc, as it is officially called, is a rally race held in the southeastern portion of Morocco, Africa, along the Algerian border. The race, put on by Maienga, an international event management agency, is only open to women. Their goal is to raise money to support a team of doctors to provide medical attention to the remote regions of Morocco.

They are extremely concerned with environmental responsibility and limiting their impact during the event. Some of the registration fee even goes to an organization that provides carbon dioxide emissions offsetting, so there is practically zero impact on the environment. The event is traditionally held in the months of March and April, while the weather is still relatively cool. There are three unique classes of vehicles; 4x4 (for 4x4 trucks), Crossover (for SUVs, vans, and crossovers), and Motorcycle (for motorcycles and quads). Other than that, the only criterion is your own determination, according to the Rallye’s website.

Being an all women race, there are often a wide range of participants from all over the globe and from all walks of life. One of the teams consisted of a pair of Southern California women, Chrissy Beavis and Nicole Pitell-Vaughan. Chrissy is a rally car co-driver and has worked with some of the best in the industry. Nicole Pitell-Vaughan owns Total Chaos Fabrication in Corona, California. Total Chaos fabricates suspension parts for a variety of off-road specific applications. So both women are no stranger to driving off-road, but this would take them to the next level.

K&N has been a sponsor of Nicole and Total Chaos for a number of years.

“I only work with companies that I truly believe in,” explained Nicole, “K&N has been making filters since the ’60s and they build some of the best air filters around. They were one of the first calls I made when I decided to go on this adventure.”

To say we were thrilled that she would be taking our product into one of the most inhospitable environments known to man would be an understatement.

Nicole explained that the sand in the Moroccan Sahara is finer than any sand she had ever encountered before. This meant the truck needed an air filter that would offer excellent airflow while keeping out as much dirt and dust as possible. K&N has always claimed that our products really do work and this would be a test of that statement. Nicole and Chrissy would be driving the Total Chaos 2014 Toyota Tacoma 4x4, affectionately dubbed the “Morocco Taco”. We outfitted the Taco with a K&N 33-2281 replacement air filter. This helped ensure that the TRD supercharged 4.0-liter engine received the clean air it needed to work properly. Nicole explained that they were allowed an hour before they left the camp in the morning and an hour when they got to the next camp to work on their vehicles.

The only navigation aids you can use on the Rallye are a compass and an outdated map from the 1960s

“I changed the filter once during the Rallye,” Nicole told us, “but I really didn’t have to. I pulled it out of the truck and it still looked brand new.”

She also explained that the only problem they had on the journey, was a broken upper shock mount in the rear. Aside from that, the truck performed flawlessly, even climbing the Merzouga Dunes, some of the largest dunes in the world.

Nicole admitted that she changed the filter once on the Rallye, but it was only for peace of mind

The conditions on the Rallye are not for the weak. Every morning starts with a 4:00 am wakeup call. You pack up, eat breakfast, then leave for the day. You travel all day to the next camp, or bivouac, and then eat, work on your vehicle for an hour, and go to sleep. If your vehicle needs more than an hour’s worth of work, there is a full mechanic team ready to fix any issues that might have presented themselves that day, like a broken shock mount. This lasts for nine long, grueling, social media and internet-free days. At the end of the Rallye, there is an awards ceremony and dinner reception in Essaouira, Morocco. From there you make your way to the airport and come home. Like we said, not intended for the weak.

The US team of Nicole and Chrissy came in second place in the 4x4 class, the highest ranking U.S. team to compete in that class. Nicole said that her mind and body have forever been changed by the Rallye.

“I entered the Rallye to redefine my career,” she explained, “and I have to say that spending almost two weeks driving through the desert with zero contact to the outside world does something to you. Not in a bad way, but it makes you look at the world differently.”

We are glad that Nicole decided that K&N was worthy enough to come along for the trip.

This K&N Tapered Conical Universal Air Filter Is Designed to Fit Five Inch Intake Tubes

The K&N RU-5163XD is designed for vehicles with high intake air volume requirements

The K&N RU-5163XD features a five inch base opening for high-volume demands

In various forms of motorsports there are strict limits on displacement. Some sanctioning bodies allow you to run any size engine while others tie displacement to a sliding weight scale. On the street, its anything goes as larger and larger engine blocks are becoming available to builders. This has created a need for a larger intake to provide sufficient air to mix with fuel and generate the desired internal combustion.

To help meet that need, K&N has introduced the RU-5163XD universal clamp-on air filter. It’s jumbo sized to meet the needs of monster motors. The tapered conical filter itself is 4.125 inches to fit into tight spaces, but measures 6.5 inches at the base, with a 5.0 inch inside diameter. That’s right, the RU-5163XD will match right up with a five inch intake pipe. And as the filter flange is constructed from ultra-strong molded pliable rubber, it allows for secure attachment and can also be stretched for up to 1/16" (1.5mm) to fit in-between sizes.

So what’s the advantage of a five inch intake versus a four inch intake? Consider this: an intake pipe that’s four inches in diameter and one foot long has a static capacity of 150.80 cubic inches. A five inch pipe of the same one foot length has a static capacity of 235.6 cubic inches. You want more air flow to your motor? This is how you get it.

The K&N RU-5163XD comes complete with clamp to install on a five-inch intake pipe

The K&N RU-5163XD comes ready to install on your five-inch intake pipe

All K&N universal air filters are manufactured from multiple layers of oiled cotton, a well-regarded filter media due to the irregular surface of the cotton thread and its ability to grab passing dust and dirt. The RU-5163XD not only allows for increased air flow but also provides excellent filtration properties to ensure long engine life. This is verified by K&N’s sophisticated in-house ISO 5011 filtration efficiency testing laboratory, which adheres to International Standard Organization protocols, ensuring that K&N air filters provide high airflow without sacrificing engine protection.

The only maintenance required for a K&N universal filter is a quick and easy service. When needed (which can vary depending on your driving conditions) just grab a K&N air filter cleaning kit to refresh and re-oil your air filter -- bringing it back to brand-new condition and ready for more miles of driving or racing. And the filter comes from K&N with a one year limited warranty.

Dusty Pine’s Custom Sportster Wins the J&P Modified Harley Class in Cleveland, Ohio

Dusty Pine's J&P International Motorcyce Show winning custom Sportster side view

Dusty Pine's beautiful build pays tribute to a lost friend

“While the world is stuck on politics, we're making Sportsters great again!” Dusty Pine isn’t just blowing smoke with his statement. His custom 1993 Harley-Davidson® Sportster rolled away with the Modified Harley Class of the J&P Cycles Ultimate Builder Custom Bike Show in Cleveland, Ohio. K&N sponsors the Mod Harley competition at each stop of the Progressive International Motorcycle Show (IMS) and we couldn’t be more pleased to recognize Pine’s lean and mean Sportie.

The maroon beauty carries the name Pedro in honor of a dear friend that Pine lost. The Pedro custom is more evidence that the small, independent builders are moving to the forefront of the custom bike world. The Modified Harley Class is one of the most competitive segments of the J&P competition, so the win is even sweeter.

Dusty Pine's J&P International Motorcyce Show winning custom Sportster tank

The one-off gas tank has very cool see-through ports

Let’s get right to it. Pine’s build rolls on a custom hardtail frame that gives Pedro ultra clean lines. The tail end is kept uncluttered with a close-hugging fender and simple solo leather seat. The fade paint job on the frame as it moves forward from the rear axle creates a very cool effect.

That fade effect is carried into the upper fork shrouds that are capped with a small, sleek café-style faring that houses a round LED headlight. The clean and simple motif is continues with the fender-less front wheel.

The innovative fuel tank is a signature piece on the Pedro build. The one-off tank has a see-through element that was a big hit with the thousands of fans at the Cleveland IMS. A series of round ports give glimpses through the beautifully painted part. That paint carries a subtle, embedded gear theme deep in the maroon coating. It also carries that big, bold number 70.

Pine carried the theme of the see-through ports into the spaced holes in the top of the tank, the exhaust, and the heads. The unity of the aesthetics is a prime feature of the build.

When it comes down to it, a beautiful build has to have a power-plant that screams. Pedro is certainly not one of those customs that’s all show and no go. The 1200cc engine with a 10.5:1 compression ratio and ported and polished heads delivers a no-nonsense 90 horsepower. It runs Andrews cams and features a Bassani exhaust. The V-twin breathes through a Screamin’ Eagle intake.

The Mod Harley Class winner on the Cleveland IMS red carpet

Dusty Pine is understandably excited about what the win in Cleveland means to his bike-building future. “We had a blast! We took first in Modified Harley and qualified for the national championship in Chicago! I could not be happier,” he said after the Ohio IMS.

K&N congratulates Pine on a fantastic build that is turning heads in the custom bike world.

Jimmy DeFrank Wins Fifth NHRA Super Stock Championship

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; wheelie

K&N-backed driver Jimmy DeFrank won the 2016 NHRA Super Stock championship

Jimmy DeFrank was focused on winning the NHRA Super Stock national championship. He was so focused, he parked one of his cars, focused completely on the K&N-backed Super Stock, and won his fifth NHRA national championship in 2016. It was his first since 2012.

“They’re all different. I can’t say it was more exciting or better or anything. They’re all different,” DeFrank said. “That kind of sticks in my mind more than others. I was very focused on the championship and we changed our game plan a little bit. We usually run two cars, in the Stock category and the Super Stock category. We started this season with a high focus, a 100 percent focus, just on the one category and the one car in Super Stock and it paid off by winning the championship.”

DeFrank started the season by winning the NHRA national event at the Winternationals in Pomona. He won two more events, had two runner-up finishes, and won by a comfortable margin.

“Our theory on focusing on one car worked out well,” DeFrank said. “It’s the one we favor and the one I race the most.”

DeFrank started his NHRA drag racing career in 1995. In 2015, running two cars, he was in contention for championships in the Stock and Super Stock categories. He didn’t win either.

“It just kind of frustrated me and everything,” DeFrank said. “We were close but we just weren’t closing the deal on them. It felt like we weren’t giving 100 percent to each car, because when you’re racing two, it felt like it took us down to 90 or 95 percent effort in each car. We were just rushed and you can’t look at things as close.”

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; race

Jimmy DeFrank won three NHRA Super Stock events in 2016

When the 2016 season started, DeFrank and his team changed their strategy. The put all their attention on the Super Stock car.

“We took a step back for this year and focused on the one car, our primary car and category, and it paid off and proved our gut feeling,” DeFrank said.

After winning the NHRA national event in Pomona to start the season, DeFrank won an NHRA Divisional event in Fontana. But it wasn’t until he won the Super Stock event in Woodburn, Oregon, a Lucas Oil Division 6 race in September, did he feel confident about winning the championship.

“That’s the one that really gave us the end of the year huge boost in points to put us far in the lead,” DeFrank said. “It was great. It was so much different than past ones. We had some championships that have come down to the very last race of the season where we had to win the race. That was my very first one. This one, it just kind of fell into place, probably the earliest out of any championship. The pressure was off earlier than usual.”

Rain and bad weather affected the races in Oregon. Rain washed out the final day. DeFrank and his team had to wait until Monday before winning the event. He said he and his team, his dad Jim and his crew chief, missed a day of work, but it was worth it.

“It was actually a delayed race,” DeFrank said. “It rained on Sunday. We only got maybe one or two rounds in. We were really focused on making good runs, watching the details, all three of us worked very closely. Of course with one car we can really do a lot. We made really good runs and it came together.”

K&N, NHRA, Super Stock; winners circle

K&N-backed driver Jimmy DeFrank won the NHRA Super Stock season opener in Pomona

DeFrank is heading to Pomona this month for the NHRA Auto Club Winternationals to start his campaign for a sixth national championship. He said his team hasn’t decided yet if concentrating on one car is the way to go. The team is going start the season with one car, but that might change as the season unfolds.

“There’s no difference in preparation,” DeFrank said. “Our team is so big on preparation, literally the day after the world finals ended, the last race of the season, we came home and started preparing for this season. We started preparing the car and also the trailer. It’s just the way we are. Even the small things are important to us, even the inventory of the trailer and the maintenance of the trailer. We did start that early, the day after the race.”

Using K&N air and oil filters in his cars are a big part of how his team prepares for each race and the season. DeFrank said the K&N filters are integral to his team’s success.

“K&N is huge for multiple reasons,” De Frank said. “K&N does a ton for our sport. For our particular car, reliability and preparation are so important. But using the K&N products, which are the best products, they are reliable.”
